Do not stay here if you don’t want cockroaches in your room. We booked all three bedrooms. This place is not clean or well-maintained and unbelievably we killed TWO cockroaches in our bedroom in one day (and the room smelled mildewy the entire trip). We asked management for a refund because that is completely unacceptable and they HAVE NOT RESPONDED to our request. The maintenance in this unit was very disappointing. There were outlets with broken cover plates, exposing the wiring. We have an 18 month old child with us and this was an extremely dangerous situation to have to continuously monitor. This type of poor maintenance was present all over the unit with carpet coming apart, strange holes in the wall, and extremely dirty and cracked floor tiles throughout. Our bed frame was broken and the sheets were paper thin. It’s clear this owner is trying to operate on a shoestring budget to maximize profits at the expense of the guests. It was also disappointing that most restaurants at the resort were closed or operating limited hours. That was not made clear to us when booking. Also we did not receive any housekeeping even though this unit was at a resort. That also was not made clear in the booking. We paid an exorbitant amount to stay here and could not be more disappointed. Don’t waste your money.

The view was great, but the communication with the property management was horrible. The air conditioner in the furthest west bedroom of the rental was the only one that was off when we checked in, so I know they were aware it was not working. It spit out water when I turned it on, but I thought nothing of it at the time. When I returned to that room about an hour later, there was a sizable puddle of water on the floor under the unit and water raining from it. I notified property management through VRBO and heard nothing so contacted them via phone and left a message. Heard no response (we left and went to dinner) and the unit was off when we returned. I turned it back on and had to put a large storage tote under it to collect the water running out (it was very hot in the bedroom and no air conditioning was not an option) and tried to contact property management again and also called the front desk. The dripping noise all night was impossible to sleep with and made staying there miserable. Contacted property management again and insisted something be done and was told to place something under it to catch the water and they would have someone out the next day to try to fix it. It was never fixed during our stay and the constant dripping noise left us unrested and miserable. Also, the wind blew one of the doors between the units closed and there was no way to get into that unit without being let back in by maintenance. This could pose a safety hazard if you have young children. The resort is old and could use updating. No food or drink available on property the day we arrived. Saving grace was the view. If we come back, will try to stay somewhere with a similar view, but not here.

Location was absolutely ideal for our needs - principally surfing in Hanalei Bay, beachgoing, snorkeling and hiking. The resort amenities were great, including the pool, tennis courts, restaurant on-site and available barbeque grills. We utilized the resort concierge ahead of arrival to arrange a park hike, botanical garden tour, a luau and a kayak/hiking excursion. The view from our 3rd floor accommodation was spectacular! Parking was easy. Sometimes it was difficult to tell who to contact for various needs, as management seems shared between the VRBO property manager and the on-site Hanalei Bay Resort staff, but we had very few needs and nothing really impacted our enjoyment of the property. The kitchen was terrific and well stocked with plates, glasses, silverware and all we needed for meal prep and cooking. Nearby Foodland was very convenient and well stocked. The washer and dryer located right in our suite was a HUGE plus and were quite new and efficient, likewise the dishwasher and fridge! The furniture in the units could use some updating. We appreciated the use of LED lighting in the units for environmental reasons, but the illumination was poor and made reading at night difficult. Overall, our stay was fantastic, and we would return there in the future if the opportunity arises!

We had a wonderful time playing at the beach, enjoying family and celebrating a tropical Christmas. The condo was clean and stocked with plenty of supplies for our stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property. The condo unit is large enough to comfortably accommodate 9 people. The swimming pool was a hit with the kids and the beach (albeit a short, steep walk) had some of the best snorkeling on the island (wear water shoes!). The views of Hanalei Bay and the hour long morning rainbows were nothing short of magic. The name Hanalei Bay Resort is a little deceiving though as we thought we would be much closer to the actual town of Hanalei. Please note that the entrance to this resort is indeed in Princeville and the beach access is in the easternmost part of Hanalei Bay. All in all, I would definitely recommend this place to others - beautiful grounds, great amenities and spectacular views depending on which condo you stay in!

Condo was great with upgrades to bathrooms and kitchen. Breathtaking views and generous lanai. I don’t think there is a bad view in the entire complex. Staff were friendly and so helpful. The dresser in our room was musty and unusable because the smell transferred onto clothes but this was minor. Several of the keys we were given to access the unit did not work so we had to return to reception a couple of times. The bedrooms can be separate units or connected to the main unit, but that means the doors connecting the units are one-sided (and doorknob on one side only) making it easy to lock yourself on one side.. Additionally, the external door knobs can only be opened with a key. My 2yo shut himself himself in a bedroom and none of the keys to the external bedroom door worked - fortunately I was able to open the external door by reaching my arm through the flimsy screen on the window next to the door and turning the knob. The resort cut us new keys after this incident. The doors bolt on the inside so it felt safe and secure while we were inside, but easy to break into if the bolt was not engaged (we didn’t have many valuables so this did not bother us, but it may be important to others). Unfortunately for us the pool was unusable because it was so cold and the bottom was rough. We’ve stayed on the north shore at other resorts during the cold/rainy season and those pools were still warm enough to swim in. The hot tub was a warm haven, but a lot of the original stone was patched with concrete that was rough and scratched up our feet if we weren’t careful. The sandy area for kids was unusable because it was so small and didn’t have enough sand to cover the rocky concrete ledge. Be sure to bring water shoes if you plan to use hot tub or pool. They have any equipment you may need to rent, however the rental shop was unpredictably closed at times. In summary, Hanalei Bay Resort is a great place for anyone focused on the many great things Kaua’i has to offer - tennis, golf, hiking, kayaking, beaches, surfing, paddle boarding, mountain-gazing, etc. I do not recommend it for anyone who wants pool time. We were traveling with small children so this aspect, in addition to the safety concerns of locking doors, was not a good fit for our family.
