Property Overview
Location is everything!
The Birdcage is a breezy and bright studio giving you clear views of the Koolau Mountains. With historic Waikiki Beach just outside the hotel lobby, the Birdcage is the perfect home base for exploring Honolulu and the rest of Oahu.
Double paned sliding glass windows greatly minimize the urban sounds of Waikiki, but let a lot of light in. An expansive roof deck on top of the hotel provides a bird's eye view of Diamond Head. There are lounge chairs for sunbathing and tables for alfresco dining. No one else in Waikiki has a better view of the sun setting into the Pacific. Kapiolani Park is just across the street and offers the Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, the Royal Hawaiian Bandstand, tennis courts, soccer fields, archery ranges, weekend art shows and the city's Sunset on the Beach free concerts and movies - all this in its 500 green acres.
One of the main reasons for coming to Hawaii is of course the sun and sand. Surfing, stand up board paddling, outrigger canoeing, swimming and simply lounging on the beach are all just a few steps from the Birdcage.
Hawaii is the crossroads of the Pacific and its culinary offerings reflect that abundantly, so while the Birdcage has a kitchen and microwave, you are a short walk away from countless cafes and restaurants catering to every taste and price range. Similarly, if you can get yourself out of the water and away from the beach there is a lot of shopping to be done in Waikiki, and the many other shopping venues just a short drive away.
The Birdcage is at the end of Waikiki. Kapahulu Avenue provides easy access to the freeway, and makes getting in and out of the area very easy because you avoid all the traffic in the heart of Waikiki. This is perfect for when you decide to explore the rest that Oahu has to offer.

Great place!
Great directions on check-in, clear communication. Lots of great suggestions for things to do. The location was great! Had a great stay!
Host was very welcoming and responsive to inquiries. On site manager very prompt and friendly as well. Great location to shops and beach. Comfortable bed and space.
Clean room. Excellent host. Beautiful views.
The location was great! The apartment was spacious and well-appointed. I would definitely stay here again in the future!
Host provided great communication in the lead up to the visit. Property manager response was great. Appliances in kitchenette all worked good for our early morning breakfasts up on the 10th floor patio. A/C kept the room at an acceptable temperature (for a couple of penguins from the Pacific Northwest that were navigating the heat).Great location right across the street from the Honolulu Zoo was great for both arrival from airport by bus (W-Line got us there and back) as well as bus tours that we had scheduled with pickup right across the street (and of course the beach and parks which are very much walking distance). Plenty of great food options in the immediate area whether you want higher end on the beach dining or want to try some excellent local fare up Kapahulu (Sunshine & Pineapple) or Monsarrat (Pioneer Saloon).
This is a very clean unit on the 6th floor of a hotel inclusive of a kitchen that is very nice & well stocked but a bit quirky. The AC is an adequate room unit however, the windows do open which enhances sleeping. The windows have shears which cover the open windows and at the level nothing flies in. Parking is a separate issue but can be on the premises for additional cost. The swimming pool badly needs replastering. A major positive outside of excellent communication with the host and the hotel front desk is that the unit while having no ocean nor beach view is a 2 minute walk from the east end of Waikiki and it is child friendly. A negative issue is that the excessive noise from 6 a.m. trash pickups from the hotel and surrounding hotels makes sleeping in very difficult.
Great location, just a block from the beach! Our room was clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the unique character of the hotel and the amenities that were close by.
This property is located at the east end of Waikiki beach by the zoo. We like the area but do lots of walking going west down the strip. We like the walk. This apartment is located at the back of the building and doesn’t have a deck. But, big windows which we opened up and enjoyed the tropical breeze.
Loved our stay at the Birdcage. It was clean, welcoming and great location. Though we never met Kevin in person, he is a super host. From day one he kindly and quickly answered any questions and met all our requests. The Birdcage made the trip!!! Mahalo!!!
I stayed here for three days with my husband before moving on to another spot on the island. The Birdcage was a great way to start out our vacation. The unit was as described. It was clean and comfortable. Kevin was great and he graciously allowed us an early and easy check in. The beach is literally steps away as well as great coffee and places to shop and dine.
Location is excellent! Very easy and convenient, close to the beach and next to a big park. The rooftop view is fantastic. The host was very easy to communicate with and responded quickly when I couldn’t find the entry instructions. Both the management and host were very helpful. Thank you Kevin and Jeannie! The studio is smaller than I had expected, but the kitchen had all the necessities. It is like a hotel room that has been converted to a studio. We tried sleeping with the windows open but there was a lot of early noise from construction next door. The AC worked well but left a puddle on floor, where a towel was placed to handle it. In general we had a nice stay and enjoyed our time in Waikiki!
Close to beach, zoo and Diamondhead. Easy access to many restaurants.
Great! Would come back again!
We had a great time staying at the Birdcage. The apartment was the right amount of space for us. It was very clean and a great location near the beach and other Waikiki attractions.
Very nice stay, so pleased! Perfect rental for a single or couple! Way better than a 300/night hotel room, easy access and reasonable cost secure parking. Nice amenities in the unit and I cannot say enough about location! Waikiki beach is a block away, grocery store down the street, restaurants galore within walking distance. Felt very safe and secure. Most Hawaii properties are older and this one is no exception but well maintained and excellent host. Would stay again for sure!
It was overall an easy process to even check in. The hotel management was even wonderful the host worked with me and my plane delays and such. Amazing would definitely recommend I’ll be coming back for sure!!
