Property Overview
Serenity, peace, and rejuvenation is here at this private cottage on a half-acre of upcountry rainforest. Lazy Lehua Cottage is for settled or adventurous couples, small families, honeymooners, artists, poets, musicians, scientists, and writers. The native birds sing while you enjoy your early morning tea or coffee. Sink into a hammock chair on one of three lanais among the Hawaiian Hapu'u ferns, flowering indigenous Ohi’a Lehua trees, and scented ginger. Breathe in the pristine night air under stars and clouds without overhead street lights, before retiring to possibly the best sleep you’ve ever had.
The cottage is located only 2 miles from restaurants, galleries, winery, golf course, and Sunday Famers’ Market in Volcano Village. The Village is an enclave of artists, National Park rangers, and scientists, near the Island’s Eastside with its hiking trails, waterfalls, fresh water pools, and black sand beaches.
Explore the world-famous Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, just 3.6 miles from the cottage. In the Hawaiian language, ‘mana’ means spiritual energy and healing power. The Park is filled with Mana! You may sense it as you trail-run or hike through the forests and steaming craters, traverse the giant lava tube, or witness new land being created at the Kilauea caldera— one of the only places in the world where this occurs. Also, check out Punalu’u beach within a 45-minute drive-- the Big Island’s most famous black sand beach where endangered sea turtles swim, rest, and lay eggs. If good coffee is your obsession, take a tour at the Ka'u Coffee Mill in Pahala and see how coffee is grown, milled, and roasted. And, of course, visit old historic downtown Hilo (45-minutes away), as well as the magical Hawai’i Tropical Botanical Garden, with its epic coastline and rare flora.
Later you can restore your sore muscles in the master bedroom's jetted tub overlooking the territory outside your window-- exactly what’s needed after a day of exploration on the Big Island. Like a young pup, you’ll feel rejuvenated and ready for more adventures! Although it's revitalizing to be lazy here, a cozy desk with a reliable internet connection is upstairs for those conscientious souls whose work follows them.
Lazy Lehua Cottage was constructed in 2004 with respect for the aina (land). Trees were hand-cut and the property was cleared in a minimally invasive manner. Trees removed from the site were recycled into the cottage’s posts and railings to blend in with the rainforest. Select cottage furniture was hand crafted— the coffee table, bar top, and bedroom headboard were all made with local, exotic, and native woods. The cottage has been maintained with immaculate and loving attention and we know you will feel its special mana when you are here.
Note: We have always been recognized for our meticulous maintenance. Because your safety and comfort are our top priorities, our cleaning and sanitizing procedures comply with guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA). We remain committed to making your stay at the Lazy Lehua Cottage safe, relaxing, and enjoyable.

We loved our stay! We were so grateful for the stocked kitchen - coffee filters, olive oil, ziploc bags! - and for the extra touches and gestures of hospitality from the hosts. The covered porches were wonderful retreats after a day of exploring, and we loved that we were close enough to the national park to come home for meals, since food options were limited in the area. Beautiful home and garden, ideal stay - my kids said "the best we've ever stayed in!"
The place was very charming throughout and well equipped. Spacious layout for family of four. Very private and beautiful property.
Beautiful house with all the amenities, especially a great kitchen and bed room. Close to town of Volcano and the National Park. Beautiful secluded yard surround the house.
Host and accommodations were amazing. Just as described in listing.
Such a beautiful home in the forest. Very private and well stocked with amenities. Volcanoes National Park is a great place to explore!
Lazy Lehuna Cottage is exactly as I pictured it, but has even more than we expected! The entire cabin is exactly as advertised, each room inviting and cozy. We spent most of our time on the front lanai, we ate at the table outside and enjoyed our coffee in the cozy front rocker and my favorite spot the hammock chair. I got up early just to sit and listen to the birds. The back lanai was a beautiful spot too! It has gorgeous wood carved furniture creating another cozy spot to sit and enjoy the views of the rainforest. We opened the windows in the master bedroom and it felt like we were sleeping in a treehouse! Slept so peacefully to the sounds of the rainforest. We loved the extras they included… snack bars, & chocolates. The kitchen was fully stocked even with coffee, filters, creamer and sugar. I loved that they had a first aid kit and other bathroom essentials. They thought of everything to make our stay perfect! They even left us current details about the volcano eruption which was super helpful making our trip to Volcano National Park easy.During our short stay we visited the park several times, and since it’s so close we headed up once at night so we could see the eruption in the dark. Unforgettable experience! We also visited the botanical gardens in Hilo, visited Akaka falls, Punaluʻu Black Sand Besch, South Point and the Volcano Farmers market. Lazy Lehuna Cottage is the perfect spot to stay when exploring the Big Island. We highly recommend!
