Returned to Hanalei Plantation for our third stay and it did not disappoint! Brought two first timers to the island and they were awed by the ocean and mountain views and the unique layout of the house. Very clean and property manager was responsive to our every need. Love the location. We plan to return!
We had a lovely, relaxing stay in Princeville (our third stay on the North Shore).
Pros:
- Beautiful, well-maintained pools that are the perfect temperature
- Walking distance to a great food spot and a quiet, nearly secluded beach.
- Well maintained home that’s equipped with most everything you need for a comfortable stay
- Scenic views from many of the windows
Cons:
- Neighboring houses are very close. We had several nights with very loud vacation renters next door that kept us up at night with their voices and music. Princeville security helped somewhat, but it wasn’t ideal
- Communication from the management company could have been improved.
- Not necessarily a con, but we’ve never had as many geckos in our Princeville vacation rentals as we had here. Our child loved the nightly friends we found on our beds, but some may not.
- Upstairs bedroom needs better privacy. We felt very exposed with sheer curtains in the bedroom and bathroom. When the loud neighbors had their lights on all night, that’s what we could see from our bed. If you’re sensitive to light at night, it quickly becomes a problem.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay but would likely look for a more secluded home next time.

Hanalei Plantation is one of the most charming, beautiful homes on Kauai’s scenic North Shore. Having previously owned a vacation rental home and checked out many rentals in this desirable area, Hanalei Plantation rates very high on our short list. This was our second stay and we will definitely be back! The home has 2 spacious master suites with amazing ocean and Mountain View’s from both. There is also a third bedroom with twin trundles and half bath, perfect for children or singles. The pool and heated spa area also have gorgeous ocean and mountain views and are lovely for photo opportunities. Gourmet Kitchen is very well stocked. Home has beautiful architecture and unique features throughout. Owners have also stocked beach supplies for your convenience. Although we did not use the recently added heated lap pool, it’s a nice touch for swimmers and children. Kahea from Hawaii Life and her management team are superb. Very responsive pre-booking and during our stay. Home was impeccably clean. And did I mention the location? So beautiful and convenient to the famous town of Hanalei and Princeville where there is a full service grocery store. Kauai’s North Shore is by far the most scenic but there is plenty to see around the island and a short drive anywhere you want to go.
The photos of this home are accurate. The place was spotless when we arrived. The location is just what we wanted, a quiet residential neighborhood with an ocean view, not far from the amenities. My friend stayed with me for the first half and my sister for the second half. My only issue was with the property manager. I was told by Hawaii Life to reach out to him. He did not respond to my first text. The second text involved a broken window shade chain. I received a response to that. The third request involved outside lights that would not turn off. His response was to ask if I had tried the on/off switch. I have been practicing law for over 35 years. My sister is a board certified internist. We know how to turn a switch on and off. This issue was never resolved, so we threw a towel over the outside light. The final text involved the t.v. set in the living room not working on the last night of our stay. the property manager would not come out to check it out. There was no manual for the t.v. set, which would have been helpful. This time he asked us if the t.v. was plugged in! He then indicated that he would have to buy a new one. I told him that I didn't feel that a new t.v. set was needed. We finally got the t.v. to work on the last night, but we could not get it to go to the Netflix channel. We gave up. For this very expensive price point per night, we expected far better service. Other than this unfortunate experience with this one individual, our stay was fantastic.
Not that private, lacks air conditioning. As I type this I can hear the neighbors toilet flush. You keep the windows open because no air conditioning and you are woken either by the close neighbors or the chickens. Two blinds didn’t work upon arrival and the property manager made no attempt to fix. There is also rebar sticking up about 2 inches above the ground right outside the pool. My boy stepped on it twice. The second pool, the lap pool is nice but upon arrival it says to keep the pool vacuum in the whole time. It was always in the way when my kids were playing. The pathways around the property are crushed shells and are the worst to walk on, it’s hard to make it from the out of the pool area with the auto opener because of the bad walking surface, your kids will hate it.
This property has been the best place we stayed in the Princeville region so far. The layout of the home was perfect and the location was excellent. We enjoyed the views from the jacuzzi/spa. I would definitely want to come back here if possible.

This was our first time in Kauai and we picked this house for the location. It was an incredible place. The views are amazing. The house was very clean and well equiped. The managing company communicated well and we are very satisfied. We will defintely return on our next visit.
