Property Overview
Explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and experience the Aloha of Hawaii Island while staying at this gorgeous, hand crafted home near Volcano Golf Course. Nestled amongst the native Koa and Ohia Lehua Trees with a sweeping view of Mauna Loa and a steady serenade from the numerous native birds, this Hawaiian retreat will envelope you with a complete sense of peace and relaxation. Hale Ka Lehua was designed by owners John & Mindi Clark and personally built by John which shows in every well thought out detail.
The extensive use of glass gives one the feeling of being outside while within the warm comfort of indoors...perhaps snuggled next to the wood burning fireplace.
This 2 bedroom, 1.5 bath retreat has a completely private master bedroom located outside of the main home off of the front lanai. This sweet room has a queen sized bed with a native garden view, 1/2 bath, night stand, reading lights over the bed and a small space heater for extra chilly winter nights.
The main floor bedroom has a queen bed, a small desk and closet and is located across the hall from the full bath (both tub & shower). Our upstairs room is now privatized for the owners use only when we are in Hawaii and not renting out the house.
The kitchen boasts gorgeous 'Flower Garden' granite, gas stove and oven and is completely stocked with Le Creuset cookware, small appliances and wine/cocktail glasses.
French doors spill out from the solid ohia wood floored living & dining room onto the wrap around lanai that has outside dining and gas BBQ grill as well.
We invite you to come enjoy the beauty and quietude of this beautiful home while exploring the amazing dynamics of Kilauea, the world's most active volcano located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The 'Dry side' of Volcano keeps you out out of what can be a constant drizzle & fog that shrouds the eastern flank. The golf course area is located just beyond the crest of 4,000' and dips you into the Kau side of Volcano where the temps will still range from the 40's to the mid 70's but with far more sun! We are 3 miles past the entrance to the park, but you can walk to the edge of the caldera from our home in just 20 minutes...a perfect place to sip a glass of wine while soaking in the view of Halema'uma'u and getting a glimpse of the powers of Madame Pele.
Both the Volcano Golf Course and Volcano Winery are within a few minutes walk from the house.

beautiful, peaceful, and well stocked house. it was a bit chilly in december and loved the cozy fireplace and very well maintained hot tub- both with good instructions..sunday market in volcano was a delightful interaction with locals and delicious inexpensive produce. great communication with host.
The cabin was stunning with it's impressive craftsmanship, whimsical touches. Kitchen well equipped. Everything was spotlessly clean. Designed for relaxing. The neighborhood felt safe and we met many friendly walkers. This far exceeded our expectations.
Great location and beautiful home. We enjoyed our time very much :)
Beautiful home, and was a great place to relax after a long hike. The hot tub was amazing.
This cabin is the best location! 5 mins away from the park. Fortunately, Kīlauea was erupting during our stay. It was a 10-15 min drive to the best viewing area in the park. It was one of most awesome sights we ever saw! The cabin itself was great and had everything we needed. The only downside is it could use a good deep cleaning. Otherwise, we had a great stay!
It was our second time to this property and we love the "homey" cabin feel! Definitely will stay again1
Place Is a dream, seriously, hottub and all the views is incredible. Location next to the national volcano park is incredible.
Nice place to relax while visiting volcano national park
Very cool property on a secluded lot. Well stocked kitchen and comfortable. Great patio and was able to hang out in July with no bugs!Conveniently located less than 45 mins from Hilo and South Island activities like Punalu’u (the best black beach). But of course minutes down the highway from Volcano Natl Park. Only thing missing is a hammock on the patio!Highly recommend.
What a lovely nature retreat! Peace, quiet, birds. Super easy access to pop in and out of Volcano NP. The house is beautiful and the hot tub quite relaxing after a day of adventuring about the island.
Wonderful retreat in Volcano in a gorgeous property with all the amenities!
We loved staying at Volcano House! The property is beautiful and relaxing. It’s close enough to Hilo and ideally located right next to the Volcano national park. On Sunday the 20th we got an alert for Kīlauea episode 29 and quickly went to the lookout. We beat the crowds and watched the eruption, it was awesome. I still can’t believe how lucky we were to see it. I highly recommend staying here, the house is outstanding.
Really enjoyed our time here. The home was amazing. Separate buildings for the 2 bedrooms offered great privacy. Minutes away from Volcanoes National Park. We were lucky enough to see an eruption during our stay.
