Hale Hapuna is in a small residential village on the hillside overlooking the ocean in Kawaihae near the harbor. It is located between Kailua-Kona (40 minutes) and Hilo (90 minutes) and 30 minutes from KOA airport in Kona.
Just up the hill (15 minutes) are the ranching town of Waimea and the eclectic town of Hawi, surrounded by acres of green hills and pastures. Plan your day trips to explore these charming towns and be home for sunset on the deck at Hale Hapuna.
You are never far from the many activities here on the Big Island whether it's snorkeling, diving, ziplining, shopping, surfing, golfing, dining, stargazing at the top of Mauna Kea or just reading a book on the beach. It's all here waiting for you.

Stepping through the gate kind of took my breath away. Beautiful multi-level outdoor space with several seating areas and outdoor dining table. Spacious kitchen/dining/living area nicely decorated with Hawaiian and Southeast Asian art. Single full bath was perfect for us as a couple but might be challenging if staying with as many as this property could sleep.
Location is a bit of a drive from groceries (8 miles to Foodland in Mauna Lani complex) and a pharmacy but proximity to a couple of the best beaches (Hapuna etc) and historic/cultural sites make it one of the best locations for outdoor activities. It was our first visit so we’re not familiar with the Big Island but I suspect this is one of the best locations available. Note that Walmart and Costco have locations near the airport so a little planning would help for families and groups that’d need more food supplied. Kitchen was particularly well supplied with equipment and utensils for a rental.
Foodies and couples feeling romantic will find fancy resort dining within ten minutes. Merriman’s is about 15 minutes toward Waimea. Less expensive options are even closer at Seafood Bar (good for families). Blue Dragon is close too but seemed rowdy for us. Some places are closed Saturday night or close early - so be aware.
All in all a great value in spacious and peaceful surroundings.

Absolutely fabulous place to stay by the best beaches on the island. This was the perfect rental for our family, which included my 10-year-old daughter. The ocean-view from the ourdoor balcony is dreamy, the outdoor patio/garden is a Zen retreat, the inside was perfectly clean, well-designed, and outfitted with all you need. Beach gear included towels, boogie boards, and chairs (we didn’t see kids’ beach toys, though they may have been hiding). Do bring your own coffee (non provided). I would not hesitate to recommend this place to my dearest friends.

Second stay in this little house, and we'll definitely try to book it again. Manager response was quick and positive when we requested an additional day - hooray! Bed very comfortable; kitchen with so many cooking items that I was tempted to actually prepare meals, lol. The fragrance of the plants and citrus trees on property was the icing on this fabulous cake.

I love the beautiful backyard. The home itself is very small, including the living room and bedrooms however the enclosed yard makes up for it.

Great location, perfectly decorated, extremely relaxing, hidden gem
We are thankful that we found this place, neighborhood is quiet and you feel "kūloko" (local) and welcomed.
Comfortable bedrooms, well stocked kitchen, relaxing Zen garden, Scenic Lani upper deck, perfect for morning coffee sunrises, happy hour sunsets, and exploring stars at night.
Joe, the host, was more than accommodating and available any time you need help or have questions (thanks, Joe).
Attention to details are what make this property special, modern kitchen, plenty of seating inside and out, outdoor shower, grill, boogie boards, air-conditioning, and decorated with style and class.
We have been fortunate to travel and have stayed at numerous VRBO properties, and this one stands out as one of the best all around !
So grateful we found this place, hope you get a chance to experience it yourself.

Vacationing with adult children. Lovely home in a quiet neighborhood. The location was perfect for us. We specifically did not want to stay in a big resort and this cottage is in close proximity to the northern Kohala Coast beaches so a great alternative. Easy drive to north and east sides of island as well and to Kailua-Kona. Great base for our trip.
Super comfortable beds, nice living room with comfortable seating with large screen TV. Very well-equipped kitchen and nice dining area. Lanai was amazing - extending the living space with another dining table and grill PLUS large area with seating for kicking back and relaxing PLUS the upper deck for early morning coffee and sunsets. Outdoor shower was great - you'll need it after the beach! Washer/dryer was one of my prerequisites for our trip and came in handy throughout the stay. Air conditioning was welcome for relief from the heat later in the afternoons. Overhead ceiling fans also available in all rooms.
Property manager was very nice, super responsive and helpful with any questions we had.
There was also a detailed book containing helpful information about the cottage and things to do on the island.
I highly recommend this property!

Probably one of the nicest VRBO’s we have ever stayed in…thoughtful touches throughout, well stocked kitchen, great guide book…this place is amazing and we would definitely stay here again!
