Opened for guests in 2010, the original HULILI FARM COTTAGE (pronounced who-lee-lee) has welcomed so many wonderful guests that it became time to enable more people to enjoy the farm. Introducing Pineapple Cottage! Please check out our reviews for the original cottage (listing #269536) and our new Treehouse (listing #4108089) to see which cottage best suits your needs.
Guests rave about the 'SWEEPING, UNSPOILED, TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY VIEW' in every direction! The sun and moon rise over the ocean as you watch the wonders unfold from your comfy rocking chair OR swinging bed on the lanai. Birdsong is the beautiful sound track on this private farm located at the end of a dead end country road. Relax as you walk through the orchards and please, sample the when it is best!
The COTTAGE is bright, clean, and newly furnished with all you will need. The master suite offers a KING size 'sleep number' bed with dual controls for firmness. A FULL size futon is inside, and outside on the LANAI is the QUEEN size 'HANGING BED'. (This bed has become a favorite with our guests, who sleep, nap, read and talk while swaying in the breeze, taking in the beauty.) Walk-in shower and pedestal sink in the cottage bath. Laundry facilities, with all supplies, are available for our guests and just steps away from the cottage.
Behind the cottage is our citrus grove, where lemons, limes and oranges can be found in abundance, while the lychee orchard drops off in front of you. There’s almost always a stalk of “apple” bananas hanging on the lanai, and don’t forget the pineapples growing along one side. Bring some groceries and you are ready to settle in.
We encourage you to take the time to read our 160 FIVE STAR REVIEWS for our original listing. They paint a true picture of their stay at Hulili Farm. Here is seclusion, peace and quiet on a tropical farm 'paradise'.
The ultimate guidebook: 'HAWAII, THE BIG ISLAND REVEALED' is in the cottage for your use while exploring.

While most guests come to the farm to get away from their busy lives, for those who still want to maintain some connection, we have recently updated our internet and now offer fiber-internet on the farm. But we won’t tell your boss that!

Have fun!
Our Aloha,
Todd and Madeleine

Idyllic setting, very private cottage, had everything we needed. Host was fabulous and let us wander the farm. Loved the lanai for reading overlooking the ocean in the late afternoons.

Loved the serenity and beauty of the setting, and the guidance on the wonderful fruits on the farm! Communication and welcome from Madeleine was excellent, despite her and her family being away for the duration of our stay. A beautiful spot, well maintained, with lots of thoughtful touches. We loved having breakfast with the geckos, the duck, the dogs and Winston the cat! Only one small suggestion for improvement - a larger/more effective mosquito net for the outdoor bed would be appreciated! Overall a fantastic stay.

We enjoyed the beautiful ocean sunrise sitting on the lanai while watching the birds fly from tree to tree. The sounds of frogs and birds abound in this lush environment. The cottage is well appointed and meets all your needs.

This place was perfect. We slept on the hanging bed every night and it was so peaceful. Waking up naturally to the sunrise was so refreshing and we felt incredibly well rested every morning! This is a must stay place in my opinion.

Where do I start…this magical cottage is amazing! From the personalized welcome sign to the hanging bed on the lanai this place left us feeling relaxed and not wanting to leave. The sound of frogs at night serenaded us to sleep and the bright sun and birds chirping woke us up in the morning. Walking through the lychee orchard was such experience. Lucy & Molly were a great welcome commitment! If you love dogs you will not be disappointed. Madeleine was great at communicating before our stay and during our stay. She even let us know when Kilauea was erupting so we could get there quickly! This gem of a place is off the beaten path and we loved it! If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of tourist this is the place for you! If ever come back we will be staying here again!

My husband and I had the most enjoyable stay at the Huilili Farm. The Pineapple cottage was so comfortable, and had everything we needed. Both the inside bed and the outside hanging bed were super comfy. It took a lot of will power to get out of the hanging bed on the lanai to go sightseeing. We enjoyed visiting Akaka Falls and the town of Honomu and its eateries, as well as the Hakalau trail (if you are concerned about bugs—mosquito repellent was effective). The lychees and stargazing at night were just two of many memorable highlights. Thank you, Todd and Madeleine, for sharing the farm and for the most relaxing getaway ever!

This property strikes a rare balance: reasonably priced, well-located, and thoughtfully maintained without excess or pretense. The views are lush, the space immaculately clean, and the hosts both warm and unobtrusive. Practical touches such as on-site laundry, overhead fans, and a Sleep Number bed (more curiosity than necessity) made for an easy stay. Nighttime breezes kept the temperature comfortable. We had no issues with bugs — just a few charming geckos lingering outside. The only real misstep was the futon, which was all but unusable as seating. As a base for daily excursions, it was ideal. The experience was seamless, understated, and quietly memorable.

The hosts are gracious and very welcoming. If you’re looking for that intimate, indoor outdoor big island experience, this might be the place for you. Very peaceful and an excellent place for meditation or grounding with the Hawaiian lands. Take the time to slow down and really soak it in Mahalo

We were two couples visiting the Big Island for 10 days: 4 nights at Hulili Farms, 6 nights at Mauna Lani condos. At Hulili Farms, one couple stayed in the Pineapple Cottage while the other stayed in the Treehouse. We gathered nightly on the lanai of the cottage for tropical drinks and simple meals. Day trips included Volcano National Park and Hilo. A highlight was the Hawaiian Botanical Garden followed by lunch at nearby Pi’ilani Kitchen. A Pineapple Cottage highlight was the outdoor hanging bed - falling asleep to the sound of frogs, waking to rain and birdsong The hosts, their dogs, the chicken, papaya eating geckos, and Frankie the duck made our time at Hulili Farms a delight!

