Rental Details
Property Overview
Spacious house surrounded by anthuriums, lush " old growth" Ohia trees and other exotic ferns, palms and rare plants. 15 minutes from Rainbow Falls and the hospital. 20 minutes to downtown. 30 minutes to the airport and beaches. 40 minutes to the Volcano. Lots of private parking. Quiet, secure with locked outside gate, fresh forest air, pure Hawaiian (County) water. Be serenaded by the calls of the Coqui frogs at night and chirping of birds in the morning. Fast internet. Great for families, remote work groups and retreats.
Steve’s comments:
When we retired we could have moved anywhere in Hawaii. People ask why we chose to live in Hilo and not sunny Kona. For many reasons. The air in Hilo is fresh and humid. Our skin stays moist and rash free. We look and feel younger. The water is pure and tasty, filtered by the lava and delivered by the County. The temperatures are moderate all year round, averaging 75 degrees F. Yes, there is more rain in Hilo, but that creates the lush tropical forest with its abundance of rich oxygen. The anthuriums surrounding the house once planted require no care. The combination of rain, sun and shade make these and many other plants maintenance free. We feel close to nature.
We moved to Hilo for its ideal environment, but we discovered much more. King Kamehameha, who conquered and united the Hawaiian Islands, could have chosen any island on which to live, but preferred the Big Island as his home and headquarters. The Big Island is dotted with cultural sites of temples, villages, and history of those early days. The Big Island is where Captain Cook, the missionaries and sugar plantation immigrants first landed. That history is embedded in the culture of the Big Island.
Then there is the constantly fuming Kilauea volcano in Volcano National Park with it’s many wonderful trails. Mauna Kea is considered the highest mountain in the world, if measured from its base in the deep ocean. It is sometimes covered in snow in winter. Because its clear skies, the mountain is home to some of the greatest telescopes in the world.
Hilo has a small town flavor with its laid back life style and friendly people. Life goes on at a slow pace and makes for a relaxed and stress free experience. After centuries of mixing, there is no dominate race, but a mixture of many racial backgrounds; Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese,Filipino, Korean, Portuguese, and many more. Their common language is also a mixture called pidgin English.
There are sights and sounds that are unique. You will wake to the cheerful rustle of bird song and sleep to the serenade of the mating coqui frogs. Wild chickens and pigs abound.
We have tried to capture these experiences at the Anthurium House and hope you enjoy them, as much as we have over the years.
Your hosts, Steve and Noko.
Aloha!

The home was very nice but the highlight was the beautiful grounds. Beds were comfortable and there were fans in every room because there is no AC or heat. Not an issue in Hilo when the property is upslope. Very temperate year round. Kitchen was well equipped and the host lives in a private residence on the property so if you needed anything they were nearby. Everyday the “property manager”brought us fruit from the many fruit bearing trees on the property.
I never actually stayed there. I'm not sure why or how this owner could rate me. My mother had a life threatening medical emergency and we had to leave immediately to say our goodbyes. When I told the host our situation, he just told me "not to worry about this, and that he understood". What he didn't tell me was that there would be no refund or even a partial refund. I continued to receive automated notifications during the days we were scheduled to be there, which he told me to ignore and that he knew we weren't there. I would have rather him just letting me know up front, so that I wouldn't be surprised later. I'm rating my overall experience as 2 stars. I didn't stay there, so I can't say anything negative about cleanliness or location or anything else. It looks like a nice place, wish we could have stayed there and not had to deal with all we did.
Steve and Akiko has provided best possible service during our 4 days stay at this property. The location was very nice, the info provided by the host was very helpful. Steve and Akiko made sure that we have everything needed to make our stay very comfortable. Both were very easily available for any help. Kids had a great time. We were able to enjoy his backyard patio for morning tea, his garden was very beautiful. All in all it was our best stay and we will certainly come back to stay again.
This stay and house was amazing, as well as the hosts! Clear communication, beautiful property and close to Hilo. We even had one of our party members accidentally leave their water bottle at the house and they notified us immediately, so we were able to have family in Hilo pick it up for us.We would definitely stay again, Mahalo!
I brought my hula haumana from Texas to the Big Island for an educational trip. I am originally from O'ahu, but even as a child, the Big Island was a special place to me. After this trip, and staying in the beautiful anthurium home, it's even more special of a place. Steve, Noko, and Akikio were wonderful and attentive hosts. The home is absolutely stunning, we did not want for anything. The communication prior to arrival was excellent and we enjoyed sharing our journey with them. Will absolutely stay here again the next time I'm in Hilo!!!
My husband and his coworkers enjoyed their stay in this beautiful home. Steve was a wonderful host. They were quick to respond to messages/questions we had. The location is perfect. A hidden gem away from busier town area, yet still close enough to town for convenience. We would definitely choose them again for future trips to Hilo. Highly recommended.
We absolutely loved our stay at the Anthurium house. Noko and Akiko were very responsive to all our questions and needs. The BBQ was out of order when we arrived and they had a brand new one for us the next day. The house is beautiful and had everything we needed for a wonderful stay. The best part was their friendly dog Sky we got to play with! Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Lovely all around
This is a great place. I personally tend to not rent places where the owner is nearby. In this case, the owner and caretaker live just up the driveway and around a bend...but aside from being greeted and shown around by the caretaker we never saw the owners, aside from a gracious invitation to a presentation in Hilo toward the end of our visit that we were unable to attend. The other thing that might put renters off is the 20 minute drive to downtown Hilo. In fact it is a beautiful and uncrowded drive, unlike other drives from outlying areas into Hilo. The property is spacious, immaculate and beautiful, surrounded by tropical plants and giant ferns. I would return to this property at any time and hope to do so. Thank you, owners, for a great rental
Beautiful property and home in rural Hilo area. It’s a bit out of the way, but the drive is beautiful and the kids enjoyed themselves.
The Anthurium House was well furnished. The dishes, cups, glasses, dinnerware, and cookware were sufficient. The bedrooms, towels, and shampoo and body wash were sufficient. Our visit was relaxing and the pace was slow, easy and chill. Hilo Town was less than a 30-minute drive away. The property has many ferns and anthuriums. We enjoyed our stay at the Anthurium House.