Hale Ka Lehua was the perfect place for our time exploring Volcanoes National Park. You honestly can't beat the location — just minutes from the park entrance and trails like Kīlauea Iki, which became one of our all-time favorite hikes. Waking up in the shadow of an active volcano was an experience we won’t soon forget. The home has that elusive mix of rustic charm and authentic Hawaiian retreat feel. The blend of indoor comfort with outdoor connection — glass walls, wraparound lanai, native landscaping — created this immersive atmosphere where we felt tucked into nature without sacrificing comfort. The separate master suite off the lanai was a fun and private touch. We used the hot tub to relax after long days of exploring in the peaceful back yard.We stumbled upon a great little breakfast spot nearby called Eagle’s Lighthouse Café — low-key, friendly, and exactly the kind of local gem you hope to find on a trip like this. Highly recommend their breakfast sandwiches and coffee before heading into the park. It’s clear the owners poured a lot of care into building this place, and it made our visit feel extra special. If your goal is to connect with the wild beauty of the Big Island and still come home to a cozy, well-designed retreat, this is the spot. Would absolutely stay here again.
This hale was so beautiful! I love the personal touch of the hosts and their commitment to the environment and natural products! Melinda even went out of her way to let us know what the volcano was erupting and the best place to see it!
Beautiful property and great location to the park. The hosts were wonderful!!
Beautifully crafted home with a peaceful backyard in a convenient neighborhood. We loved being able to walk to great views of the volcano and the park entrance was very close. The hosts’ recommendations and binoculars were much appreciated! Experienced an incredible eruption on Mother’s Day. Mahalo Pele!
Great house, perfect for my family. Super close to the Volcano. Melinda (owner) provided spot on information before and during our stay, with great recommendations and quick responses. I would highly recommend staying here. I only wish we had more time.
The house was beautiful, clean and quiet, and very close to the park entrance. It worked out perfectly for our group of 3. Would definitely stay here again.
We were lucky to arrive just before a big eruption. The house is so close to the park, the sky was bright red from the lava at 4am. House has everything you need for a cozy time in Volcano.
House and Hosts were amazing, we were fortunate enough to be staying while the volcano eruption was occurring. being 5 min to the park was amazing.
This was a great house to serve as a base camp for this side of the island. It was minutes from the national park. The house and yard were a quiet oasis.
Our family had a lovely stay at this wonderful property recently. It is very close to the national park and we were lucky enough to see the volcano erupting. The hosts were responsive, welcoming, and helpful. The house had everything we needed. Very cozy.
We had a wonderful stay at the property while visiting Volcano National Park. The property was beautiful and a perfect location to the park. We were lucky to get to see the volcano erupt during our stay. We appreciated the tips on things to do in the area to help make the most out of your stay
What a great place!! Quiet and peaceful and private. Beautiful place!! We enjoyed our time, we were happy to use the hot tub our first night. The closeness to the National Volcano Park was an asset. Thank you!
Perfect location to visit Volcano National Park!
Paradise in paradise is what we had staying here. The privacy and setting was second to none. The home and grounds are absolutely beautiful and interaction with Melinda was fantastic. I can’t think of one thing that I would change. This place if 5 star all the way and so are the owners. Would love to come back again someday!
We were cold and couldn’t get fire going, had trouble with TV, and it had a moldy smell, which may be typical for that damp area. We also just might be incompetent!
Such a good location, 5 min drive to the park. Nice backyard with a hot tub. Kitchen with all the essentials and more. Great stay!
What a beautiful place! The attention to detail and craftsmanship make this a lovely place to be cozy and warm in. Proximity to the national park made it so easy to get to early hikes and sunset volcano viewings. And the house is very well appointed with everything one might need. Grateful for such a beautiful place to stay!!
We absolutely loved our stay here in Volcano. The house is a 5 minute drive to Volcano National Park. We got to view the eruption and had dinner at the volcano restaurant with beautiful views! Punalu’u, The Black Sands Beach is about a 30 minute drive and has amazing snorkeling with lots of turtles! Highly recommend staying here! Beautiful house! We will definitely return to stay here.
We had a marvelous stay in Volcano, the house is spacious and wonderfully decorated. We loved the kitchen and back patio + private jungle backyard. We were disappointed the Jacuzzi was not working during our stay but Mindi made up for that (and few misses by the cleaning staff) with the gift of some amazing live orchids from her farm, that arrived after we got back home! Highly recommended!!
This was a lovely place to stay near Volcano, HI. Great location near the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the town of Volcano which had some good restaurants. It was clean and was stocked with everything we needed for the time we were there.
Excellent property and host. All communication was clear and we had no problems with the stay. We just wish we could stay longer!
This location was perfect for exploring the national park and the southern end of the island. You can be looking at the Kilauea caldron in less than 10 min from the house! The house is cozy, and beautifully built. We loved sitting out on the back porch and watching the family of pheasants peck around every morning. It was a bit musty smelling, and could use a deep clean but the price is pretty low for the location and all the space you get.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Volcano House! It had all of the essentials we needed for a great time. It is beautifully crafted, and you can really connect with the nature all around. The Volcanoes National Park is very close by, making it easy to visit. We recommend heading over there at night for stargazing as the park open 24/7.
