The property was beautiful and peaceful. We loved our time here! It was pretty stuffy when we arrived, but did improve quite a bit after opening windows and doors. Some ceiling fans would have made things quite a bit more comfortable. Most of the house was clean, but it seemed that the guest bedrooms hadn't been deep cleaned in a while. Lots of cobwebs under the furniture. The description of the property said 10 acres, but only about 1 acre was available, due to sink holes. Despite this, it was well stocked, very pretty, and we did enjoy our stay very much! It is a good value for the price. Waking up in the morning and watching the rain showers out of the box window in the main bedroom was a favorite part of the stay. As well as sitting on the back porch and watching the birds. It's proximity to volcanoes national Park was very good, as well.
A lovely home in a secluded setting, where you can experience the serene beauty of a rainforest, yet drive to Volcano National Park in just 15 minutes or the Hilo area in just 30. The home is large, well-furnished, and in good condition. Excellent, fully-equipped kitchen, with modern appliances. Large TV, and two desks with large computer monitors, keyboards, desks, and fast Wi-Fi. Excellent washer & dryer, and much more.
This home is lovely, secluded, and very quiet. It is also super close to Volcanoes National Park. However, if you, like me, hope to get online and do some work, this is not the place. We logged into the wireless network shortly after arriving, but we never had any internet connectivity. I emailed the property owner to ask about internet, and she…just…never responded…during the three days we spent there. No response at all.
Everything was as described and in good working order
Many fun animal visitors! Frogs, sheep, chickens. super close to Volcano. Very secluded property.
Beautiful house in a quiet rural area. Very near Volcano Park.
We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful home. The grounds are well kept and the area is very peaceful. We used the grill a lot and were appreciative of all the basics the owners provided. We used this place to drive to various sights, we took a tour that departed from Hilo and drove up the Mauna Kea. Black Sand beaches with the lovely green sea turtles are nearby as is the Volcanic Park. Hilo and its Tsunami museum and the Imiloa Astronomy Center are both a must see. Too much to do. A supermarket is also closeby. Overall we had a wonderful stay and we can highly recommend this home.
We were planning to camp at Volcano National Park but unfortunately it is closed at this time. We are so glad we found this beautiful home instead! The owners are great communicators and very welcoming. The home is beautiful, private, surrounded by native plants, clean and comfortable. It’s also convenient to the towns of Hilo and Volcano. We would love to come again. Thank you May and Mike for your hospitality!
We had a wonderful time here would highly recommend. Kathy, Chuck and May were all awesome and we appreciate their kindness. Great location for spectacular site seeing for the entire Big Island of Hawaii. Much respect for Pele, her mother earth with ever changing landscape and planet would love to visit again sometime soon.
Thanks and kind regards,
Kathleen, Shannon and Billy from NY/CTarea
Our family of four really enjoyed our stay at the Bamboo Retreat. Not only was the property beautiful, quiet and secluded, the home itself was spacious, comfortable, updated and exceptionally well maintained. The beds themselves were very comfortable too.
This is clearly a house that the owners use themselves, as it was well stocked with kitchen tools and supplies. To our pleasant surprise, we were even given some food and coffee, which was very helpful since we arrived late after our flight from the mainland. The lemon tree was in full production — we made great lemonade.
Although this house is a couple miles off the main road, its location was great for exploring Volcano National Park, Hilo and the Puna region. So many fun things to see and do: lava hikes, snorkeling tidal pools, cave exploration, botanical gardens, Uncle Roberts farmers market (Wednesday night).
Certainly a great place to stay on the East side of the island.
