Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Big Island

The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is often considered one of the finest resort hotels on the island. Built on a fine white-sand beach, the resort aims for relaxation in secluded surroundings.

The hotel has 258 guest rooms or suites which have recently undergone renovations. In fact, in some area where there were formerly three guest rooms, there now stand two. This redesign of the floor plan has created extra interior space for Barry Design Associates Inc. of Los Angeles to work with. These interior design specialists have provided elegance with refined furnishings and crisp white linens. The amenities are decidedly high-tech with Ipod docking stations, luxury L'Occitane amenities and a few added surprises in each room. The overall finish is one of excellent quality and supreme comfort.

Not that you'll want to spend much time in the rooms with the fabulous natural white sand Kauna'oa Beach (also called Mauna Kea Beach) right on your door-step. This beach is ranked among the best Hawaii has to offer for sheer beauty, and the hotel provides enhanced beach (and pool) services such as chaise lounges, umbrellas, cabanas, thick beach towels and beach equipment.

There are also a total of 11 tennis courts to keep you at the top of your game, not to mention the newly renovated 18-hole championship golf course. This course includes a clubhouse, restaurant and pro-shop for all your golfing needs. For those wishing merely to keep fit, there is a 2,500 square foot fitness center with over 40 exercise machines. Or, to wind down and relax, a brand new Mandara spa for therapies and beauty treatments, even including hair and nails.

Having been built by Laurance S. Rockefeller in 1865, the hotel also houses a selection of artworks gathered by Rockerfeller and Davis Allen specifically for the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 1965. These museum quality Asian and Pacific pieces are on display inside the hotel. Pacific culture is further shared through flower lei-making and hula lessons, crafting classes and a weekly luau with Polynesian musical performances. A newly built boutique shopping center is located next to the koi ponds.

Restaurant choices are plentiful as well. There is the Manta & Pavilion Wine Bar, featuring a dramatic exhibition kitchen and expansive selection of wines and the renowned weekly Saturday seafood buffet at the Clambake. If it is after dinner drinks that you crave, head to The Copper Terrace, featuring music and cozy fire pits for conversation and cocktails.

The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel has ample indoor and outdoor function space with banquet, reception, classroom and theater style layouts all available across more than 100,000 square feet. Wedding parties are also welcome with “Romance Specialist” staff on hand to help you plan your big day on the Big Island.
