Rental Details
Property Overview
Hale Ma‘ukele is a large, well decorated home located near the heart of Volcano Village and 1 mile from Volcano National Park. It has 2.5 baths, 3 bedrooms, 4 beds, a large living area, and a 4 person hot tub. We have a fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, hot tub, a nice back yard, and a back deck with a gas grill. The house is set in the native forest with giant Hapu‘u ferns, ‘o‘hia trees, and native birds all around.
My wife and I moved here in 2006 with our kids, designed and built this house with other family. For the nest year we worked on the landscaping, and decorated it with local art and photography. The house has its own solar energy and filtered, drinkable catchment water.
The house has a open floor plan downstairs and lots of windows to look out on the rainforest. It is a good layout for large groups or families as it facilitates connection, but also has private feeling bedrooms upstairs that have some separation from each other. The master bedroom has its own bathroom, and there is another full bathroom upstairs for the other two bedrooms. We have a laundry room with a washer and dryer, a smart TV with high speed wifi.
The back deck gets sun and is a great place to drink coffee, eat, relax and grill. The hot tub is set in a private corner of the property in the rainforest and is a great place to unwind after a day of activity at Volcanoes National Park or somewhere else.
We are a 5 minute drive to Volcanoes National Park and a 2 minute drive to Volcano Village. Volcano is a cute little town with a few restaurants, general stores, a community center, playground, and a nice farmers market on Sundays.
Volcano is at 3500 feet in a high elevation tropical rainforest, so it is never too hot. It can be chilly and damp depending on the weather, so it is nice to have the mini split heater.

Great location and beautiful home!
Great home & lots of space for our group! Worked great since we were so close to the volcano the morning it erupted!!
This place was very nice. Made you feel like you were living in a rain forest.
Great setting.
Hot tub was great!
Very lovely home!
Our two families were very comfortable for a quick stay near the Volcano National Park. Towels for the hot tub were a nice surprise.
Beautiful home with very comfortable beds. The location to the park is perfect.
The house was very clean and well maintained! Just thrilled with how nice it was! Adam was a great host and very responsive! We hope to come back and visit again soon!
Everything was fantastic. The house itself is very spacious and cozy. The hot tub area was the most magical part of the property surrounded by trees and fern. My only concern was the stock of household items like trash bags, dish soap, towels. Etc. and there was some wet pots in the drawers/coffee grounds still in the coffee machine. But for the most part everything was very clean and tidy. The neighborhood also feels very safe and check in was very easy with the door code. Thank you again for hosting.
Great location… just a short ride to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (5 minutes). Beautiful house in an ohia fern forest setting with an outdoor hot tub which was fun for the kids. Kitchen was nicely stocked and the Macnut chocolates and coffee provided was a nice touch! Would definitely rent again! It was a nice relaxing getaway with the family.
This place was awesome. Beautiful setting, clean and cool house. Would recommend this place to any family staying in Volcano.
This was a great place to stay to explore Volcanoes National Park. The house was extremely clean and comfortable. The hot tub was fantastic after a day of hiking in the park! Highly recommend!
Beautiful house near Volcanoes NP. It was perfect for our family of 7. Highly recommend.
If you want a nice place to stay close to Volcanoes NP, this is an easy choice. We were about 5 minutes from the front gates which was amazing during the eruption event that took place while we were there. The house was spacious and in a very quiet neighborhood.
This was a lovely home that served as our base for one night during a brief visit to Volcano National Park. The rooms were comfortable and we enjoyed falling asleep to the sounds of frogs and other chirping critters at night. It was an easy drive to the entrance of the National Park.
Lovely home, clean and comfortable
Loved this place!
We loved this property! So relaxing nestled in the rain forest! House was beautiful and one of the cleanest we’ve seen. Very well taken care of. We loved the hot tub nestled in the trees. This place is only 10 mins from volcano viewing which was so convenient. A few restaurants and a store close by. We loved the farmers market on Saturday.
We had a wonderful visit at this lovely, welcoming home!
Loved the property, hot tub, and location! Everything was as listed and super easy. Would highly recommend!
The home is spacious. We enjoyed the backyard with covered deck and covered hot tub. It rained a lot during our stay, so it was nice to still be able to enjoy outside. It is close to Volcanos Nat’l Park and not too far from Hilo
The outside of the property looked beautiful, but the interior was disappointing! The pictures do not match what the inside of the house currently looks like. The inside was tired and unclean. There were hairs in the bed sheets, some of the bed sheets were ripped, dust was covering the furniture, the interior smelled musty, and most importantly the upstairs toilets did not flush making the bathrooms smell gross. We contacted the property manager about this problem. We could see that he read the text, but he never responded.
