Hale 'Apapane is a large, well decorated home located near the heart of Volcano Village and 1 mile from Volcano National Park. It has 2.5 baths, 3 bedrooms, 4 beds, a large living area, and a 4 person hot tub. We have a fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, hot tub, back deck with a gas grill, and a covered basketball court. The house is set in the native forest with giant Hapu‘u ferns, ‘o‘hia trees, and native birds all around.
My wife and I moved here in 2006 with our kids, designed and built this house with other family. We lived here for the next few years, worked on the landscaping, and decorated it with local art and photography. The house has its own solar energy and filtered, drinkable catchment water.
The house has a open floor plan downstairs and lots of windows to look out on the rainforest. It is a good layout for large groups or families as it facilitates connection, but also has private feeling bedrooms upstairs that have some separation from each other. The master bedroom has its own bathroom, and there is another full bathroom upstairs for the other two bedrooms. We have a laundry room with a washer and dryer, a smart TV with high speed wifi.
The covered basketball court is a big hit with families with kids, as it does rain in Volcano often. We have some board games and toys as well. The back deck is set looking out on the rainforest and lush landscape and the hot tub is a great place to unwind after a day of activity at Volcanoes National Park or somewhere else.
We are a 5 minute drive to Volcanoes National Park and a 2 minute drive to Volcano Village. Volcano is a cute little town with a few restaurants, general stores, a community center, playground, and a nice farmers market on Sundays.
Volcano is at 3500 feet in a high elevation tropical rainforest, so it is never too hot. It can be chilly and damp depending on the weather, so it is nice to have the mini split heater and wood stove....

Beautiful home in an Ohia forest, with native Hawaiian birds singing at morning and evening…flitting scarlet red apapane… did not get a chance to shoot any hoops or get into the jacuzzi, but enjoyed the comforts of home so close to Volcano National Park.
The host Adam was very responsive to any thing we needed and provided great local info on places to eat or visit.
My brother in law has visited the Volcano area numerous times, and commented the home was the first he had ever rented or visited that was totally free of any damp smell so common in homes with less efficient heating systems.
My wife and I look forward to another visit.

It rained every day we were there, but we were still able to use the hot tub and stayed warm and cozy with the heater. Lots of space to spread out with the teenagers and grandparents.
Loved being tucked into the fern forest, seeing orchids, lemons and bananas growing in the yard.

House is as advertised and in perfect location for exploring Volcanoes National Park. Spacious and clean with everything one would need. We enjoyed the hot tub after long days of travel and hiking. The kids loved playing basketball too.

Beautiful three bedroom home (all bedrooms upstairs). Nice grounds and a very welcome hot tub after long hikes in the Park or surrounding areas. Kitchen is well organized. Go to one of the food trucks for dinner and you should have enough food left over for several meals.

Perfect home in a stunning location. Enjoyed the peace and restful tropical environment. Took the recommendation from our host and attended the Sunday Community Famers market and had an enjoyable morning. Quick trip to volcanoes, black sand beach, stunning ocean views, lava tubes and Hilo.

Hale Apapane is one of our go-to places to stay when we visit Volcano. The property is always spotless, well-appointed and a pleasure to visit. We enjoyed the location, the fern forest, and the host's amenities. We will be back on our next visit.

The property was spacious and lovely, the surroundings were lush, and amenities were enjoyable (kitchen, laundry, hot tub, wifi, etc). There was no fruit and english muffins - just 2 individual bags of dried mango... We do not drink coffee... So we made a run for high priced hot chocolate and pancake mix. This location is very convenient to the park but limited in services/shopping. I would stay here again!

We rented this and the adjacent sister home for our group of 14 family. The place was elegant, clean, comfortable and everyone loved the jungle hot tub. And the coquis were a delightful serenade at night. It’s a 5 minute drive to the park.
