This is truly a once in a lifetime place. It was so much better than pictures could ever convey. We stayed two nights and it was some of the best sleep we've had... Not only was the king bed comfortable, it was so peaceful with the grass swaying, the trees rustling, the wind breathing... We sat for hours on the lanai just gazing at Maui that was right in front of us.Every single attention to detail made it special. The lamp fixtures, the doors, the fireplace, the stove, the furniture, the instruments... It felt like stepping back in time. My partner is a carpenter so he also appreciated the timber framing, there are no nails! Only wooden pegs. That hammock had an orchid growing on the tree. The coffee beans were delicious, the fire was always provided with keawe logs every night. Fantastic host, friendly animals, we are definitely going to have to come back.
One of the best porches I’ve ever enjoyed! Expansive ocean views plus storm clouds that roll thru and Maui in the distance. Friendly farm animals to feed. Super clean and antiques everywhere. Plenty of space for exploring. Just a 10 minute drive to Hawi town. Chris was great to work with. We would stay again!
We don’t have enough great things to stay about this property and our hosts. Chris was fantastic! We enjoyed getting to know the animals, which ranged from Billy goats to horses to sheep to cows to the Pony! The views were fantastic and the grounds were meticulously maintained. So many neat spots to relax on this property, The home was well appointed and well stocked. The bed was very comfortable, as was the rest of the house. We cannot wait to return and stay here again! Thank you for sharing your piece of heaven with us!
My husband and I stayed here as the last stop on our honeymoon. The lodge was incredible! Chris thought of every detail to make a charming and unique spot in the world! I wish we had stayed longer! The views looking toward Hana across the water were gorgeous, and I will never forget sitting on the porch watching the sunsets, rainbows, and horses. The house had everything we hoped for and more. We'll definitely be back!
We had a wonderful time staying here. My kids and I do enjoy an amazing sunrise with coffee and was able to grill out under the stars with an amazing sunset. The owners were phenomenal and not only had great communication but also were excellent hosts and gave us great ideas for things to do while on the big island. I would 100% come back here, and the town that is nearby Waia. Is perfect for breakfast or even dinner and shopping. Very small town with boutique shops but just a great small town relaxation vibe to it.
Beautiful location, scenery and very unique home.Chris and Carol were excellent hosts, both respecting our privacy and engaging with us about the location and horses, plus!Definitely recommend for a relaxing visit.
As soon as we walked in we noticed, along with all the open windows, a strong smell of mildew and mold. Unfortunately, my wife is allergic to mold and mildew and had an adverse reaction, so we had to leave after just 10 minutes. I tried calling Chris to explain the situation and discuss a partial refund, as we couldn't stay for either of the 2 nights booked. While on the phone with VRBO, Chris’ wife came to talk to me (guess he was busy). She immediately got defensive and claimed it was impossible for the house to have mold due to its cedar frame. However, while cedar is mold-resistant, leaving windows open in a wet climate affects walls, bedding, and upholstery. Despite my wife visibly suffering from allergy symptoms, she didn’t ask if she was okay–only caring about the money. She then blamed me for booking, claiming that we disturbed the previous guest who wanted to extend their stay, even though we booked months in advance.Chris never returned our calls but messaged on VRBO, first claiming the smell was “cedar” before blaming us for not disclosing the allergy and saying “had we known she is so sensitive to the environment we might have not taken your reservation.” Not only is such a statement discriminatory against someone with a health condition, but if he knew of mold/mildew issues, it is the host's legal and ethical responsibility to disclose that. A rental posing health risks is unacceptable, and their dismissive, discriminatory attitude was extremely disappointing.
Very peaceful and beautiful
This is a gorgeous property in a quiet neighborhood. Wonderful view.
The only thing surpassing the amazing environment, are
the magnificently charming owners Chris and Carol
The host was extraordinarily knowledgeable and the house provided a wonderful window into living in Hawi like it was years ago, plus modern conveniences.
The ranch animals really are just on the other side of the fence. Great Internet connection.
The property and view exceeded expectations. The grounds were beautifully landscaped and the nightly sunsets were amazing. The lodge had everything we needed to cook our own meals and have quiet nights in. My fiancée enjoyed the claw foot bathtub. The place even came with a log and fire supplies to have a cozy fire in the fireplace. We loved feeding the hosts beautiful animals each morning and Chris was very kind and informative with great tips and heretical pearls about the Kohala area. Would recommend to any friend and we will certainly be back in the future!
