Established by its owners to bridge the gap between lower and higher end dining, Stella Blues Café is a popular meeting place for many Maui locals and visitors to the island. While many Maui residents remain loyal and make regular visits to the restaurant, some tourists are known to have been frequenting the café for the past seventeen years. From its location in Kihei, the café focuses on home-cooked contemporary American cuisine and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
After a sojourn to Thailand, Ray and Janie Enis opened Stella Blues Café, which is named after the rock band Grateful Dead’s song Stella Blue, of which Ray is a fan. Still family-owned and operated, the menu is mostly prepared by Janie who focuses on a “home-cooking” style that makes people keep on wanting to return. Indeed, Ray and Janie had to relocate from their original restaurant, which was approximately 1,700 square feet, to a premises about seven or eight times larger to accommodate the long lines that had begun accumulating and were taking around 45 minutes for food. The ambience within the restaurant is relatively informal. It is not unusual to see people wearing tie died shirts, even some of the 70 to 100 staff that work here, and the walls are decorated in tribute to the rock band that Ray named the café in honor of.
