great location close to the beach.
I spent 3 hours of my vacation trying to get internet access working. VRBO staff and onsite property mgrs. we’re of no help
The problem was never resolved
We were disappointed by the broken shower head, the clunky door, the exposed outlet behind the bed and the beginning of mold growing just inside the patio door. Also, not every unit has a breathtaking clear ocean view. We had an excellent view of the parking lot with just a little of the ocean in the distance. The trash chute was also broken during our stay so we had to trek our garbage around the building while hunting for the dumpster. Still, the location was perfect, Maui was lovely, and the owner of our unit and all the staff were friendly and welcoming.
The location is ideal in central Kihei. The building and surrounds are well maintained. The office staff were welcoming and helpful.
This unit could be improved by replacing the sheets which are polyester and uncomfortable to sleep on( cotton would be lovely) The pillows are perspiration stained and should be replaced The towels are a grey-beige color. I wonder what they were when new? The mat in the bath has black mould on it as has the inner shower curtain. There is no cutting board, colander or tea towels in the kitchen, otherwise it is well equipped. The glass sliding doors to the lanai are very difficult to slide as are the screen doors which have tears in them. Both need new runners installed. A few hundred dollars spent on the unit would bring it up to scratch. I hope the owner does this soon.
This property was an ideal home away from home for our time on Maui. The apartment is spacious, clean, and open. Access to a dishwasher is key, as is laundry (a necessity on a long vacation). Double wide patio/balcony space allows for lazy mornings reading in the sun and breezy nights with the curtains swaying to the Maui air. Comfortable bedding, great shower pressure, and a lovely vanity. Great location right off the beach, and it seemed like the building was smack in the middle of everything we wanted to do on the island.
And here's the kicker -
We had thought we booked this location for 6 nights, but due to our error, we only booked it five. So on the day we were due to check out at ten am, we received a call from the owner early in the afternoon notifying us of our error and their need to get us the heck out of there for guests coming later that day. Shocking as this was to us (idiots), and inconveniencing as it was for everyone else, the situation was only exacerbated by the fact that we got the news while we were in Hana (which happens to be at LEAST two hours from everywhere on the island due to a winding mountain road that goes on for miles and miles.
Needless to say, we were quite embarrassed and panicked, and we immediately turned around to head back and clear out. We were in touch with the owner the whole time, and instead of ripping us a new one (which would have been understandable), he was patient as we remedied the situation as quickly as we could. What we thought could have been a disaster wasn't thanks to the understanding of the owner. On top of that, he even offered to ask around other friends with rentals if they had anything available to put us up if need be (remember we thought we were staying until the next day). Such an offer was a unexpected courtesy given our mishandling of the dates, and though we ended up staying with friends, that gesture stood out.
Often times great deals and prices are just that, but here you get a killer spot for an affordable price, with piece of mind knowing that you're renting from someone with integrity and empathy - rare finds in the world.

This was our 20th trip to Maui, and the first time we have stayed in this unit. We were a little disappointed with the condition of the unit, so I contacted the owner with our concerns, he took care of the issues quickly, the unit now has new cookware, silverware, a new blender, and two cullanders for draining pasta. I recommend a couple more improvements such as ceiling fans, and the owner will be looking at the possibility of installing these. The unit was clean, bed comfortable, and plenty of towels. Very nice wide screen tv with basic cable, WiFi was wonderful no problems connecting. I would have liked a table on the lanai so t that we could have eaten lunch/dinner out there. There was two beach towels, and one beach chair, would have been nice to have had two. There was pictures on the walls which made for a homey atmosphere. I do have to say t that I was impressed how fast the owner responded to my concerns. I would stay here again knowing that he would respond.
We didnt want to make a reservation in a
resort because we were going to be exploring the island all day. The price of this apartment is very reasonable. It has a master bedroom and a bed sofa in the living room, one bathroom, kitchen and dining table. Matresses were comfortable, clean bed sheets and towels are provided. Furniture is not brand new but it is very decent and in good shape. No carpet in the apartment which I think makes a place easier to clean. (carpets retain lots of germs unless you wash them with hot steam) toilet paper, dish soap for one or two days is provided, there is a new large tv in the living room with lots of channels. Apartment has Free Wifi with good signal.
The owner answered all my questions by email before our arrival and we made arragements for late check in with no problem. Laundry room is almost infront of the apartment door and the machines need quaters but the front desk can change your bills for quaters. The beach is two minutes walk and water was very calm. The pool has also a paddling pool perfect for our toddlers and pools were clean. There are also grills available in the green areas. Apartment has one designated parking spot. From the main airport to there it took us a 20 minute drive :) mahalo
We use a rental for sleeping, breakfast and hot tub/pool. The Kauhale Makai foot the bill. The accommodations were comfortable and clean. The bed was comfy too. A perfect location for going north or south and close (a few miles) to Molokini departures too. We do like to enjoy eats/drinks on the lanai so the sliding doors were a bit troublesome (new rollers?) and the building construct does not allow for a total unobstructed view of the ocean.

For the price this was a very good place to stay. The single thing that was a problem was the sliding glass doors to the lanai were noisy and hard to open and close. Otherwise, the location was good and the accommodations were also good. My daughter said the the recliner and the pull out sofa bed were both excellent. As noted communication with the owner was easy, and the owner is flexible about changes.
I spent two weeks in this condo. I have stayed at Kauhale Makai many times & find the parking lot side to be much quieter than the interior rooms facing the courtyard. The courtyard is noisy as the sound just bounces off the two buildings. People swimming, cooking on the bbq, etc. do not realize how the noise travels to all the condos and spoils the enjoyment of sitting out on the lanai. The MINIMAL amount of cars starting up should not disturb anyone on the parking lot side & most people are very courteous to be as quiet as possible.
The owner is very helpful and always responds to messages.
The condo carpeting is not the best & I must agree with other comments it needs replacing or tile put in for ease of cleaning with a nice area rug in front of the sofa. I doubt cleaning will do the job....someone has stained the carpet and it is a shame people do not take care other's property when renting.
The kitchen has a lot of pots/pans, dishes, silverware, cutting knives, blender, ricer, toaster, coffee pot. It would help to have a strainer for pasta and some casserole dishes along with a few storage containers for leftovers. I like to cook and occasionally go out to eat. I have lived on the island & now visit a number of times a year ...so I plan on returning to this condo.
A new internet system was installed prior to my visit & is excellent....no problems whatsoever.
There are two plumeria trees right outside the lanai & I personally enjoyed the "privacy" on the lanai. You could see the ocean just fine. I agree if you want a better view, go up one floor to floor #3 if that's your thing to do.....where the view is not blocked that much.....but if you enjoy privacy, & not having people look up at you like many other lanai's on the property, this is it! I'd like to see a little table on the lanai than just 2 chairs so you can sit out and drink your coffee in the mornings or have a nice lunch/dinner.
The shower was awesome, bed wonderful and minimal ocean supplies. Condo is close to the elevator for carrying groceries from car. The condo has white walls throughout & would be nice with some warm colors on the walls, but duable as is. The interior atrium to enter condo is nice & quiet.
The central air is wonderful to have versus a window unit, one of the main reasons I stay at Kauhale Makai.
All in all I will stay in this condo again on my next visit if available. Aloha and Mahalo to Michael.
