~ Aloha! ~
E Komo Mai (Welcome) to the Sun Cottage! Immerse yourself in a lush rainforest full of native birds, tropical flowers, and trees taller than most buildings. This is a peaceful, quiet retreat designed for the ultimate Big Island escape.

~ The Space ~

The unique Sun Cottage comfortably accommodates up to four guests. Inside, you'll find a spacious and cozy layout featuring a large dining and family room, a fully equipped kitchen with a gas stove and oven, and a large bathroom with a beautiful vanity and a classic clawfoot tub. The home includes a main bedroom with a comfortable Queen bed, a dresser, and a Smart TV, as well as a fun upstairs loft bedroom with two single beds and dual closets. Step outside to enjoy the fully covered front porch, a covered garage space, and a private outdoor shower for a beautiful nature immersion!

~ Location & Climate ~

Community-maintained private paved roads make for an easy and scenic drive to the property. The cottage sits at an ideal elevation of 1,500 feet, keeping daily temperatures comfortably between 65°F and 85°F. Because this is a true rainforest experience, the area receives beautiful daily rainfall that keeps the jungle vibrant. We provide ceiling fans for warmer days and a space heater for those wonderfully chilly, cozy evenings.

~ Important Notes for Your Eco-Stay ~

Eco-Living — To respect our beautiful island resources, we kindly ask that guests be mindful of electricity and water usage. Please turn off lights and electronics when leaving the cottage for the day.

Water — Like many homes on the Big Island, we run on a sustainable catchment water system. The hot water heater is on-demand and takes a minute to heat up. For your convenience, we provide a large Brita pitcher in the fridge (filtered twice from the kitchen sink) along with a premium reverse osmosis water jug equipped with an electric pump. Please note that water from the bathroom sink, shower, and bathtub is non-potable.

Plumbing — This is extremely important for our local infrastructure! The property utilizes a cesspool system. Please DO NOT flush anything down the toilet except human waste. This includes toilet paper, wipes, and food scraps. A bidet attachment is provided for your comfort, and bathroom trash cans as well as a freezer compost bin are available for all other waste.

Stove Use — The gas stove runs on propane and will auto-lite, though a lighter is provided on the shelf above the stove just in case.

~ Privacy & Neighbors ~

I live on the property to the left of the main driveway, though my home is not visible from the Sun Cottage to ensure your complete privacy. There is a second unique structure located across from the cottage beyond the banyan trees; it sits completely separate and is private. Please reach out with any questions at all!

~ Guest Access ~

The front gate will be left open for your arrival, and the cottage is fully accessible via a secure keypad lock. Your unique door code will be sent to you within 24 hours of check-in. You are welcome to explore the beautiful grounds around the cottage and the main driveway from the gate. Please note that the driveway leading to my personal home and the area around the second building are private.

~ Other Things to Note ~

Because the Sun Cottage is nestled deep in a vibrant rainforest, the climate can be humid and musty at times. We have designed the home with many screened, openable windows and fans throughout the house to maximize fresh airflow. Being immersed in nature means you will hear the beautiful sounds of the jungle, including nighttime coqui frogs when it is warm and wet, and you may encounter local insects outside. Bug spray and an electric bug swatter are provided for your comfort. Please reach out with any questions or concerns—we look forward to hosting your adventure! Mahalo!
