Chun's Reef, Oahu

Chun's Reef is a popular surf site on Oahu's North Shore. There is a long stretch of sandy beach that begins here and ends at Kawailoa Beach to the east. The beach is located right next to Kamehameha Highway.

The surf site is named after John Chun, a former resident in this area, who owned a house in nearby Kawailoa. His children liked to surf, but preferred this surf site over the site in front of their house, called Leftovers. A family friend eventually named the surf site where the Chun kids liked to surf Chun's Reef and since that time (the 1960s) it is known as Chun's.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where did Chun's Reef get its name?

The surf break is commonly linked to John Chun, whose family lived nearby. His children preferred this break over the surf in front of their home near Leftovers, and the name stayed with the beach.

What makes Chun's Reef different from Waimea Bay?

Waimea Bay is a large, famous beach with a dramatic bay setting. Chun's Reef is smaller and more low-key, with roadside access, a reef break and a calmer beach scene when the surf is not large.

Why do surf schools like Chun's Reef?

On smaller days, the waves can be more approachable than many other North Shore breaks. The reef still matters, so lessons and local guidance are helpful for anyone who does not know the spot.

Is Chun's Reef a good sunset photo spot?

Yes. The open North Shore view, white sand and surfers offshore make it a good place for late-day photos, especially when the sky lights up over the water.

What should you know about the reef here?

The reef is part of the surf break and can be shallow in places. Walk carefully near exposed rock and avoid stepping on coral or entering when the water looks too rough.
