Property Description
Hale Ma‘ukele is a large, well decorated home located near the heart of Volcano Village and 1 mile from Volcano National Park. It has 2.5 baths, 3 bedrooms, 4 beds, a large living area, and a 4 person hot tub. We have a fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, hot tub, a nice back yard, and a back deck with a gas grill. The house is set in the native forest with giant Hapu‘u ferns, ‘o‘hia trees, and native birds all around.
My wife and I moved here in 2006 with our kids, designed and built this house with other family. For the nest year we worked on the landscaping, and decorated it with local art and photography. The house has its own solar energy and filtered, drinkable catchment water.
The house has a open floor plan downstairs and lots of windows to look out on the rainforest. It is a good layout for large groups or families as it facilitates connection, but also has private feeling bedrooms upstairs that have some separation from each other. The master bedroom has its own bathroom, and there is another full bathroom upstairs for the other two bedrooms. We have a laundry room with a washer and dryer, a smart TV with high speed wifi.
The back deck gets sun and is a great place to drink coffee, eat, relax and grill. The hot tub is set in a private corner of the property in the rainforest and is a great place to unwind after a day of activity at Volcanoes National Park or somewhere else.
We are a 5 minute drive to Volcanoes National Park and a 2 minute drive to Volcano Village. Volcano is a cute little town with a few restaurants, general stores, a community center, playground, and a nice farmers market on Sundays.
Volcano is at 3500 feet in a high elevation tropical rainforest, so it is never too hot. It can be chilly and damp depending on the weather, so it is nice to have the mini split heater.

A review is only as good as if I am candid. We brought our whole family here to experience the Volcano area. This was our second time staying here. The first time was in 2016. We had a great time, but I will say that the place felt a little tired. The elements of Volcano are hard on the houses, I am sure. We only used the hot tub once. We washed some bedding before use due to it feeling not clean. The host assured me it was, but my eyes said different. My suggestion would be to update the bedding and towels as they are very worn. Also, the sofa could use a good cleaning. The bones of the house are simply beautiful. It just needs a bit of love. Overall, it was a nice start to our vacation. Make sure you bring everything you need food wise with you. I would recommend this house to rent for sure. I am sure the host wants it top notch!.

This beautiful home is tastefully decorated and equipped with everything. It is so relaxing to sit on the patio listening to the song birds in the tropical garden. It is very convenient for visiting Volcano Park.

Great location close to the village and national park, with lush and lovely landscaping and classic Volcano Ohia and fern forest all around. The home itself is very spacious and comfortable, with huge windows all around to enjoy the cool morning (or evening) air and birdsong. The kitchen has everything we needed and the hidden hot tub was certainly a favorite. Comfy beds! Some minor appliance issues but owner Adam was responsive, communicated well and gave prompt assistance. We would certainly stay again!

The house is in a super quiet and private neighborhood very close to Volcano village and the Volcano National park (but too far to walk to them). Jungle all around it, you can only see a little bit of one other place. The home is very environmentally friendly, it’s got solar electricity and uses processed rain water for the water supply. The kitchen, dining, living areas and covered porch and half bath are all on the main floor. Three bedrooms and two full baths are upstairs (one bath is in the master bedroom, the other is in the hall). Heating was via a single central mini split unit so we had to leave doors open to ensure the furthest rooms got warmed up (Volcano can get a bit chilly at night). It was clean and the owner was responsive to messages. But it was a bit under equipped compared to similar places we’ve stayed and some things needed replacing; sheets in both beds we used had holes and tears, there’s only a dustpan and brush but no broom or vacuum, and a couple other minor things of that nature. But overall we had a great stay, had lots of space, and it’s a good location.

I'm hard-pressed to think of anything negative about this property. We were in town for the Hawaii Bird Conservation Marathon, which started at the Volcano golf course, so we needed a place nearby. This VRBO was only a couple miles from the start line, so a great location. The village of Volcano is very small, but we found a good restaurant and a general store next door with a surprisingly great drink selection. As other reviewers have noted, the house is somewhat near others but you get a total sense of seclusion when staying here since it is tucked in among the trees. We only heard other people twice in three days. The house itself is beautiful, with hardwood floors and nice updated kitchen and baths. There's a great TV in case you want to watch television in paradise. The furnishings and bedding are comfortable. Everyone loved the hot tub in the backyard! There's plenty of space in the house, with two full baths and a half-bath, three bedrooms, a formal dining room, and a nice deck. It's rain forest, but I saw fewer bugs than I see in my own house in the US Midwest. It's a water-catchment system, but totally potable, plus fine for showering and washing clothes. Even if I didn't need a place near the start of the marathon, I would still stay at this location, as it was beautiful. Bigger and better than the place where we stayed in Kona, for less money. Check-in was extremely easy. No need for conversations with the host. A perfect stay!

The home and property are just beautiful. The hot tub was a dream to use and welcome at the end of a long day hiking in the park. The house comes with all the amenities a family needs. It’s very spacious and the kitchen is well appointed! The property made our stay a real treat!
