At the end of the road is Pololu Valley and is accessible by hiking only. Pololu Valley boasts a beautiful beach and a forest. If you head up the mountain towards Hilo you can visit the 13 observatories on top of Mauna Kea (4WD required - 2WD to the Visitor Center) for sunrise or sunset.
