Beautiful condo right on the ocean.
Beautiful condo right on the ocean.
We absolutely loved our stay at the Mauna Kea Residence unit C25 and will definitely come again. Perfect location, lawn to kick around a ball with the kids and the best beach on the island steps away. This splurge vacation was definitely worth it, but will keep in mind the following that we wished we had known beforehand or at least at checkin.
1 - the beds were so hard our backs and hips started to ache after the first couple of days. After we expressed our dismay, the concierge was great and actually drove to Kona to get foam toppers for the beds. Better, but I definitely expected the beds in a luxury condo to feel luxurious.
2 - no security lockbox. We felt safe enough but it would have been nice to have a place to put laptops and jewelry.
3 - no toaster. We toasted bread in the oven. Again, not a dealbreaker but would have been nice.
4 - probably the most important thing that we didn’t find out until our last night was that you can ask maintenance to turn off the blaring alarm that goes off if you don’t close the sliding glass doors in 7 seconds, I understand this is a security feature for small kids, but we love falling asleep to the sound of the surf. We were not informed of this safety feature at checkin so me and the kids found out the hard way covering our ears as the alarm was blaring and I’m trying to hear what the concierge is saying over the phone. The day before we checked out, I saw other units with their sliding doors open, and it was only then that I called concierge and they said they don’t inform people at checkin for security reasons. So just know, if you like to hear the sound of the waves and feel the ocean breeze as you’re relaxing in your unit, you need to ask them to turn off the security feature.
These sound like big grievances, but they are very small compared to the magical time our family had, and as I said, we can’t wait to come back again! Aloha!

Property is beautiful. But... the vacation and experience marred by construction noise. Building immediately next door is under construction. I would NOT have booked this unit had the description been accurate. The owner should have noted that there was possibility or likelihood of LOUD construction noise. Sitting on that gorgeous lanai was not an option when the saws, drills, and nail guns were going. Very definitely NOT worth the $2600/night we paid.
