Amazing house, garden is outstanding! Manager Michael was awesome! We had a great time with my family. Thank you!
The entire experience was as expected and better. The photos do not do the property justice — though they accurately represent how amazing it is — and Michael is a fantastic connecting and caretaker of the property. I hope we can return year and year.
Wow what an amazing place! I could have spent weeks admiring all the plants and trees and still found new beauty. Everything is so thoughtfully put together. Beds were comfortable, kitchen had everything we needed and inside and out everything was super clean. Michael was so kind to show us around the property as well.
Wanted to explored a new part of the Big Island near the volcano. It’s an hour drive to VNP. Stunning property although I wasn’t sure how much of it I could roam on. There are other homes on the property and I didn’t want to trespass. The house we had was very private though. Very very rainy part of the island. I wanted to sit outside more but everything was so wet. Noisy coqui frogs at night but along with the rain I was lulled to sleep. Michael was great to work with. A unique experience but pretty far away from everything. It’s truly a one of a kind property!
I have never been anywhere like this place! It is truly and island paradise like you’ve only seen in movies or in your dreams. The owner and caretaker have meticulously designed this home to be a living work of art. The botanical gardens are breathtaking and the home is full of a collection from all over the world (including a gong held by two soldiers begging to be rung as the sun rises over the ocean in the distance as you sip your morning coffee). We stayed for a short 2 nights while visiting Volcano National Park and wished we had stayed at least another night. Pahoa is just 10 minutes away with a number of places to grab breakfast or dinner alongside locals and off the beaten tourist path. You will not regret staying here. Thank you so much to David and Michael for sharing this special home and your work of art with others!
Amazing! We were in awe of the grounds and the house! We enjoyed the nature and peaceful oasis. The gentle rain even brought peaceful sleep and a cool breeze.
Beautiful 'off the grid' property. Wish we could have stayed longer. Enjoyed learning about the vegetation from Michael.
The pictures don't do it justice! We had an amazing 3-night stay with our family of 4 (2 teenagers- 13 and 16). Beautiful, relaxing house and property. Never once turned on the TV. Kitchen is well-stocked for cooking. No AC (of course), but plenty of fans for use in the bedrooms if you are a hot sleeper. I enjoyed listening to the frogs at night. The soaker tub (cold plunge/hot tub) was a nice perk.Great information provided in advance - and tips for things to do in the area. We explored the new black sand beach created after the 2018 eruption.Make sure to take time to ask for a tour of the property and try some of the edible fruits.Wish we could have stayed a week!
We had a great time. The home and the property were awesome. Everything was as advertised. We would definitely come back!
Our family of 5 stayed for 3 nights as we explored the Hilo side of the Big Island. The home and property were spectacular. The photos, while amazing, cannot do justice to how beautiful the property truly is; it is like staying in a secluded botanic garden. The home itself is amazing as well; it was very clean, spacious, and very well stocked with everything we needed. Very much appreciated the grill and the amazing gas (propane) range for cooking meals. Michael was extremely helpful with everything; he was very courteous and very responsive. Very, very highly recommended place for anyone looking for a secluded retreat in a natural, verdant, and lush Hawaiian setting!
Always a wonderful time. Thank you!
Pictures can not do this place justice. We felt so lucky to be able to stay at such an incredible property. Check-in was easy. The groundskeeper, Michael, was there to greet us and answer any questions. The house itself is really unique and special. However- the garden that surrounds you is absolutely breathtaking. If you are thinking about it, do it! I would absolutely stay here again.
From the minute we drove onto the property until we left we loved the place. it is so beautiful. Mike was extremely helpful. I have never seen such a variety of plants, flowers, trees, etc. Everything was perfect.
Quiet, ocean view off in the distance, amazing sunrises. It's a massive garden. Big enough to have a run through for a few laps. With edibles and flowers, the design took vision and tons of work. The house itself is great. We had a few unlucky power issues, but the house manager was so responsive, polite and pleasant it didn't bother us much. We are already scheming to come back here.
My family and I spent a wonderful week at Hale Muhalo. The property is even more beautiful in person and the house was clean, modern and extremely comfortable for a family of five. Michael is a wonderful host and the care he and his team put into the place really shows. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to anyone who is looking for peace and tranquility on their trip to the Big Island.
A gorgeous and unique property and home. We feel lucky to have had the opportunity to experience it.
Best garden environment ever, especially it was awesome taking a bath under lots of stars at night.
All amenity is good and towels were clean, also.
Everything was perfect.
Thank you for giving us the chance to stay!
Where to start. The pictures of this property do not do it justice. This beautiful cottage is right in the middle of the most breath taking botancial garden you will ever find on a map. You have the entire 21 acres to ah at. A different view out of every room that all walk out to a amazing deck area. We never really wanted to leave the property but when we did we found amazing black sand beach near by and some really cool hot pots. The house was spotless and everything works they way you would hope. Night time it has just enough outdoor lighting to entertain with . I cant wait to stay again.
The property and house are absolutely gorgeous! The level of detail is unbelievable. This is a 10 star property. Even more beautiful then the pictures. Every room has a stunning view and you can see the ocean from the deck. We will definitely be back next year ! If you are thinking of booking this property, BOOK IT! You will not be disappointed . Also Great communication from property manager .
This place is amazing. I hope I am lucky enough to stay here again someday. Thank you for sharing your wonderful space with us.
The property was gorgeous, remote, and very relaxing. Michael was wonderful and gave us a tour of the grounds. I highly recommend staying here for a calm getaway
The overall feel of the property is magical.
We stayed mid Feb 2024. Girl trip! There were 5 of us. We had an absolutely amazing time. Vacation coffee on the lanai was the best! Distant ocean view from lanai was stunning @ sunrise! The grounds are immaculately maintained & so lush. The birds and wildlife welcomed you each morning. Location was central and easy to get to all the sites around Hilo. The home was very comfortable. Beds comfy. House well equipped with anything you would need. One thing I would say is bring the deck cushions under the eaves in the evening so they aren’t wet when you want to sit out in the morning. It is rainforest and were wet every day. It was a bit challenging to find the house in pitch darkness at 11pm our 1st night. Michael was welcoming & timely with communication. Wish we made time to take advantage of his tour of the property. I hope to stay again in the future.
This has got to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. Before we arrived we were planning on exploring around Pahōa and Hilo, the moment we arrived we knew we had to change our plans and just stay at the property. It was perfect, Michael was great and gave us a tour of the grounds. Fresh fruit everywhere! Beautiful sunrise. It was so relaxing, we really want to come back!

Beautiful gardens. Loved all the orchids. Icemaker in the refrigerator worked great! Loved the fresh citrus waiting for us upon arrival
The house is literally situated in the middle of a botanical garden. If you want a peaceful getaway from the typical Hawaii tourism, this is it. The property isn’t too far away from other towns but seems remote, is quiet. We saw Hawaiian hawks, heard coqui frogs and were joined by curious day geckos.
Beautiful and peaceful. Great location to explore the tropical side of the Big Island. If you don’t mind the sound of nature to put you to sleep at night, then this is the perfect place. Completely eco-friendly with solar everything. Has water filter system for clean water to drink and cook with. Beds were comfortable with plenty of clean towels. On site washing machine/dryer for convenience. Stella, the cat, is a resident cat who’s super friendly and highlight for the kids.
If you want to reconnect with nature, then this place is the perfect place. Make sure to bring bug-spray/repellent for the mosquitos.
