This is our third stay on Molokai and the second time in this condo. Molokai is a great place to just chill out. Great walking paths and beautiful views.
I believe we have rented from Dana and Rich many years ago and have not had a problem. However, this time around, their cleaners failed to clean the unit after the last people stayed. There was mildew in the tub and dishes out in the counter and bed in disarray. Needless to say, the unit was not suitable to stay. (Luckily we had friends staying in the area.) Since Molokai reception is spotty it took a day to communicate with Dana and another day for her to get a cleaner to clean the unit. (We were only there for 3 days). She notified us that the unit was cleaned; then we could not enter the unit due to the door being locked. She then blamed us for being “locked out” and refused to refund even part of our stay. It’s unfortunate that she would treat anyone in this manner and feel it was ok to have guest stay in an uncleared unit.

After an 8 year hiatus, we returned to Molokai to visit friends. While we can sympathize with owners and their headaches of owning a property battered by wind and salt spray, (we owned two neighboring condos and have rented other units in this area) we were shocked to find this unit in such disrepair and dismayed that we had not taken the reviews more seriously. First of all, the condo had not been cleaned from the previous renters when we arrived at check-in which set the tone for our two week stay. You want to believe that the housekeeper actually spends more than just an hour or two cleaning up after the last occupants, but clearly she does not because we had to wait until she did. (We were reimbursed $100 for our inconvenience.) There are dusty cases of bamboo flooring under the bed (per Dana's 2015 comment when it was installed); 12yo magazines; a non-functioning smoke detector; used stuff in the medicine cabinet & frig; and a useless, outdated information book. And can we discuss those infamous lanai doors that have needed repair since 2018? (per Stuart's comment) Or the broken louvre handles, the chipped paint... We expect a high degree of hospitality when we travel such as good quality kitchen equipment, up-to-date entertainment systems and plenty of good linens, not to mention a clean and well maintained unit. And to call someone every time something breaks just isn't our style. Unfortunately we will not rent this unit again, even though it has a good view.
As others have said, this may not be the place for everyone. It is not fancy and there are some things which could stand repair, but it was well equipped and comfortable. We visited in February so I cannot comment on how hot it could be in summer but it is well ventilated. The loft area is a bit tight, so we kept our luggage downstairs. The bed was comfortable. The view is beautiful, was perfect for me working remotely. We loved the lack of crowds, seeing only a handful of people on both the beach in front and three mile beach just down the road. I will say the documentation provided both through VRBO and the binder on site could stand updating - some of the travel/sightseeing information is outdated and there were three different sets of instructions for connecting to wifi, it was a struggle to find the current info. However Dana was prompt in getting back to me when I messaged her for the current wifi password. Thank you, we enjoyed our stay :)
We really enjoyed staying at Dana’s place on Molokai! The views from the condo were amazing and the sound of the ocean at night led to excellent sleeps. The pool is close by as is the beach. It is a quiet complex great for a low key get away, far from the crowds of Maui and the other more developed islands. We will be back!
The view makes the place. The building had not been cleaned properly in some time. The sliding door failed during the week leading to mosquitoes that attacked my wife with a vengeance. Fortunately they didn’t like me. Fix the door and clean up the place and you’ve got yourself a true gem!
The reality of this place is it's a gem, but in a state of disrepair. Nothing can compare to the spectacular view of ocean waves breaking on volcanic beach just 50 yards away, and the sound of it pounding in the night. Incredible. But the place is weathering away--so much is rusting, the screens have holes, window louvers don't open anymore, and a film of red dust is pervasive, blown by wind and weather. If you can deal with OK clean, unusable worn Teflon pans, a sink that drips, a rusting electrical panel, and the feeling of accumulated salt spray on everything, it's just fine.
A nice property although out of the way. As the description says, it is on a resort that used to be a golf course. Room itself is very nice, close enough to the beach that you could hear the waves from bed.