Lehua looked great in the add and was far better in person. We loved our stay-and seriously considered asking if we could stay longer. “LLC” had everything we needed and more-we were able to cook all our meals in a delightfully comfortable setting. Coqui frogs, though invasive, were a lovely treat to fall asleep to at night. We were unbelievably close to Volcanoes NP, for the fountaining lava and close enough to summit Mauna Kea! We are deeply grateful to our hosts thoughtful outfitting of Lehua. The highlight of our vacation!
The house was well equipped and the perfect size.
This was our second time staying at the Lazy Lahua for a reason. We loved it the first time and had to come again. Not disappointed!
Clearly the owner put a lot of thought into equipping this for travelers. The coffee station, especially, wowed my husband and was the best we've ever seen in a rental. The tub worked great. It was very clean, with no bugs seen (unusual for a HI rental—the place we stayed after this had Gregor Samsa for a roommate), and that's a testiment to how well it's kept. There's every cooking implement you could ever want, but if you plan to do much cooking, pick up some cooking spray/oil and favorite spices in outer Hilo on the way there. (Pro tip: the Sack N' Save and Foodland will give you the lower "locals" price if you only give them your phone number.)If you're there on Thursday afternoon, don't miss the Volcano Village market from 3-6pm—crafts, fresh vegetables, and ready-made food like pizza and tamales. Much thanks to site manager Rebecca for alerting us that the volcano had just started erupting on the morning of our departure. She didn't have to do that, but it really made our week.
A lovely spot nestled deep in the forest with just enough fun quirky touches (granted wood railings on the lanais!) to make it special.
We loved the feel of being in a rain forest. Very quiet location. Well equipped kitchen and comfortable bed. We loved that it is located close to the park and we were rewarded with morning, afternoon and night views of eruptions - easy to go and come back later.Thank you for offering your cottage for rental.
The cottage was actually better than expected! Great location right near the park entrance and in a secluded and beautiful jungle neighborhood. The cottage was super clean and very well stocked. There were lots of small details that made it feel very welcoming and very well cared for. Our family of 4 was very comfortable there. Would very happily stay again!
Central location to most points of interest. House is visually entertaining.
This was a beautiful, magical place to stay. It has a good selection of kitchen stuff right where you’d expect, some games and beach equipment for the kids, and a small but quality selection of books and dvds. The location is as advertised, near volcano park but also out in the jungle. Bring food though: the prices and selection in town are not optimal. Overall, it’s easily one of the best plates I’ve ever stayed.
It was a wonderful place to stay and the national park was so close. We sometimes just drove there to see if the volcano was doing something different, just a few mile away. How easy.
The property was in a great quiet and beautiful location. House was perfect. Just wish we could have stayed longer.
Perfectly cozy cottage with all the amnesties in a tropical paradise!
in this lovely rainforest college, you wake to so much birdsong, it’s like being in an aviary. perfect for Volcanoes Park, 2 nice local rests, essy drive to Hilo. Stay here!!
The Lazy Lehua Cottage is a special place in a beautiful and calm neighborhood that is well taken care of. Many little details show that the owners care about their guests and don't just see them as paying customers. We enjoyed it so much that we didn't want to go on day excursions!
Stayed during Christmas break. Great place, very cozy! The gas fire places throw just enough heat for the chilly winter nights. The kids really liked the bunk beds under the stairs, and the jacuzzi tub. The host left bath bombs and snacks for them. I liked drinking coffee in the hammock chairs in the morning.
We had a great and relaxing time.
This place was super comfy and convenient to the National park. We loved staying here and didn't want to leave.
Wonderful, peaceful, place with everything we needed. Loved the coqui frogs and geckos sang us to sleep and singing birds woke us up. Lovely place
Beautiful, private, perfect place to see the east side of the big island . After a day of venturing out, loved returning to the peacefulness and cool breezes of the cottage . Fully stocked kitchen. Comfortable bed. Would love to stay here again in the future.