Beautiful home and location.
The good: Good communication with host pre-arrival The host’s suggestions of places to go/eat and see were spot on and very helpful. Directions and entry instructions were spot on, so no issues finding the place and getting in. Property location and proximity to Volcanoes National Park is excellent - it’s a 7min drive to the park entrance. Home and setting is pretty nice, beautiful garden, quiet neighborhood and seems quite private. The not so good: We arrived around 8pm and as we’d taken a 5:30am (CST) flight out of Houston we’d been awake for 24 hours by the time we arrived. Only to find the property had not been cleaned or made up since the last guests had departed. Beds were not made, there was leftover food in the fridge and there was even $100 on the kitchen counter that was obviously intended as a tip for the cleaner. My messages to the host went unanswered until early the next morning, so we found some bedding (not enough) and made up sleeping arrangements as best as we could and used the swim towels for showering. Everything was clean and made up by the time we got home the next night…well kinda - one of the rooms was still not made up, so I slept on an unmade bed both nights were were there and let my adult daughter share a bed with my wife, so she wouldn’t have to. Would I stay there again? I doubt it.
It is a very nice property. Gorgeous cabin with a beautiful view. It is more comfortable for a couple than a family. My family noticed a strong musty smell. We opened the windows immediately. It is very cozy and overall a nice place to stay to take in the beauty of the area.
This was the perfect house for us. We especially loved the separate bedroom for our son to stay in. It was a fully stocked kitchen and a nice grill so we cooked in every night. The hot tub was great too! Mindi and John are wonderful hosts with top notch communication. The location was perfect for exploring the National Park and surrounding areas. The pictures just don't do this place justice, it's way cooler!
We absolutely loved our stay at this property and the owner was incredibly accomodating and kind
Very nice house surrounded by nature.
Cute and comfortable home in a great location for Volcanos National Park. My older child loved that one of the bedrooms was in it's own building, but it might not work out well for families with multiple younger children. A few board games kept us entertained in the evenings but there is also a nice big TV if you like. Hot tub was a great perk in the evenings after some hiking! We loved eating at the restaurant at Volcano House for the view of the caldera (and good food).
Really enjoyed this private cabin in the rain forest. The wood stove (for warmth and ambience) took a little skill to get going but was comforting during the rain storms. The double sized beds were a little small but ok for one person in each.
Great location to visit the national park and enjoy the quiet and peacefulness of this home.
Thank-you again for the wonderful getaway! My husband and I had an amazing time celebrating our 25th!
Beautiful house and setting. But cold the whole time.
This beautiful cabin is located perfectly by Volcanoes National Park and the cute volcanoes village. We loved every aspect of this property: location, quiet, beautiful property. It was so relaxing to come back each day and cook, enjoy a fire and a hot tub soak. One afternoon I sat in the backyard and bird watched. Beautiful kitchen. Comfy beds & furniture. Highly recommend
This place is awesome! The quiet beauty and surroundings are amazing and the proximity to the park is perfect. We had great time hiking all day and returning to hot tub. Recommend Kīlauea lodge for dinner. All the photos do the property justice, it is incredibly beautiful. Would highly recommend.
Beautiful home and property. Great location to the volcano national park, loved our stay, very peaceful.
We enjoyed the beautiful and comfortable interior and the lanai was a delightful bonus. The covered lanai features a table and grill and plenty of room for Qigonh practice. The house is full of light and festooned with orchids. The neighborhood is quiet and walkable. We really enjoyed the wood stove during the slightly cool evenings. The kitchen was well equipped with good quality pots, pans, and knives. The entrance to the national park and some good restaurants, especially the superb Ohelo, are only a couple of miles away. Highly reccomded for those that prefer a more quiet place to stay.
Beautiful! Love the place will return!
Beautiful quiet property really allowed you to feel relaxed and away from everything, while only being 5 minutes from national park. excellent communication from hosts
The pictures of this home do not do it justice. It is an absolutely gorgeous home tucked away in a quiet community. The wood work is fantastic, you can really see the quality and care that has been put in to making this place its own unique location. The layout is great, we loved the large windows on the main room. The outer room is a great addition for a bit of privacy. We were able to sit in the hot tub and watch the glow of Kiluaea over the surrounding forest. Our host was fantastic, letting us know that the volcano had started to erupt, allowing us to see a real once in a lifetime experience.
A wonderful place to stay! Private and close to volcano park. Comfortable and claen!
Since we were planning to visit Volcano National Park, we booked to stay here. It was very close to the park and was very spacious and welcoming and in a lovely mountain setting. It is at 4000 feet elevation so it was cool. The master bedroom is in a separate building which I found isolating. Communication with the owner was good. It is a distance from most other activities in the island. Overall really enjoyed our 4 day stay.
Very well appointed The separate master suite is great
