Aiea is located on Oahu’s south shore, about eight miles
west of
Honolulu downtown. It is home to the largest indoor
shopping center in Hawaii – Pearlridge (it’s the second
largest shopping after
Ala Moana Center in Honolulu). Pearlridge features the
island’s only monorail system that transports shoppers between
Uptown and Downtown Pearlridge. Customers enjoy a scenic
ride with views of
Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial.
Pearlridge has more than 170 stores, restaurants and services.
It also has two food courts, a miniature golf course, 16
theaters, an emergency clinic (Kapiolani Medical Center
at Pali Momi) and an eight-story office complex. Between
the two shopping areas Uptown and Downtown lies Sumida Farm,
the largest supplier of watercress in Hawaii. Aiea also
features the
Aloha Stadium, where the National Football League's
Pro Bowl takes place every year.
As of the 2000 census, it had a total population of 9,019,
2,758 households and 2,258 families. The population density
was 5,463.5 people per square mile (2,110.5/km²). The town
has the highest concentration of persons of Japanese heritage,
41.41 %, in the United States. The complete racial makeup
was as following: 16.25% White, 0.85% Black or African American,
0.14% Native American, 58.31% Asian, 5.08% Pacific Islander,
0.77% from other races and 18.59% from two or more races.
5.47% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Aiea encompasses 1.8 square miles (4.5 km²). The residential
area named Aiea Heights extends up the ridgeline above the
city. Aiea’s medium household income was $71,155 and for
a family it was $75,992. Males had a median income of $41,384
versus $32,394 for females. The per capita income was $25,111.
A total of 4.6 % of the population lived below the poverty
line.
Attractions in Aiea are Pearlridge, which is Hawaii’s largest
enclosed shopping center and second largest in the state.
The shopping mall has two sections, Uptown and Downtown.
It also has the only monorail in the state, the only hospital
located on mall property (Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali
Momi) and Hawaii's largest watercress farm (Sumida Farm).
Aiea also features the Aloha Stadium, where the National
Football League's Pro Bowl takes place every year.