My husband and I stayed here for a few nights as part of a larger anniversary trip. This house was everything we could have asked for. You can tell the owners love this house and use it often themselves. It’s very well stocked, clean, and well taken care of. The house is in a neighborhood but the thick rainforest gives you a ton of privacy. The whole house is very comfortable and all 3 decks are lovely to hang out and have a cup of coffee or a beer. The location is so convenient to Volcanos National Park, literally 5 min away.
This was one of the most unique and wonderful VRBO accommodations that we have stayed in. We have stayed in this area twice before. This was a very quiet location in the forest area very near Volcano. (The tree frogs do sing at night, but we enjoy them). Kitchen was well stocked, the coffee beans and grinder made great coffee, and we were able to cook fresh fish and Macnut pancakes without driving to a restaurant. The bed was comfortable, and plenty of blankets were provided, as it gets cool at night. The host also notified us that the lava had broken through during second the night. We drove back to the park (another advantage—very short drive to Hawaii Volcanoes Park) that evening, but it had stopped flowing, so there wasn’t a glow. But, since it was such a short drive, it was not a big deal. The jacuzzi tub was wonderful. They have a very large rainfall storage tank, and good hot water heater, so water was plentiful and hot when needed. Even though we are in our 70’s the stairs in the home were not difficult for us. But, a grab bar near the jacuzzi tub would have helped 😜 For those blessed enough to enjoy this property, we recommend: get groceries in Hilo before driving up, and note there is not a washer/dryer in the house. We went into Hilo to a very nice, clean laundromat near downtown, Downtown Laundry Express. Then make sure to try Kula Shave Ice on Mamo Street and pick up fresh fruits and vegetables at the Farmers Market close by. You will not regret staying here!
Loved our stay at L^2C! Outstanding accommodations in a unique environ. ~1 mi to Volcano Natl Park. Only blocks away from Volcano Village.
Very comfortable staying the house. It has lots of extra towels. Very close to the national park. Stacy is very easy to access. She answers our questions quickly.
We had a wonderful stay in the cottage and a wonderful time visiting the park in spite of the rain. The cottage was very nice and well stocked with everything you’ll need.
My two children (ages 10 and 13) and I just spent five nights at Lazy Lehua, and we all loved it! It was a perfect set up for us, and every aspect of our stay exceeded our expectations. This is a lovely property in a magical place - clean, well-maintained, and perfectly located to be an ideal jumping off point for park exploration. Stacey was friendly, responsive, and accommodating. We made many wonderful memories and we all sad to leave. We hope to return one day!
We had visited Volcanoes NP 22 years ago. We decided to make a return visit, ending in Kona. The home was just as described-charming. It was very comfortable and provided a perfect place to relax when the weather became too rainy and windy. And being just minutes from the Park made it very convenient. We could not have picked a better place to stay. Mahalo!
This place is the only place you need to stay in Volcano. We loved the "fireplaces", the kitchen, the upstairs bedroom was just precious. We did not use the jacuzzi tub so we cant speak to that. The rain forest was just that and it was nice to stay in for part of our trip and just listen to the rain. Could have stayed longer
A nice secluded place to stay in the Hawaiian jungle. Has everything you need! I would definitely stay here again. Mahalo for use of the Lazy Lehua Cottage.
Wonderful private location with everything you need for a stay in this more remote area of the Big Island. Comfortable and clean. Would book again.
We were completely charmed by this amazing bungalow. It felt like we were living in a clean, chic treehouse in the jungle! It is beautifully appointed, and the host leaves a few items (and treats) to get us going. The kitchen is fully applianced and everything works as it should. We wish it had been warmer so we could have taken advantage of the front and back porches. The neighborhood is quiet and private, the owner and local contact are super responsive and the location near the Volcanoes National Park is super convenient. In short, we LOVED it!
My family and I stayed here over new years. The property was exactly as presented - it's a clean, charming cottage tucked away in rainforest, with only one other neighbor visible from the property. Every morning we heard a variety of birds and saw a couple of passing pheasants. One the other side of the highway are a few restaurants, small grocery stores and a gas station. The cottage was very well stocked and clean. It worked well for two adults and two small children. As mentioned elsewhere it can be pretty cool but the fireplaces help, and there are thick blankets - it's not hard to get comfortable. It was one of the highlights of our stay on the Big Island.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this charming cabin in the rainforest. It was clean, uniquely decorated & well appointed. Its location was ideal for our excursions to Volcano National Park and Hilo area. Would highly recommend!
