Property Description
VOLCANO VILLAGE SERENITY SUITE
We do not accept bookings from anyone who has not been vaccinated and had booster shots, with the exception of small children. We appreciate your honesty about this as it is very important to us. Thank you for being vaccinated in this critical time. Mahalo!
And, DO KNOW this is truly a "Big Island". If you are flying directly into the Kona airport it is 90+ miles from Volcano so try to arrive early into Kona. Let us know so we can advise you on the best route to take. The Hilo Airport is 30 easy miles from Volcano.
Your private entrance leads to our sweet and cozy Serenity Suite in the heart of quiet Volcano Village. FREE breakfast the first morning. Guests say this is the coziest place they have ever stayed, it truly is!!
Our property is on one half acre of land that we have been gardening and landscaping in a native forest for 40 years. You will find quiet and privacy here.
Guests are awed by this piece of paradise and are treated like family.
Relax in either of 2 hammocks, one under the native Lehua Ohia trees and Hapu'u ferns and the other on your private covered porch.
We have added a gas grill and grilling tools to Serenity Suite for our guests use.
This is vacation rental is NOT located in a subdivision, as many vacation rentals in Volcano are. We are in the heart of the "Village" on a charming and quiet road, just minutes from the park and Volcano Village dinning.
Relax and restore as you listen to soothing native bird songs (note: there are no noisy coqui frogs in this part of the village, which are very loud critters)
There is a cozy gas fireplace, Sally's extensive lending library and 2 beds in this 2 room suite with covered porch. over 700 sf. Second bed is a double and suitable for a third guest or for 2 children. Not suitable for comfort for 2 adults.
We think this vacation rental is ideal for 2 adults or a family. It is not always ideal for 4 adults as there is one queen bed and one double bed, so if you are especially tall or large the double bed might be too small for you. We want everyone to be most comfortable while staying in Volcano Village Serenity Suite!
Extra single futon available, if needed.
We have comfy "hapi" coats for you to wear and soft fuzzy socks if needed. You will be "happy" here!
A generous locally sourced breakfast is provided on the first morning in your suite. (Note vegetarian but not vegan) It will all be in the fridge when you arrive. Our water is excellent, so don't buy any bottled water.
Wonderful freshly ground coffee, tea assortments, local juice, hot chocolate and popcorn are provided.
We are extremely close to ALL that you need: 3 minutes to the nearby stores and restaurants and 5 minutes to the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Our sweet neighborhood is also a joy to stroll in, so bring your walking shoes.
You will love this place!
We also are LEGAL and registered with the State of Hawaii, as a legitimate vacation rental. Sadly, many are not.
Come, meet, Sally & Jeffrey Mermel.
Sally is celebrating her 54th year in Hawaii and Jeffrey is a former Volcano National Park naturalist. We love Volcano and have lived in this home for 45 years. Sally's garden was recently featured on a garden tour by The Volcano Foundation.
The youngest island in the archipelago, 'Hawaii's Big Island' was believed to be the first island Polynesian voyagers set foot on 1,500 years ago. Today, the 'Big Island' remains a vital touchstone for Hawaiian culture, the birthplace of Hawaii's greatest King, Kamehameha I, also the home of Pele, goddess of fire, and Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. Mark Twain called this island 'the peacefullest, restfullest, balmiest, dreamiest haven of refuge for a worn and weary spirit the surface of the earth can offer'.

Words cannot express our gratitude for our stay here. We were greeted by Jeffrey who was an absolute wealth of knowledge, and so kind. Their home is truly magical! Set in the ferns you feel like you are in another world. The home is so cozy and relaxing, full of books and character, we didn't want to leave. Jeffrey and Sally have created a true gem, honestly one of our favorite vacation rental experiences ever! We travelled all around and did some island hopping, but we could not stop talking about our beautiful time in Volcano. Thank you for your amazing hospitality, it was far beyond our expectations!!!

We had a truly magical stay! Jeffrey was incredibly kind and welcoming. As a park ranger, he gave us great insights and tips about Volcanoes National Park, and even swore in our daughter as a Junior Ranger – such a special moment for her!The house itself feels like a hidden gem in the rainforest. Surrounded by lush ferns and vibrant plants, with a hammock and a little fairy garden, it was simply enchanting.Sally’s inspiring book collection added a thoughtful and personal touch – we could have spent hours exploring her beautiful library.Thank you for sharing this peaceful and magical place with us – we will always remember it with a smile!

A cozy suite in the midst of a tropical rainforest! We delighted in sitting among the forest, as well as on the patio--trying to identify the various bird sounds. The provisions for the first breakfast were wonderful--definitely enough for 2 breakfasts. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. Jeffrey is a volunteer ranger at the volcano national park and he kept us informed of an impending eruption.

We had a great stay and hosts Sally and Jeffrey were welcoming & filled with area knowledge. The two-room unit was clean with easy access to Volcanoes National Park. Best for a real non-working vacation: no desk, no dining room table inside, and internet was offline for 2 days (the hosts had let us know that internet is normally great) though once working again, the internet was too slow & intermittent for video conferencing, plus cell reception was poor. Taking multiple meals each day at nearby Kilauea Lodge provided limitless coffee and fast internet which worked out well for combining work and vacay. There are two separate rooms, one with counter space, a small sink, and several cooking items including a microwave, electric frying pan — a good space for two travelers with two areas.

We loved staying in this cottage in a rain forest filled with tree ferns and flowers. It was peaceful, comfortable and beautiful . There was a yummy welcome breakfast for our first day. Our hosts were exceptional. Sally provided everything we needed for a relaxing stay. Jeffrey was wealth of information about Volcanoes National Park. He shared his considerable knowledge from years of being a park ranger. This was an added bonus. Our stay exceeded expectations.

Thankful to Sally and Jeffery for opening their home. We had a great time during our stay and had a once in a lifetime experience getting to see the volcano’s 20th eruption episode! Their suggestions for hikes and viewpoints were invaluable for getting to see Kīlauea in all its wonder. They were very accommodating. Almost everything you need to enjoy your time in the national park they have available.

This was our 2nd visit staying at the cottage. We love the peace and quiet of the location. Being right in the village makes it possible to walk to any of the restaurants and it's very close to the national park. Having a fridge, barbeque and microwave made it possible for us to prepare a dinner and breakfasts. There are a ton of great books to read and I was able to look up plants and birds we saw on our walk/hikes. Jeffery gave us great orientation to the park as he is a volunteer park ranger. Our first b'fast was provided which was very helpful and delicious. I highly recommend this cottage.

The property is beautiful surrounded by lush green trees. It was exactly what we had expected and even better. The host was warm and welcoming. The house was clean and well arranged. It was just 7 to 8 mins away from the volcano NP.Jeffry even informed us when the volcano was erupting and we could spectacled the unbelievable view of it because of him.We can highly recommend this place for couples or small families.

We very much enjoyed our stay at this private, quiet cottage in a beautiful Hawaiian rainforest. It’s very close to Hawaii Volcano National Park. The flora and fauna (birds) in the area are truly phenomenal. The cottage was well appointed with useful items such as a full fridge and hammocks, coolers, and guides to the area. We put the walking sticks to good use out on the trails in the quiet early morning in the park. We enjoyed witnessing a volcanic eruption for the very first time! Amazing! A general store is just down the road (closes early but has lots of cold drinks) and three days a week Rico’s taco stand is selling delicious Mexican food. You’ll love it!
