Kaanapali at a Glance

Kaanapali is a coastal town on the western shores of Maui located approximately 5 miles (8 km) north of Lahaina. The town boasts beautiful beaches, volcanic rock formations, snorkeling spots and several ritzy hotels, such as the Hyatt Regency, Westin and Sheraton. It has one of the most popular tourism developments on Maui.

Other Kaanapali attractions include the Sugar Cane Train, which goes from Kaanapali to Lahaina. The Whalers Village Museum at the Whalers Village Shopping Center features whale-hunting artifacts, scrimshaws and models of whaling ships and whales. Art galleries, some of which are considered the best on Maui, also abound in Kaanapali.

According to a 2000 census survey, 1,375 people, 537 households and 380 families inhabit the 5.7-square mile town. Kaanapali’s population density was estimated at 282.8 people per square mile, while its population growth rate is a high 29.16%.

Kaanapali is made up largely of Caucasians, who comprise approximately 80.07% of the population. Latinos are 10.55% of the population, Asians 7.42%, and Native Hawaiians 2.04%. There are African Americans also, but they’re only approximately 0.95% of the population while Native Americans are 0.15%. People from two or more races comprise the 10.55%.

The oceanfront town earned an annual per capita income of $48, 393. Males earned more than females, averaging an $48,393 income while females had an income average of $41,625. Only 2.7% of the population was below the poverty line.
