The beach was very close by and so easy to get to. The cottage was very clean and well equipped. It was adorable inside and out. It was in a private area with a beautiful view of the mountains from our road and a sandy beach nearby. We will def be returning.
Mango Cottage is a great home base for exploring the island. 2nd time staying here. Host is super cool and helpful. If you need anything during your stay, he's there for you! The cottage has everything you need- plus the bedroom is air conditioned. It might sound odd to think AC is needed, but the end of summer can get toasty-so if you're comparing different places, be sure to consider AC! The neighborhood is a quiet and friendly gem - the beach access entry points are steps away, lots to explore, sunsets are amazing (there's a guy who regularly brings his pet pig!), snorkeling with all those pesky turtles and colorful fish. Pay attention to the tides-totally changes access / beach. If you hit a high tide, enjoy the view and come back at low for an amazing experience. One of our favorites from this trip was just walking outside the cottage and star gazing - it was rather mesmerizing. Mango Cottage is close enough to walk to the Fairmount along the beach if you need a resort fix. Hapuna Beach is a short drive-you don't even need to get on the Queen's Highway.
Perfect beach cottage steps from a really cool public access park. You will absolutely love the Puako neighborhood. There are around 10 beach access points to explore nearby. The Mango cottage sits near the end of a dead end road (from a map it might look like the road keeps going but a few hundred yards past the house it’s closed to vehicles, you can bike/walk it). It’s only a short walk to a super cool petroglyph trail. Do it early or late for the best lighting. We would also see multiple owls every night just down the road from the cottage. The cottage has an excellent outdoor shower. We never used the indoor one, outside was too perfect. The beach chairs and umbrella were great for the local beaches. Snorkeling is great in this area, bring your gear or rent locally. This place is a true gem. 10/10 recommend. Next time we will stay for much longer than three nights!
The Mango Cottage was the perfect place to spend our last 5 days on the island. The location is fantastic, the neighborhood is quiet and the cottage is beautifully landscaped and comfortable. Friendly and accommodating hosts made the stay even better. We hope to return soon!
Mango Cottage instantly had me on Island time.
17 days in Puako!! If you know..... you know! Rick and Scott (and wife) are great hosts. We will return, we started planning the day we left their place. Many thanks for their hospitality, conversation and great property!
My wife and I loved our stay in the Mango Cottage in Puako. Rick was nearby on the property (in the back-house) and he was attentive if we had any requests but respectful of our privacy. We took advantage of the prime location and snorkeled and visited the sea turtles at least once a day. The outdoor shower was great. We look forward to our next visit!
Puako is a gem. Great host, community and nature!
Nice small cottage. Beach across the road but it is mainly large lava boulders so you need to drive to get to a sandy beach. I did see people work their way through the lava to snorkel.
Every think about our stay at Mango Cottage in Puako was nice and easy. Location just off the beach was a breeze. The cottage was clean and simple. And Scott, the host, was responsive and helpful at all times.
We enjoyed exploring the area from the Mango Cottage. The surrounding area is just stunning! Great snorkeling right across the street. We enjoyed the comforts of the Mango Cottage-well equipped kitchen, super comfortable mattress, birds waking us in the morning. We hope to return to see the manta rays. Thanks, Scott!
Puako is a unique little area on the Big Island. Great climate and snorkelling, with nice house and yard. Owner very nice.
This place is not glitzy at all but is homey and has what we needed to be comfortable and more. Love the outdoor shower, easy access to the neighborhood beach, and well equipped kitchen. Neighbors treated us like we belonged there! Scott was available for anything we needed like beach advice, barbecue skewers, and figuring out little quirks of the cottage. Would definitely stay here again!
These were our last 2 days on this island and this was exactly what I hoped for- local style and proximity to secluded shady awesome beaches. Would have loved to stay here longer or the whole time but we explored Kona first then Hilo side. Having once lived on Kauai myself years ago- this is what I remember and longed for!! We hope to return someday for longer! Mahalo! Kim & Pat, Margaux and Jacqui
This was such an excellent place to stay. Location on Puako Rd is a great part of island and super access to snorkeling and shoreline. The Mango Cottage had very nice quality amenities and Rick was so kind and helpful at every turn. I am for sure hoping to plan another trip back to stay at this property. I thought it was a very good value for all of the amenities and location.
wonderful location and very roomy.
Great stand alone cottage with it's own parking. Coast access one door down. You can walk along a beautiful coastal trail or just sit and take in the stunning views.