We loved our stay in volcano and the unit was perfect for our family of 5
Wonderful home for our vacation. Spacious rooms… the hot tub was amazing. We were lucky enough to have the volcano erupt when we were staying here -location to volcano. National Park can’t be beat.Highly recommend!!!
A review is only as good as if I am candid. We brought our whole family here to experience the Volcano area. This was our second time staying here. The first time was in 2016. We had a great time, but I will say that the place felt a little tired. The elements of Volcano are hard on the houses, I am sure. We only used the hot tub once. We washed some bedding before use due to it feeling not clean. The host assured me it was, but my eyes said different. My suggestion would be to update the bedding and towels as they are very worn. Also, the sofa could use a good cleaning. The bones of the house are simply beautiful. It just needs a bit of love. Overall, it was a nice start to our vacation. Make sure you bring everything you need food wise with you. I would recommend this house to rent for sure. I am sure the host wants it top notch!.
This beautiful home is tastefully decorated and equipped with everything. It is so relaxing to sit on the patio listening to the song birds in the tropical garden. It is very convenient for visiting Volcano Park.
Beautiful house and location, highly recommend!
Great location close to the village and national park, with lush and lovely landscaping and classic Volcano Ohia and fern forest all around. The home itself is very spacious and comfortable, with huge windows all around to enjoy the cool morning (or evening) air and birdsong. The kitchen has everything we needed and the hidden hot tub was certainly a favorite. Comfy beds! Some minor appliance issues but owner Adam was responsive, communicated well and gave prompt assistance. We would certainly stay again!
The house is in a super quiet and private neighborhood very close to Volcano village and the Volcano National park (but too far to walk to them). Jungle all around it, you can only see a little bit of one other place. The home is very environmentally friendly, it’s got solar electricity and uses processed rain water for the water supply. The kitchen, dining, living areas and covered porch and half bath are all on the main floor. Three bedrooms and two full baths are upstairs (one bath is in the master bedroom, the other is in the hall). Heating was via a single central mini split unit so we had to leave doors open to ensure the furthest rooms got warmed up (Volcano can get a bit chilly at night). It was clean and the owner was responsive to messages. But it was a bit under equipped compared to similar places we’ve stayed and some things needed replacing; sheets in both beds we used had holes and tears, there’s only a dustpan and brush but no broom or vacuum, and a couple other minor things of that nature. But overall we had a great stay, had lots of space, and it’s a good location.
Gorgeous property and fantastic location at the volcano erupted whilst staying here
We had a great stay, easy access to Volcano Nat’l Park. Hot tub was relaxing, great grill! Thanks for letting us visit!
Mahalo nui loa for a great staycation!
Our family enjoyed our stay in this cozy home in Volcano!
This was the perfect place to stay to maximize our visit to the park. The house was spacious and clean. The box of chocolates was a welcome touch! We would absolutely recommend this place to anyone planning a trip to Volcanoes.
I'm hard-pressed to think of anything negative about this property. We were in town for the Hawaii Bird Conservation Marathon, which started at the Volcano golf course, so we needed a place nearby. This VRBO was only a couple miles from the start line, so a great location. The village of Volcano is very small, but we found a good restaurant and a general store next door with a surprisingly great drink selection. As other reviewers have noted, the house is somewhat near others but you get a total sense of seclusion when staying here since it is tucked in among the trees. We only heard other people twice in three days. The house itself is beautiful, with hardwood floors and nice updated kitchen and baths. There's a great TV in case you want to watch television in paradise. The furnishings and bedding are comfortable. Everyone loved the hot tub in the backyard! There's plenty of space in the house, with two full baths and a half-bath, three bedrooms, a formal dining room, and a nice deck. It's rain forest, but I saw fewer bugs than I see in my own house in the US Midwest. It's a water-catchment system, but totally potable, plus fine for showering and washing clothes. Even if I didn't need a place near the start of the marathon, I would still stay at this location, as it was beautiful. Bigger and better than the place where we stayed in Kona, for less money. Check-in was extremely easy. No need for conversations with the host. A perfect stay!
The home and property are just beautiful. The hot tub was a dream to use and welcome at the end of a long day hiking in the park. The house comes with all the amenities a family needs. It’s very spacious and the kitchen is well appointed! The property made our stay a real treat!
We loved this space! The location cannot be beat and the layout of this house was great! We loved being close to the tiny town and also the national park. The house was as described and we really loved the layout. Recommend!
Very nice property - very close to Volcano (the town) and the Park. Only downside was noisy neighbors (for one night) in the house to the southwest.
Love this place!
