Kaaawa is a small town on Oahu’s windward (eastern) coast,
in the district of Koolauloa, with a population of 1,324
in the 2000 census. Foreigners often times stumble over
the town’s name and think it may be misspelt because it
has three vowels in a row. In the
Hawaiian language, it is written Ka‘a‘awa. Each one
of the a’s is pronounced separately and distinctly. That’s
why it is set apart by the two okina in the middle, the
little hooks that look like apostrophes. They are actually
a letter in the Hawaiian language, meaning that the vowels
have to be emphasized while pronouncing the word.
Kaaawa is north of
Kaneohe Bay, located right on the ocean. Its beach is
fronted by a broad fringing reef with a narrow beach that’s
perfect for long strolls. Kamehameha Highway (Route 83),
the highway that goes around the island, passes right through
the town. A long valley, the Kaaawa Valley, extends inland
and is part of
Kualoa Ranch. Here, various tourist activities, such
as horseback rides, ATV rides and movie tours are being
offered. Many popular Hollywood movies have been filmed
in this valley, including Jurassic Park, Godzilla and 50
First Dates.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Kaaawa has a total
area of 1.1 square miles (2.8 km²). The population density
was 2,250.6 people per square mile (866.4/km²). The racial
makeup was the following: 35.88% White, 0.45% Black or African
American, 0.38% Native American, 8.76% Asian, 22.66% Pacific
Islander, 1.13% from other races, and 30.74% from two or
more races. 8.23% of the population was Hispanic or Latino
of any race.
The median income for a household in Kaaawa in 2000 was
$54,500, and the median income for a family was $60,156.
Males had a median income of $42,500 versus $28,906 for
females. The per capita income was $21,881. 11.8% of the
population lived below the poverty line.
