Property Description
House Description
Come stay in at our park-like property on a breezy hilltop with a wide view of the ocean less than a mile distant. The pool and adjoining covered cabana is secluded and private in the backyard. The neighborhood is a pleasant but ordinary residential area on the east side of the island.
A typical older home in this former sugar plantation area, the house reflects our local Japanese legacy with shoji screens throughout the house. They allow for air flow when wanted or privacy when desired. From the carport, the ground level entry leads into a carpeted and comfortable living room. There's plenty of room here for lounging, reading or enjoying entertainment on the smart tv. Central to the home is the fully equipped kitchen. Among our guests, some professional chefs have commented how well set up the kitchen is. You can easily step from kitchen to dining room (seats 6), or to the screened lanai where another table and chairs allows for lanai dining. The lanai also has a comfortable sofa and chairs. Two bedrooms are on main floor each with an ensuite bathroom. Off from the kitchen is a small Tv room, a game room, or for reading or just snoozing. On the lower level is a bedroom with two twin beds and a petite full bathroom, and a TV.
A roomy laundry is also on the lower level.
Right out the sliding glass door from the living room is the fully fenced swimming pool and cabana shelter with table, chairs and a charcoal grill. The back yard is very private as is the rest of the property. The house sits on a small hilltop with lovely views of the ocean about a mile distant. The driveway is gated and the property is fully fenced.
ALL Guests MUST BE INCLUDED when making your reservation. (accurate number of guests)
THE HOUSE IS SOLELY FOR REGISTERED GUESTS.
NO outside visitors are allowed other than the REGISTERED GUESTS listed in your booking. If you have friends in the islands reach out to us to discuss ANY invitations of outsider guests to the house. This restriction is for liability issues, compliance with our permit to operate as a short term rental, and good neighborly relations.
AC is uncommon in this part of Hawaii because the temperatures vary from about 64 to 86 degrees year round. It's lovely, naturally! Therefore, there is no AC in this house.
Pepeekeo is north of downtown Hilo by about 7 miles. The house sits on a 3 acre parcel next to the more heavily settled area of the village. There are two convenience stores nearby and a post office. Shopping is generally done in Hilo. Nearby there is another convenience store that also serves coffee, beverages and a variety of freshly made sandwiches and wraps.
Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is also near by, about a mile from the house across the highway, and runs about 5 miles long.
This botanical garden can be explored as a drive or a hike and has a lovely large park overlooking the ocean.
Akaka Falls (440 feet high) state park is in nearby Honomu, about 8 miles from the house. Volcano National Park is just under an hour to the south and the stunningly beautiful Waipio Valley is just under an hour to the north. Our "Pepeekeo House" is a good place for friends and family to base while touring the east side of our lovely Hawaii Island (The Big Island). Our place is comfortable and clean but modest in style. The Hamakau coast is our treasured gem, gorgeous and tropical!

Best host I have ever encountered in my many short term rentals. House is quite well-furnished and comfortable and impecably clean. Built on a hillside with a view of the ocean and designed so that the evening sea breezes flow through the rooms. The bedrooms are cool and sleeping was easy. Super kitchen with a nicely stocked pantry and condiments in the fridge. Very private and you can skinny dip in the beautiful pool. Only 15 minutes from Hilo and its not-to-be-missed Saturday farmers market (1 ripe papayas!). The highlight for me was sitting out on the large screen-in lanai during tropical downpours in the evening!

This was a very enjoyable stay for me and my family. My kids enjoyed the pool and we were able to relax and unwind at the end of the day. Our host was extremely kind and was quick to respond to questions and we felt we were treated like family.

It was a relaxing atmosphere. Property was very private which made the stay even more enjoyable. Having private bathrooms in each room was awesome and the home was provided with towels, cleaning products availability to water/dryer and many cooking condiments

We had a wonderful reunion of old friendships from two continents. The property was lush and the pool refreshing. Basement bedroom needs attention. Basement bathroom moldy. Screen door to garden and others needs replacement.

We were coming to Hawaii for my son's graduation from UH at Hilo and very much looking forward to our stay in this house. Unfortunately, we were met with the smell and sight of mold in every room. There was visible black mold on the ceilings, walls and other surfaces. All of the bedrooms smelled bad. The sofas and carpet were wet or damp. There were leaks in the bathroom that penetrated the ceiling below. In addition, the electrical outlets were damaged and outdated and the pool was unusable due to a vacuum which guests were not permitted to remove. When I called the owner she became defensive and began screaming at me over the phone. Her response was, "leave if you don't like it. No one else has complained." Because we arrived so late in the day, we had no other option but to stay the night. Two of us were up coughing all night. Early the next morning we cancelled our reservation, as per the owner's instructions and went to a hotel. The representative from VRBO that I spoke to just referred me back to the owner. I am still waiting and hoping we get our money back, but have yet to receive any guidance or assistance to that end. This has been a very expensive mistake, but I do feel we dodged a bullet by not spending more time in that toxic environment.

We had a lovely time exploring the Big Island. Our stay was relaxing and our host, Windy, and her home were top notch.

My wife already wants to come back. We loved our stay at the house. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to create a great meal, which we chose to do. There are beaches with fantastic snorkeling in close driving distance. We saw hundreds of tropical fish of many varieties and a few sea turtles. This was my family’s favorite experience on the island. The kids loved the private pool and my wife and I loved lounging outside under the awning during light rains. At night we fell asleep to the songs of the chirping frogs. There is so much life all around you in Hilo and your right in the middle of it with this wonderful house.

The house was clean, spacious, and provided many amenities. We enjoyed the beautiful landscape and felt secluded even though there were other houses around. The lenai was a favorite place to have morning coffee and listen to the wildlife. Lovely stay for a family!

Wonderful place to stay on the East side of the Island. Super cute. Well stocked/supplied. Clean. Fresh cut beautiful flowers on the table. We never ended up using the pool. We were way to busy doing all the things but it looked clean. The grill was great. Not a long drive to town to wander around in the market or to watch locals surf. Like to cow cuddle? That is just down the street as well. Quiet neighborhood. We like to sleep with the windows open. The night time sounds of what I am assuming are the Coqui (a small loud frog lol) did get a bit loud. Didn't bother my husband at all. I used earplugs and didn't have a problem. Just an fyi, the coffee maker is a regular coffee pot (love the timer setting). Although there was plently of ground coffee for us to use, that may not be the case always so make a note to self to buy ground and not k-cups. Hope you enjoy the peace that this place provides as much as we did.

We enjoyed all parts of Windy's gorgeous house. Despite some rainy weather, Windy made sure to have the pool cleaned and we enjoyed a few afternoon swims. The lanai is peaceful and looks down the hillside to the sea. We loved the breezes that naturally cooled the house, and all the privacy on the grounds, as well as freat seperation of space. Windy was also very accomodating of our requests and was able to accommodate our request very quickly. Mahalo, we hope to return again!
