We stayed here for three nights on a family vacation. The house was very clean and comfortable. I would say that it is a little “bare bones” when it comes to extra linens and cookware. When they say bring in everything you need to cook, they aren’t kidding. Some very basic things are missing from the kitchen (cooking sheets, salt) towels are limited to one set per guest. They were very helpful in bringing extra towels when called. The pool was very clean and my family enjoyed the back patio and pool area.
Great spot with everything you need
Loved our stay at this property! Perfectly located in a quiet neighborhood, 20 minutes from downtown Hilo & one block from the breathtaking ocean front! The property was super spacious & comfortable, allowing a lot of privacy for each room, while still feeling cozy! We adored the outside lava rock shower! I would plan stay again & highly recommend the property!
Stopped here to hit Volcano National Park, which is 30 minutes away. We were a short walk to the cliffs where you cannot swim but are amazed by the power of the ocean and the natural beauty of the island. I have been to Hilo before but never appreciated this aspect. The cliffs are dangerous with young kids so keep your eye out for crashing waves. The home was a perfect place for us to take some quite time after being in hotels and play card games and cool off in the pool . Beds were very comfortable. If you are an AC person or not comfortable with mother nature coming into your living quarters this is not the location for you. We loved it and appreciated the attention to detail that the owners put into the home.
5 stars for Beautiful. No stars for amenities unless you consider 4 adult rain coats amenities. The beds in 3 of the rooms are great, not so in the laundry room. Property manager is stingy with paper products and trash bags, but they are quick to respond to fix what should have been working when you arrived. Luckily Walmart is a half hour away. The kids loved the 4 ft deep pool and that is mainly why we rented it. Door lockbox is difficult to open.
Clean, well stocked with beach towels and cooking utensils. The pool is a blast and the layout of the home is perfect for a family with school age or older kids. The host was great and responded promptly when we had a question. Would stay here again!

First of all I have to highlight the service of the saltwater team. They were so responsive and helpful - just amazing. We stayed in two houses, first the house of paddles and then the house of shangrilo. Both houses are great but if I would have to chose again I would always chose the house of shangrilo. The pool and the view are just breathtaking. Maybe just one thing, the smaller bed in the house of paddles is quite old and creaks a lot if you move, especially if two people sleep in it. Which is a little aggravating if you have such a light sleep as I have. Apart from that the house is great.

We’ve stayed here twice now. It’s a beautiful home at a great location. Wonderful for a family or couples alike. One downside since the last time we stayed is that there was a new home built adjacent to it and there is little privacy on the pool areas like there used to be. My only recommendation would be to add some foliage or increase the fence height around the pool. Otherwise, it’s amazing. Would totally recommend. Very clean and in great shape.

Beautiful, landscaped property with 2 master suites and a pool kept two families feeling relaxed and at home. Located in the tropical Puna section of the Hawaii, it was a nice place to retire each night when we finished a days exploration of the island. We will definitely be back to this enchanting island and will stay in this beautiful hale when we return.

We visited House of Paddles with a group of friends and kids. The house and space was beautiful. Plenty of room for everyone. Property was as listed. The only downside we experienced was just with the cleanliness of the pool. I think it would help to have the pump running for more than four hours a day, especially with a group of people using the pool and all the plant matter around. The lack of AC wasn’t an issue for us, but if you’re sensitive to heat know that this place is warm! You can get a nice breeze though at night, but we were blessed with calm warm days. And if you get warm, just take a dip in the pool. Thank you for a beautiful vacation. Will definitely return!
The house is beautiful but not dusted very well. The dish washer leaked all over the kitchen. The smoke detectors weren’t in the living room or off-suite. The pool was awesome for the grandkids to use everyday.the permits on the door for renting are expired. The headboard in the first bedroom has the metal coming off and is very sharp (someone tried taping it but it is not a great fix). Location is great and would use the house again!

The house was fantastic, if a little out of the way, set in a jungle like area. We booked this for the pool but found we could not get in or out safely. The ladder was totally wrong with a long step down. We were very disappointed. Didn't like the Roku streaming TV. Missed the playoff games.

I almost don't want to leave an honest review so nobody else will rent this place ever. This home is a beautiful oasis for your vacation. The master suite with the outdoor shower is incredible for just enough privacy. The layout of the home is perfect with roomy bedrooms and a huge living area for family. The lanai and pool were our favorites every evening after a day of adventures. Just a quick walk to the ocean. The location is in a quiet neighborhood that is a great central location to Hilo one way or Volcano Park the other way. We had lots of exploring time while staying here. This home made the second place we stayed at in Kona seem like a slum (and it was nice too). We didn't read the instruction book well when we first got there so we missed the part about keeping food scraps in the freezer to keep bugs from getting in the trash but after we saw it, dug our food scraps out, and knew what we were doing, it was all good. Maybe a little note in the kitchen about that would be a good reminder for future guests who get too caught up in the magic of Hawaii to follow directions straight away.We will definitely be back again and hope to be able to rent the House of Paddles. I've never stayed in a better VRBO rental.

The house had pretty much everything we needed. Loved the private backyard pool and used it every afternoon and evening. The location allows you to travel to so many day trips in all different directions on the island. The kitchen was great and the bbq very convenient too. Highly recommend you seriously check this out for a fabulous vacation getaway.

My family of four planned to do more running around the island but House of Paddles was so relaxing that we cut some activities out so we could hang out by the pool. We also enjoyed walking in the neighborhood and to the ocean cliffs a block away. It felt like time slowed down. We bonded over great food at the giant dining table and games at night. The house is big enough and the rooms separated for privacy so we all took time to relax with books and games (for the kids). We highly recommend this home for a relaxing visit to the Big Island!

We visited the Big Island for our son’s Senior graduation trip! This house was perfect for our family! The pool was a nice addition, especially on the days we wanted to just relax! My husband and I stayed in the separate suite with the lava shower and it was perfect! I would highly recommend this property!