There were no screens on the windows (and no ac); therefore we could not open the windows due to insects, so it was too warm at night to sleep. The master suite was nice, but the other bedrooms were insufficiently furnished (barely a bedside table and nowhere to put clothes) The washing machine had mold, so we didn't use it. One bathroom had blue tape all around the window and was jerry-rigged with a piece of wood (and did not open) There were insufficient towels (very much so). There were far fewer utensils, pots, etc than I am accustomed to in other VRBO. It was filthy under the living room couch cushion. Kind of annoying to see a lot of signs about "don't do this or that" when in fact the place was inadequate.
Great stay in a great location! Everything was as shown and it was very peaceful! The singing frogs were a wonderful bonus😊
Convenient and beautiful home! The house is only 2 miles from Volcanoes Park entrance, which made for a short trip to the rental after spending a long day at the park. We love the community. Each house is secluded within trees & ferns, like you're in your own private jungle. We were on Maui for a week, and walking into this home was the first time I heard my 13 & 15 yr old grandkids say WOW. The house was beautiful. We loved the hand-crafted support posts, the floors, the back deck, the vaulted ceilings, and that it had 3 bedrooms was perfect for our family of 4 adults & 2 kids. The bed and pilllows were comfy. The master BR has a private bathroom. The other 2 bedrooms shared a hall bath ( all upstairs). The couch was comfy, for the short time we were there. I can find nothing negative to say. The owner was quick to respond to emails, and helpful at providing info on local recommendations. We ate at Lava Rock Cafe for dinner and it was excellent ( burger and fries were about $20-$23/pp). Would DEF stay again if we come back!
Beautiful, private jungle-like property in a semi-arid location. All necessities supplied as advertised.
The house was perfect. Located super close to the park. Jacuzzi was nice to have in the back area at night was lit up nicely. Plenty of space for the family to relax inside the house and on the back patio. Definitely staying here again in the near future.
Beautiful home close to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Very clean, lots of space. We enjoyed our stay.
Beautiful home with the perfect location for a visit to Volcanoes National Park. Unfortunately we had an issue checking in because the Vrbo website and app were down and so we were unable to access the check-in codes. While that is not the Host's fault, we tried to reach him via Vrbo messaging and phone (call and text) and he was not available (we were checking in at 5pm local time). Luckily we were able to reach Vrbo customer service and after several lengthy calls with them, they were able to assist with entry into the home. However, this was disappointing, as the Host should be available around the check-in time to assist with any issues.
The home is beautifully designed and furnished, well-appointed and very comfortable for 3 couples. A soak in the hot tub surrounded by rainforest, birdsong and the trill of frogs is magical. The house is a 5-minute drive from the National Park, and an even shorter drive (or walk) to the heart of Volcano Village.
Very clean and well stocked home. Great hot tub in the rainforest.
We absolutely loved our stay here! Clean and beautiful with nice amenities, we wished we could have stayed here longer! Hot tubbing at night with the lights and the frog song was magical. And it was nice to be so close to Hawai’i Volcanoed National Park. We loved it and would highly recommend a stay here!
We loved the open floor plan and all of the space at the house. The kitchen was big enough for five of us to work in at once! We enjoyed the hot tub, even during the rain. The location is excellent. It was easy to find, which isn't always the case in Volcano. It's very close to the park. We have already recommended it to friends and would definitely stay again.
The property was clean and as stated. I only wish the lights to the hot tub were not on most of the night as the light shown into one bedroom
We loved our stay at this beautiful, spacious home. We hiked in Volcano National Park all day and came back to a quiet place to stay with a lovely hot tub...perfect for our sore muscles. The location is super close to the park and nearby to the delicious dinner we enjoyed at Kilauea Lodge.
Excellent property, well furnished, clean, tasteful, great location. We would definitely choose it again.
Very nice place, well maintained and as advertised. Just a couple of miles from the park entrance and far enough off of the main road to enjoy the quiet of the forest.
This was an amazing house that was well stocked with amenities (in the kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms). The hot tub in the rainforest was an amazing retreat after exploring Volcano NP (and has a little canopy so is enjoyable when rainy too). The wood inside is amazing. The communication with the owners and maintenance/housekeeping staff was excellent. We highly recommend this rental house and would definitely go back!
This was a perfect place to stay on our visit to the Big Island and visiting the National Park. It was very clean and the host gave us some helpful tips for dinner and exploring the area. Our only disappointment is that our stay wasn't longer.
We had a great stay. The house was perfect for our family. Would highly recommend.
This house is very nice and was perfect for our 2 night stay. It has a beautiful wood staircase and an awesome covered deck. We really appreciated the quiet neighborhood and close proximity to the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Definitely recommend this house to anyone visiting Volcano.
This home was incredible, super clean and had beautiful unique touches. The inside was very comfortable and cozy, and outside was amazing too. It was nice to relax in the hot tub, which felt like a tropical magic hideaway in the backyard, and the back deck was another nice place to relax.
