Golden Shower Tree

When the golden shower tree blooms, its long yellow flower clusters hang like sunlight from the branches, brightening warm Hawaii landscapes.

Golden Shower Tree Overview

The golden shower tree is a fast-growing ornamental tree best recognized for its long, hanging clusters of bright yellow flowers. When the tree is in bloom, the blossoms can cover the branches so heavily that the whole canopy seems to glow. Its common name fits the look well, especially when the flowers fall and scatter across the ground below.

Native to southern Asia, the golden shower tree grows well in warm tropical and subtropical climates. In Hawaii, it is mainly valued as a landscape tree, adding seasonal color to gardens, parks and roadside plantings. Mature trees can reach about 33 to 66 feet tall, depending on conditions and pruning.

Flowers, Wood and Seeds

The tree's flowers are its main attraction. They appear in loose, drooping clusters and bring a soft golden color that stands apart from red-flowering trees such as the royal poinciana tree or purple-blooming trees such as the jacaranda tree. Its leaves create a lighter canopy than large shade trees such as the banyan tree.

The golden shower tree also has strong, durable wood. However, the seeds are poisonous, so the tree should be treated with care around children, pets and areas where seed pods may fall. Like many ornamental trees, it works best where people can enjoy its flowers while still managing its natural mess and growth.

Golden Shower Trees in Hawaii

Golden shower trees are not native Hawaiian trees, and they do not carry the same cultural role as koa, hala or canoe plants such as coconut. Their appeal comes mostly from color, shade and seasonal bloom.

In Hawaii's mix of native, canoe, fruit and ornamental trees, the golden shower tree adds a cheerful flowering presence. Its bright blooms make it easy to notice when in season, especially in sunny landscapes where the yellow flowers stand out against green leaves and blue sky.
