Oahu Beach Guide

Oahu Beaches

Oahu has a beach for almost every kind of day. Stay near Waikiki and Ala Moana for calmer water, surf lessons, picnics and sunset walks, head windward for soft white sand and Koolau views, or drive north for surf history and big winter waves. Start with the coast, then choose the beach that fits the day’s surf, wind, parking and pace.

Oahu Beaches Overview

The island of Oahu has a coastline of about 112 miles (180 km). Oahu beaches are diverse and there is something for everyone – there are many great beaches for swimming, snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving, windsurfing, kayaking and relaxing. Most beaches on Oahu are sandy, and some have an offshore coral reef. A few beaches have little or no sand but are nevertheless popular, such as Shark's Cove, an excellent snorkeling and diving spot in the summer months. Beach sand in Hawaii comes in all kinds of shapes and colors. Read more about Hawaiian beach sand composition.

Oahu is home to popular Waikiki Beach, which is busy year-round. Oahu North Shore beaches such as Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach and Banzai Pipeline are some of the most popular surfing beaches in the world, where waves can get as high as 40 feet (12 m) in the winter months. And Hanauma Bay on the southeastern shore is one of the best snorkeling beaches on the island.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Oahu coast should I start with?

Start with Waikiki and the south shore for easy access, beach services and beginner-friendly surf. Choose the windward side for white sand and Koolau Mountain views, or the North Shore for surf culture and bigger winter waves.

Why are North Shore beaches so different in winter?

Winter swell can turn North Shore beaches into powerful surf zones, especially around Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach, Ehukai and Pipeline. In summer, many of those same beaches are much calmer and better for swimming or snorkeling.

Where can visitors find calmer water on Oahu?

Waikiki, Ala Moana Beach Park, Kailua Beach Park, Ko Olina Lagoons and protected coves such as Hanauma Bay are common calm-water choices, but daily surf, wind and current still matter.

Which Oahu beaches are known for surf watching?

Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay, Ehukai Beach Park and Sandy Beach are well-known surf-watching spots. Some are beautiful from shore but dangerous for casual swimming, especially when waves are up.

What should visitors know before choosing an Oahu beach?

Check the coast, season, lifeguard status, parking, reef conditions and posted signs. A beach that is calm in the morning can change by afternoon, and winter North Shore conditions can be very different from south shore conditions.