The Pineapple Cottage was the perfect peaceful spot. Amazing sunrises and a great view. The porch was awesome and the outdoor bed was so nice during both the sunshine and the rain. The hosts were kind and helpful, and they have a couple of friendly dogs you can play with if you're missing your own animals back home. The farm is very pretty and you have free rein to stroll around. We had all the amenities we needed in the bathroom and kitchen, including cookware. We're so pleased we chose to stay here!

What an amazing stay. We appreciated the warm welcome we received when we arrived at the cottage and were pleasantly surprised by the homemade muffins waiting for us on the kitchen table. We had everything we could have needed during our stay and we especially loved relaxing on the hanging bed on the lanai after a day of exploring. The views were amazing and it was so peaceful and relaxing. We would definitely recommend the Pineapple Cottage to anyone!!

Gorgeous property that is so relaxing and close to lots of great things to see. I cannot express how very relaxing it was to stay there. Of your looking for quiet and peaceful this is the place. The cabin was stocked with several condiments and all the dishes you need to cook. The laundry area had detergent and dryer sheet for free to use. The showers have everything you need. The animals are great and there is several fruit trees to pick from. We had a lemon for our chicken, and an orange for breakfast, straight from the tree! It is out of town, so a car is a must, but that was my favorite part! Thanks to the beautiful hosts for sharing their land with strangers!

My wife and I started our honeymoon here (we spent the last couple nights on the Kona side). This was exactly what we hoped it would be: private and peaceful. The property was clean, with modern and quality cooking appliances and a nicely-done bathroom. The weather was mostly wet, but the temperature was perfect. If you’re not afraid of the rain, it’s wonderful to be outside. The lanai is perfect, especially for breakfast. Lots of birds singing during the day. At night you’ll be serenaded by geckos. (The night geckos are quite loud, especially around sunset; be prepared for lots of “waWEEP” noises.) We got to share some breakfast with the day geckos and with the resident duck. You’re off the beaten track and will not be bothered by passersby. Even though it’s on the host’s property, it felt exceptionally private. The only (tiny) downsides were that there was no dishwasher, and laundry was in the shed out back. We managed just fine. If you’re looking for lots of social activities nearby, this probably isn’t your place. But, if you’re looking for privacy and access to rainforest paradise, this is it. Highly recommend the Tropical Botanical Garden (easily worth the $30 if you’re into this sort of thing). Also, it’s a bit of a drive and a hike in through a muddy jungle (2.5 miles each way), but Shipman Beach was exceptional. Extremely private. Swimmable calm lagoon. Sea turtles. Thundering surf on the rocks around the beach. Absolutely wonderful. And it’s free. Enjoy!

This was our second stay at the Pineapple Cottage and it was just as magical as the first. We spent hours lounging on the hanging bed on the lanai and eating fresh fruit and poke bowls. It was just the relaxing stay we needed!

My husband and I so enjoyed our stay in the Pineapple Cottage at Hulili Farm. While the location made sight-seeing around the island easy, we often opted to stay in and enjoy the sound of the rain on the roof and the sway of the hanging bed on the lanai. We hope to come back again soon!

Todd and Madeleine are amazing hosts and were very responsive to any and all questions. There were fresh muffins and fruit when we arrived. The Pineapple cottage was stocked with many essentials in the fridge, pantry, and throughout the kitchen. There was even a charcoal grill with instructions and supplies. The swinging day bed on the lanai looks out onto the most beautiful view and watching the sunrise was amazing. The cottage also had movies, games, and books available. Laundry was available with all supplies needed. They have really thought of everything. The Pineapple cottage is truly a gem and we loved starting our honeymoon trip there. We loved the day geckos who visited us for breakfast on the patio. It is about a 25 minute drive to Hilo, so make sure you buy groceries if you are not trying to eat out for every meal. They will bring you a compost bucket upon request. They even have fruit trees on the property that you are able to pick from. We missed the lychee fruit so I guess we will have to come back one day. Todd and Madeleine, thank you for sharing your incredible farm property with us. We loved everything! Mahalo!

We loved our stay in the Pineapple Cottage! Such a unique place to stay after being in a condo on the Kona side of the Big Island. The hosts we very friendly and offered fruit from their farm. The pictures on the VRBO site match the actual cottage & farm. If you are looking for a quiet, beautiful & out of the city property to stay at, this is the place. It's about 20 minutes from Hilo and an hour from Volacano National Park. I would highly recommend!

We enjoyed out stay at the pineapple cottage. It was clean and had everything we needed for our short stay. The pictures are accurate. We were amused by all the animals and birds on the property. It was very peaceful and private. The view is breathtaking. The property is located only 20 minutes from Hilo. We would definitely rent this cottage again and will highly recommend it to others.

This was by far the most quiet and private vacation rental we have ever stayed. Hosts greeted us upon arrival and were very accessible throughout our stay. Although a little far out for exploring the Hilo side of the Big Island the tradeoff is the solitude and peace. Bed was very comfortable and the muffins delicious. The rental was easy to find and extremely clean. It is a bit on the cozy side and I did miss a proper living room area and surface in bathroom for toiletries and such but made do. For us coffee enthusiasts, a larger coffer maker would be much appreciated. All in all a beautiful stay.

Great hosts, gorgeous property... the cottage is perfectly situated with views of the farm and the ocean sunsets in the distance. Inside, everything you need, excellent linens and comfortable beds. Unfortunately, the weather was a bit damp for sleeping in the lanai; next time perhaps. Definitely the highlight of our trip.
