Hamoa Beach at a Glance

Hamoa Beach, located south of the quaint little town of Hana, has already made an impression on popular author James Michener (who wrote the book “Hawaii”). Michener called Hamoa Beach the most beautiful in the Pacific. And quite true. Hamoa Beach is gorgeous and a photographer’s dream.

Thirty-foot-high sea cliffs surround the 1,000-foot-long (305 m) and 100-foot (30 m) wide white sand beach, and the lush vegetation of the beach contrasts sharply with the clear, turquoise waters of the Pacific. Offshore is the little island of Alau.

Hamoa Beach is one of several pocket beaches in this area. It offers excellent swimming, bodysurfing and snorkeling conditions. Because it is not protected by any outer reef, the surf can get pretty high and currents can be strong.

The water is at its calmest during the summer and early fall. This is when swimming and snorkeling are excellent here. In the winter months (November to March), the conditions for bodyboarding and surfing can’t be beaten here.

No lifeguards are stationed here, but you’ll find restrooms and picnic facilities. The Hotel Hana Maui is located nearby and mainly guests of this hotel frequent this beach. There are restrooms and picnic facilities, but no lifeguards.

Safety Tip
Whatever beach in Hawaii you visit, please have in mind that the ocean can be very dangerous. Never turn your back against the waves and watch out for underwater currents and always check the surf conditions. Pay attention to signs posted on the beach. If you are not sure about the conditions, ask the lifeguards (if any on the beach). Please click here to read more about ocean safety in Hawaii.
