Overall, the property was okay. When we came up to the property, it was beautiful - tucked in a secluded jungle landscape. Check in was easy enough, directions were clear. Will say you can absolutely tell what numbers were used for the gate, because the two numbers used were a lot more dirty then any others, so I assumed they don't change the gate code often. Large area of greenery to park, which was nice to see. Then when we actually went into the house was where things started going not so great. We didn't feel like the house was up to par with the cleanliness and felt like it was cleaned possibly surface level, but lots of dust in areas we touched, bugs, webs, etc. Sheets for the beds seem clean on the inside, but there were a lot of bugs laying on top. Then the 2 bed 2 bathroom layout was awkward. To get to one of the rooms and bathroom, you have to go through the other bathroom. It seems like part of the house was built as an attachment and to get to the attachment roombathroom, you need to pass through the main bathroom. Most of the lights but 1 in the living room did not work, so that room was unused. The biggest problem we dealt with were the bugs, which is common in Hawaii and being in a very tropical rainy location of the island, but it was excessive. Seen multiple lg/sm cockroaches a day, geckos everywhere and so was there poop, multiple other bugs just all the time. The house was not sealed well at all, gaps in doors and windows. We found the stay okay
Private escape. We were concerned at first about no ac since we were here in June, but the breeze flowing thru was great. Even a little chilly at night. Beautiful grounds, great hot tub loved seating on the porch. Would highly recommend
This property is all about natural beauty. There are frogs, geckos, snails, and cats. You're inevitably going to find some bugs inside the house, but nothing that'll bite you (didn't see any mosquitos). Be careful of the stairs at night, but the host has night lights around the house, so you should be ok. Other than that, this is a kid friendly place, they'll love exploring the property, which has one gate, but we still felt safe. My only gripes were that the cookware was questionable, it was a challenge to find a pan to use without a lot of scrapes on it, but this is not really the host's fault, as it's the past guests. Also, the electrical switches around the house need to be better labeled, you'll end of switching everything to see what is for what and still not know. The kitchen was stocked with essential spices and oils for cooking. The hot tub appeared to be functional, but we didn't use it.
Charming house, but we weren’t able to use the beautiful upstairs bedroom because there were multiple geckos hanging out in there and there was feces on the bed and floor. The owner said we could change the bedspread but I was afraid they would use the bathroom on me while I was sleeping. Also there were a lot of bugs. You would always expect to see a few on most Hawaii properties, but there were obvious gaps in doors and walls where they could easily get in.Also, the ceiling fans were filthy and we couldn’t use them. The owner did offer to come and clean them, but I just didn’t feel like dealing with it so we used a floor fan. We found ONE that was clean enough to use. The rest of the house was mostly clean. Although there was also feces on the kitchen floor. The adorable geckos do poop a lot.
Mapquest got us to the house easily. The hosts helped us with everything we needed. We chose the house for the hot tub because my husband has chronic back pain and hot tub jets help him relax. The hot tub did not have jets that massaged. They just moved the water slightly and only lasted for 5 minutes. That made our stay very difficult for my husband. Also the layout of bathrooms to bedrooms was unusual. All in all we had a good time but not as great as we’d hoped for.
This was just the right amount of funky in this spot. It's a very unusual house in a quiet (except for the local wildlife) area. Layout is weird but workable. The kitchen had all the basics for cooking, tons of linens in the bath, "smart" TV (bring your logins). It's 2 miles from the main road, so stop by the grocery store first. And bonus friendly kitty from next door!
Fun place to stay. Lush plants surround the property. So nice to sit on the deck in the evening listening to the birds and frogs. Feels very private.
This property suited our needs completely--close to family, room for everyone, a place to cook meals, comfortable sleeping and relaxing areas, laundry facilities and just a cool house. The house embodies the "aloha" spirit. Mahalos!
Loved the privacy of this rental...gated...very safe...beautiful property. House stocked with everything you might need. Will definitely rent again.
Loved the house and history. Would stay here again for sure!
We really enjoyed the funky fun location and architecture. There was everything we needed in terms of kitchen supplies and linens. We were there in late August and there is no AC but lots of fans so It was pretty hot and humid. Just be prepared. We slept better when we threw the sheets in the dryer for a few minutes just before going to bed. The hot tub on the lanai is lovely! And the private jungle location is lots of fun!
Love, love, love this place! Upon entry, the place was even more whimsical than the listing leads one. There were producing fruit trees in the yard and the garden was so pleasurable to walk through. The king-sized beds were very comfortable and the breeze throughout the house left no need for A/C. The property manager was quick to answer any questions we had and was very attentive and nice. Even though the property seems remote there were stores within a 10-minute drive for last-minute dinner needs. We were graciously granted early check-in and late check-out. We stayed 5 days and it was not enough!! Can't wait to return and stay again. Mahalo nui to our hosts!!!
It was very nice place Yard is beautiful!
We selected this property because the house was so unique and full of character. It did not disappoint! It was built by a shipbuilder from an old water cistern with additional rooms and a generous veranda built around it. One of the most impressive aspects was the large lot with lush tropical landscape. Sitting on the veranda you felt like you were in the middle of a jungle. We’d sit out there every morning and evening listening to the wildlife. The house was close to a couple small towns, not far from Hilo and several other destinations we wanted to explore on the Big Island.
The floor plan was a little awkward in that you had to get to the second bedroom through the bathroom or from the veranda, but being a small family we made it work.
Thom was extremely helpful and responsive to all out questions and offered excellent recommendations of what to see.
