Starting Monday, July 17, 2023 the work on the new wastewater plant will begin at Hono Kai. It is expected to be completed by September 11, 2023. Work will be performed between Mondays and Fridays from 8am to 5pm every week until completed. During this time, the east parking lot (Ocean side) needs to be vacated during the day from the Monkey Pod tree down to Building #1.

Hono Kai is located at Ma'alaea Bay, near many attractions, shops and restaurants. Walk to Maui Ocean Center (Aquarium), take a sunset sail or whale watching tour from the nearby harbor, play miniature golf and more at Maui Golf & Sports Park, or shop at the Maui Harbor Shops. Ma'alaea is located in central Maui, bringing you closer to many excursions such as Hana or Haleakala. There is an on-site coin operated laundry room. There are no resort or parking fees. Pros: Steps from the sea wall for great whale watching from the small lanai. Friendly community of guests mingle at the convenient grilling area. Located near the aquarium and several restaurants, or an easy drive to Kehei. Comfortable bed with lots of pillows (but we could have used an extra blanket or comforter). Beach chairs, cooler and beach towels appreciated . Kitchen seemed well stocked, but we didn’t cook so can’t really comment on the cookware or appliances. Unit was clean.
Cons: As others have noted, the unit is near the small pool and area where guests lounge. We could hear loud conversations from sunbathers and kids screaming in the pool. Beach not easily accessible for everyone. The tv/cable was a bit challenging.
Overall, this was a good value and we would recommend if you’re looking for a place away from the crowds.

Toilet clogged and overflowed, air conditioner was inadequate, pool freezing.
Nice ocean view and beach.
Very small unit, right next to pool.
Relatively well stocked kitchen.

Maalaea is a small harbour and self catering apartments centre. It’s well away from the crowds and commercial centres. Our unit the best positioned as on ground floor with the ocean edge no more than 10 paces in front. Unobstructed view of the water and a nice sheltered patio to gaze out to watch for whales breaching. Take binoculars with you. Not much choice in local restaurants. Need a car to get around.
Main centres for shops 15-25 mins drive away depending on which direction. But Maalaea is central positioned for exploring in all directions so great base for exploring Maui. Is a 3 storey building and only 4 X 3 apartments look seawards. Definitely want this view. Access to the beach is direct in front and then can walk for several miles if you wish. Almost all the other condo blocks do not have direct access to the beach as the sea comes right up to a rocky wall. These visitors would have to walk a long way up the road to access the beach. From our unit you are on the beach in under a minute!

This was a great low key location if your looking to avoid all the busy and loud tourist traps, but close enough you can visit them.
The condo was nice, looked to be recently modernized and clean. The property has a small pool, the sandy beach start right in front and goes all the way to Kihei. Each morning and evening we say watching the ocean and sky (and light from Kihei. I did a little snorkeling right in front when calm, the kids did some body boarding when there was waves. Saw turtles out front often. For my family we were walking distance to the harbor for a snorkeling trip and a dinner cruise. Also Luxe Latte was an awesome little coffee shop we visited daily.
This was the first place we stayed (3 in this trip), but I wish it was the last location as it was so calm and would have been a great way to slow down and enjoy Maui before heading home

We stayed on A level and had a sliding door right onto a small grass lawn with lounge chairs. Wave noise was so loud we had to close the windows at night!! That’s how close we were to the water. Centrally located. This property is on the dry side so if you are looking for tropical smells and showers try the other side of the island.
