On Oahu's windward shore, Mokoli'i rises from the ocean near Kualoa. Many people know it by its nickname, Chinaman's Hat, because of its familiar shape against Kaneohe Bay.
But some who drive the road from the North Shore toward Kualoa notice something strange. For a moment, the island seems to grow larger. Then, as the road bends and the view changes, it seems to shrink again.

Mokoli'i is connected with Hawaiian legend. One well-known story tells of Hi'iaka, the younger sister of Pele, and a great mo'o, or lizard. After Hi'iaka defeated the creature, part of it became the small island seen offshore today.