This place was an amazing find! Set up in the ranch lands near Hawi, it is a side of Hawaii we didn't know existed. The house itself is decorated as a ranch house. The cowboy decor is gorgeous and a lot of fun. There is a huge fireplace, all laid and ready to light, a claw-foot tub and a loft with amazing views. Our favorite spot was on the huge veranda where we could sit and relax and look out at the horses and goats and then on past the fields, all the way to the ocean. On clear days, we could see Maui. The kitchen is well supplied and Chris has provided everything you could need. I highly recommend completing your stay with a horseback ride with Paniolo Adventures on one of the local ranches.
We can't wait to come back :)
We stayed at this property for a few days and it was amazing! It makes you feel like you are in one of those pastoral alpine locations but you'll find it in the middle of Pacific with the incredible ocean view! The house is also on the best scenic drive in Big Island. Will come back to stay definitely!
This was a wonderful place to spend our final three days on the Big Island. Loved having some space for the kids to run around! The location is absolutely beautiful and so peaceful. It’s away from all of the busy resort areas but close enough that you can still do a day at the beach without too long of a drive. The view from the large porch is stunning — perfect sunset-viewing location and great for star gazing. The lodge is clearly well cared for by the owners and we enjoyed the uniqueness of the decor. Chris was also very helpful and generous in sending us an item that my son left behind. Highly recommended!
This beautiful lodge is undoubtedly one of the best places to stay. It is spotless and has absolutely everything you need to make meals. It is rustic, yet modern, the best of both worlds. I'd stay here for morning coffee and the sunsets from the front porch alone.
Beautiful home and surroundings. Absolutely peaceful. No traffic, leaf blowers, loud neighbors, barking dogs. Sitting on the porch watching the sunset and the owners cool animals. Great place to relax and get some rest. Plenty to do close by.
One of the best vrbo’s we have stayed in. Even comes with a decent guitar and a very nice bass ukulele. Thanks to the owners for making this availability.
This property was everything and more. I wasn't sure if we were in Montana or Hawaii ! The views from the deck were amazing. The animals and owner on the property a real bonus. We barbecued in the evening and sat on the porch relaxing for many hours. Everything was fantastic. We will be back. Thank you so much for an amazing stay .
Seven days at a wonderful place overlooking the Pacific, with Maui in the distance. We relaxed on the porch, took in many of the “must sees” in the North Kohala area. So much to see and Chris’ place is a great center point.
We’d go back in an instant.
We enjoyed our stay at Kohala Lodge while there on a business trip. The grounds are beautiful and I adored feeding Pua the Shetland Pony & Nova the spotted horse as well as the goats! The rustic ambiance of the lodge combined with the dense trees & green surroundings had me begin to relax my city mind & feel close to nature. I felt a real positive energy vibration while there & I hope to get to visit again! Thank you Chris Wej for your kind welcome✨
Wonderful wonderful 4 days at Kohala Lodge!!!
A slice of Heaven✨
Thank you Chris and Carol for this experience!!
Beautiful house on a beautiful property.
This is the best VRBO we have ever stayed in. So quiet and secluded. Views were just breathtaking. The host, Chris, was out every day taking care of the huge grassy lot and everything was so well manicured. Hope to go back in the near future and take our grown kids.
Thank you Chris!!!
Kohala Lodge is a relaxing, peaceful, mind expanding, inspirational experience with expansive, wonderous views. Chris & Carol are the most gracious, interesting, philosophical hosts I have ever had the privilege to interact with. The place is impeccable! I feel honored and humbled they allowed us to share their little slice of heaven. My husband and I enjoy places off the beaten path, grilling up our own food in the well appointed kitchen, and snuggling up to a cozy fire. Watching the goats and horses graze in the field, while birds dance across the sky, a rainbow appears, with Maui peeking out from the hazy clouds in the distance. Words cannot describe this amazing place! Bring a warm wind breaker, an open mind, and enjoy the countryside experience. Mahalo! Deepest appreciation.
The pictures on the listing do not do justice to the actual accommodations and location.
The views are spectacular, the grounds are meticulously maintained, and the house is clean, well decorated and the beds are super comfortable!
I highly recommend this property to anyone who visits the big islaand!
Absolutely stunning property. Hosts were gracious and it was the perfect location for exploring this part of the island. Views of ocean were great. Would stay again.
Chris and Carol have created a unique Hawaii experience!
Meticulous grounds, sturdy safe home, a view like no other, Critters.....
Their Hawaiian Western Style is throughout the property, very tastefully presented.
All photos, videos available online are accurate.
Chris/Carol take pride in their property and guests
We have already booked another visit......
This house and location was otherworldly. The feeling of a 100-year-old homestead, with all modern amenities, in a serene setting with incredible views of the Pacific and Maui. We could’ve spent the entire time on the huge front porch. And we appreciated Chris leaving us feed to give to the resident horses and goats. The location also gave us great access to everything up and down the northern Kohala coast. We’d absolutely stay again. Mahalo!
Don’t hesitate.
