Kauai's Kipu Falls claims another victim
Kipu Falls on Kauai is a well-known waterfall that became popular after it was promoted in several Hawaii travel guide books and websites. It is located in an area where otherwise a Kauai visitor would never go to since one has to trespass through private property. The waterfall is rather small, but there is a nice pool with a rope swing that people use to jump from the cliff into the pool.

Today, a 35-year old tourist drowned here. He jumped into the pool and as he swam back toward shore he went underwater and didn't come back up. His body was retrieved from the bottom of the pool about an hour later by rescue workers. He is not the first person who has drowned at this waterfall.

In December 2009 a 48-year-old visitor was swimming in the pool when he went underwater and didn't come back up. A year later, in December 2010, the exact same thing happened to a 26-year-old visitor. He also jumped into the pool, tried to swim back to land, went underwater and never resurfaced.

Officials are not sure what causes these mysterious drownings at Kipu Falls. But all drowning cases at the waterfall seem to have a similar pattern and make no sense as the pool is small compared to the ocean and one wouldn't think that people could get out of breath while swimming here and drown considering that the land is so close to them. So what makes people drown here?

And apparently it is not just drownings that happen here. According to local officials about 20 people a year suffer injuries at Kipu Falls, usually cuts and bruises, while jumping off the cliff.

The Kauai Visitor Bureau has said that Kipu Falls should not be promoted anymore as a fun and exotic place to visit. First of all, it is surrounded by private land and second, it is simply too dangerous.

They have probably made a good choice. Mysterious can probably be explained by the undertow created by the heavy water falling.
