Makolea is a quaint, small complex with an old Hawaii feel. Just across the street from the famous Kahaluu Beach Park for the best snorkeling, surfing, and swimming on the island! This two bedroom, two bath condo offers enough space for families to stay comfortably. The full kitchen has all the amenities needed. Condo is equipped with beach chairs and snorkel gear. Enjoy!

Makolea is a 2 minute drive to the Keauhou Shopping Center. You have your choice of Japanese, Italian, Thai, Mexican or Hawaiian Restaurants. Shopping, Grocery Stores, and a movie theater as well! Catch the Kona Trolley all around Kailua-Kona for a $2 transfer fee. A fun way to see the town!
The ceiling fans and breezes keep the condo cool and comfortable during your visit. There are flat screen TVs in both bedrooms and a smart TV in the living room. Both bedrooms have air conditioning (please be sure to turn it off when leaving the condo - electricity in Kona is very expensive). Free WiFi is also available in the condo.

I was a VERY disappointed with this rental and would not return to this unit or use Kona Rentals again.
The Pros:
This is a good location. Walking distance to the beach and a close drive to amenities. The bedroom and bathroom set up is nice.
The Cons:
Throughout my visit there was poor communication from the property company. I sent a couple of emails a week before my visit and also called, but no one ever responded. When we arrived at 7pm the place had not been cleaned. I tried to get ahold of the company and their emergency number but it took quite some time to reach anyone. After many calls and texts and reaching out to vrbo the place was cleaned (very poorly) and we were able to get in after 10pm. The property company did give me a small refund for this issue but I had to call several times after my trip as they “forgot” about it.
The next morning, as I was looking around, I started to notice a bunch of things misleading about the property description. There wasn’t a BBQ / grill, there weren’t any beach chairs and neither of the bedrooms had tv. These were all reasons we booked this place. Additionally, the binder in the unit says there is a pool key and if missing they would charge you a $100. There wasn’t a pool key. I contacted the property company about these issues. I also told them that the main light in the living room ceiling fan wasn’t working making the living room very dark. After a couple of days, one tv was dropped off, some light bulbs and some beach chairs. Unfortunately, I didn’t bring a ladder on my vacation, so I wasn’t able to fix the light. Since we had no idea they were bringing us chairs (as they never got back on this) we had already gone out and purchased some.
The general condition of this place is very poor and dated. The carpets are gross with dirt and stains, the rugs in the bathroom were old and stained, there were blood stains on a couple of the towels, one of the bathroom drawers was broken and the picture on the vrbo site must be many years old as bottom of refrigerator is very rusted. The unit was pretty buggy. Ants came up through bathtub drains. Kitchen supplies are limited to the very basics.
As noted in another review, there isn’t a designated onsite parking spot. A covered car is in it. Parking at night wasn’t a problem but during the day we ended up illegally parking several times because there isn’t any street parking as it gets used by people going to the beach a block away.

Loved the location! Short walk to beach where we enjoyed surfing and snorkeling. Also short walk to the trolley and the bike rentals which we also used. Great location if you rent a car to get to different types of beaches not far away and to restaurants and stores. It does not have a reserved parking spot but other than one day out of our 10 day stay it was never a problem to get a parking space.

Overall the unit was as advertised and adequate, the location was great. There were a number of issues that could have certainly improved our stay however.
The parking space assigned was taken, we assumed the car was the unit owners, this left us with street parking.
There was a stuffed load of towels in the dryer when we arrived. It would have been nice to show up for our vacation not having to fold laundry from the previous tenants.
The only toilet paper was one partial roll in each bathroom. This caused an early morning trip to the drug store. In all my years traveling this was a first to not have additional TP available.
There were no additional trash bags in the unit. Again, this was a first for me staying in a STVR and rather annoying.
Overall, the vacation was wonderful and the location was awesome. Should I plan another Kona vacation I would certainly consider the location however I will be looking for a unit handled by a different property management.

Super great spot walking distance to the beach! The location couldn’t be better. Amenities are just as described, clean functional and Craig is super easy and great every time I chatted with him or had a question! Can’t recommend this spot enough!

There was no lock box as advised… just a code to the front door. No one told us the dryer wasn’t working until I called Craig. Carpets need to be cleaned especially with Covid. Had to buy scrubbie to wash dishes,
only one dish cloth… Found the dustpan by accident.

This condo was wonderful for our family! We had a wonderful 2 week stay splitting the 2nd bedroom for 1 week each with 2 our adult children. The condo was in a great location and very comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked and all of the neighbors were very courteous. Mahalo! for the use of your condo. We will definitely look into booking it again the next time we stay in Kona.

This condo is in bad need of refurbishing. The appliances all need replacing, along with the bedroom carpeting. The location is excellent and the condo building is fine, but I was disappointed in the state of the condo.
