Property Description
"Pathway of the Gods" is the meaning of the name given by ancient Hawaiians to Kealakekua Bay. Five hundred feet from the bay, nestled among the palm trees and fragrant plumeria blossoms is the site of your next vacation. Let us "Big Isle" you!
Hale Hanai is a family-friendly two-story vacation rental home which will give you a taste of old Hawaii, away from the crowds, with a large private yard abounding in fragrant flowers, bananas, and coconuts. 'Hanai' is a word Hawaiians use to designate adopted family. While staying in our home, you are our adopted family.
Upstairs, Mom and Dad can relax and enjoy their own private living room with views of the bay. The Alii (royalty) room is furnished with a California King bamboo canopy bed, a seating area, and a lanai from which to view some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. There is a fully-equipped kitchen and a dining room with a table that seats eight, as well as a china hutch with dishes for that special meal.
Downstairs, there is a separate living room, and room to enjoy a snack. The Sandcastle Sanctuary has a queen-size bed and a built-in daybed, perfect to accommodate Grandma and Grandpa or a married child and spouse. The built-in daybed is wonderful for a younger child, and it also makes a great place to sit and enjoy a book while the ocean breezes rustle the curtains and wash your cares away. There is even a portable crib ready for a napping baby, if needed. The Volcano Room sports a double bed and the decor has been heavily influenced by Madame Pele, the goddess of fire. The Shark Tank Den has a twin-bed, with aquatic decor that is very kid friendly. Two queen-size sleeper sofas (one upstairs, one down) round out the sleeping arrangements.
Across the bay is the historic Captain Cook monument that marks the place where the famous explorer met his untimely end. Spinner Dolphins visit the bay almost daily, and there is unparalleled snorkeling in this marine sanctuary. After a day of sightseeing or kayaking in the bay, the outdoor shower will wash away the sand along with your cares. The barbeque awaits, as you dine outdoors on the two picnic table as the sun sets on another perfect day in paradise.
Please note that we have a two-week minimum policy for bookings during the Christmas holidays, from December 15 to January 1.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Captain Cook. The house is comfortable and clean, with great toys for kids! The beach park access walking distance from the house was really nice.

We stayed at Hale - Hanai with my husband, children, parents, mother in law and daughter's boyfriend. The house was spacious and clean. It was very convenient to have access to a washer and dryer.

We were a group staying together and attending a Zen retreat in Captain Cook. The location was perfect, a short drive to our retreat and a very short walk to the ocean. Susan was wonderful and very responsive to our needs. We had a beautiful time here. Mahalo

We were a group of nine people, three generations (grandparents, parents, kids), from two different states. This venue allowed us comfortable sleeping quarters for all and other living space for board games, movies, dining, and plotting out our next trip to beautiful near-by beaches. Our host provided us with a small pool for the 3-year-old and toys and books galore. In short: great place, great location, great support. Mahalo!

Lots of beach accessories for us to use (snorkels, noodles, plenty of towels) and walking distance to the water. Full sized washer/dryer were very useful. We really enjoyed our meals outside on the back patio; there are mosquito tikki torches but you may want to bring mosquito repellent as well. Susan was very sweet. Beware that a neighbor's rooster will most likely wake you up at 5am every day and there are a lot of cushions/pillows/carpets/rugs everywhere which could affect allergy-prone individuals.

Hale Hanai was delightful. The property is surrounded by greenery and tropical flowers for privacy, and yet with so many windows to allow in the light, the property is both serenely private and light and bright. We were three generations of family ranging in age from 5 to 78 and Hale Hanai was perfect for all of us. It is squeaky clean, with all modern conveniences, and a wonderful, traditional Hawaiian Plantation style feel with beamed natural wood ceilings and many other natural wood accents. Susan even provided a lovely Hawaiian Christmas Tree decorated with many colorful Hawaiian leis. The hosts were both gracious and thoughtful of our needs. We had a delightful stay.

We stayed for 10 days, celebrating a family birthday with siblings and our adult kids. The two living rooms (upstairs & downstairs) made it more comfortable having a large gropu.
The house was clean, ready, and well-equipped with tons of beach towels and kitchen supplies. Susan was really responsive and helpful, too.
The house is well-located for a drive to Volcanoes NP. The house is about 17 miles south of Kailua-Kona, and at the bottom of a 4.5 mi hill below the highway. This was fine for us as we didn't want to be in the more crowded areas and weren't going out to eat., etc. We loved the short walk to Manini Beach for frequent snorkeling and it's a short drive to 2-Step Beach and Honaunau Bay for more fabulous snorkeling. We used Ehu & Kai Adventures to rent kayaks twice for kayaking and snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay. That made 3 outstanding snorkeling areas within easy reach of the house.
This was our first trip to the islands in October and we were surprised at how warm it was. The house had fans in every room, but it was still quite toasty, cooling off finally in early morning.

We live on the Big Island but on the East side so, when looking for a place to stay we needed it in the Kealakekua Bay area. This was perfect for us, it was large enough for all and special treat for us, it was almost next door to our granddaughter and her family. The wedding venue was at a Equestrian Center very close. There is a park and of course the bay within walking distance. All in all it was a great place.

We loved this VRBO! The surroundings are beautiful. Short walk to Captain Cook Cove for fantastic snorkeling and other great activities. Our kids loved exploring for geckos and other wildlife. The house had everything we needed and was very spacious, which was important for our big family. It was a great place to come home to for rest and relaxation after a day of Hawaii adventures. We had several online interactions with the host and in all of which she was extremely prompt in responding, very helpful, and kind. Thank you for helping make our first Hawaii experience a great one!

Property was very clean. It's up in the hills on a windy road about 15-20 minutes out of town. We liked that it was a bit out of the way but in a nice way. We walked 10-15 minutes a came to a little well known snorkeling spot. It's a private property that allows access. I has a nice outside patio next to beautiful plants. Overall, a very nice place.👍

Our family’s stay at Hale Hanai consisted of three generations - grandparents, adult children, and two grandchildren. There was plenty of room for everyone in the two-level home set in a tropical setting very close to Kealakekula Bay.
Everyone enjoyed the stay there. Our host, Susan, was very accommodating and easy to communicate with.

The property was amazing! Both the house and yard were so inviting. Loved the gorgeous landscape and how close we were to the water. The host was wonderful. She knew this was a surprise Christmas gift for our kids and set up a darling Christmas tree inside the home.