Kevin was a great host and helped answer a lot of my questions about the location. The unit is perfectly located a few minutes from the beach. We ate at multiples places within walking distance from the condo. Would definitely stay here again.
Apt was a good size and close to the beach. Steps away. Our visit got cut short from roaches inside the apt. We relocated to the resort. Host was nice and provided us back a refund. Also trash chute is in well. You can hear everyone throwing trash down chute. All in all I wouldn’t go back.
We had a great time and our room was great
Kevin was great to deal with. Checking in was smooth. The room is a little tight but very nice and close to all you need.
Spent a nice few days in Waikiki in this well- located property, across from the zoo... and the beach. Our only "complaint" was the TV was difficult to figure out, and a bit small for its location across the room from the bed. We are approaching 70 with poor eyesight and hearing, a bigger TV, or more comfirtable seating closer to tv would have been great. been nice. Othe the early 60s.
Good location , can walk most places
Good
We loved being at the south end of Waikiki Beach's hotel row, especially the rooftop view of the zoo and parks across the street. Easy walking distance to everything. Thanks again!
Great place! Across the street from the beach and zoo. Watched the sun rise over diamond which was very cool.
Very nice.
Loved our stay! It was close to the beach and very quiet for such a lively location. The perfect holiday getaway spot
My husband and I very much enjoyed our stay. Kevin and the staff at the hotel were friendly and accomodating. The beach was just a few steps from our door, the scenary was beautiful, and the community was warm and inviting. So thankful we had this experience in such a wonderful place together!
A wonderful experience from the beginning to end
Kevin Lum is probably the best property owner I have encountered. He goes the extra mile and responds with speed to any communication. Our refrigerator wasn't working very well and when we told him that, it was replaced that day with a brand new one! Everything we needed was in the apartment and we loved the location. Will definitely stay here again.
The Birdcage is a great place to stay. The location is excellent, the hotel had nice amenities, and staff were very nice. Highly recommend!
The Birdcage was exactly what we needed for our trip to Honolulu. Location at the end of Waikiki close to the zoo was convenient to get in and out of and to be able to walk down Waikiki without being surrounded by the crowds. The kitchenette meant we could save money by cooking or bringing food back to the condo while taking advantage of the use of the 10th floor sky deck to eat meals with a full view of Diamondhead and the beach. Paying for parking at the Waikiki Grand made it very convenient to come and go at our leisure. Altogether an excellent trip!
Great location. Clean. We had everything we needed.
It was a great fit for us. We found the rate fit our budget, the cleanliness was exceptional, the location just right, and the communication with management was exceptional. We would recommend it to others.
The Birdcage was a wonderful location for us with all the amenities we needed. It was convenient to have a rental car with paid parking located right under us at the Castle Waikiki Grand Hotel. Of course, the Castle isn't really a hotel any longer but kind of operates like one. The condos are owned privately. However, in addition to the VRBO owner and the local property manager in Honolulu available by text, there is someone at the front desk most hours to help answer questions and provide minimal check-in/check-out for the room and parking. Note: Parking is run by a separate entity, not the condo owners. Kevin, the Birdcage owner and host, and his property manager were speedy responding to questions and gave us extra tips for travel and detailed instructions for the condo. The beach is only a block away. The views from the 10th floor patio are gorgeous and we took advantage of some relaxation time up there. As for travel to other parts of the island, we found it easy to get to the highway to go west, central or east. Most days we used our car for early morning/afternoon excursions and then did a lot of walking afternoons and evenings. The on-site pool isn't fancy but clean and you can basically have it to yourself. As for the room temperature, we sometimes used the window A/C and sometimes used the nice window cross-breeze. I used earplugs to minimize city and A/C noise for sleeping and it was fine. Laundry was $2 a wash/dry. Easy peasy. Definitely recommend!
The Birdcage is very conveniently located across from the zoo and the beach. The property had all the convenient amenities for a comfortable stay.
excellent location, launching point to tour the island and stay near the beach.
Was not told about the onsite construction ahead of time, but overall I would stay again.
The property gave us all the basic needs of a good stay...the property mananger was very responsive to any requests prior to our visit. The property was located within easy access to many local sights and activities; making our ability to walk pretty much everywhere - beautiful views from the top floor deck area - wonderfully friendly people at the front desk; always helpful. I'd say the only negatives would be cleanliness and wear and tear on a nice little space could be improved; updated. Overall; we certainly enjoyed ourselves.
The birdcage was excellent for our 2 week stay, definitely one of the best locations in Waikiki.
Stayed here 5 years ago.Condo needs updating(new TV ,more pots ,pans, dishes)
The Birdcage is a perfect little place to stay when you’re in Honolulu. The apartment had everything you’ll need for your stay. Close proximity to everything on Waikiki.
Before we arrived Kevin was very responsive to any questions. Once we arrived Jeannie was just as responsive on our couple of questions. The location was ideal for us - easy walk to everything including beach, buses, town. The condo had everything we needed and was very quiet. We didn’t need the A/C as we had a beautiful breeze with the windows open.
Nice place! Great views from the rooftop! Beautiful sunsets!
Convenience and easy to access to beach, and shopping
Great location for the beach. Easy to get in condo with code. This is small but exactly as pictures show. Condo was clean & pleasant. Had everything we needed for two people that didn’t plan to spend much time in it.was nice having the beach towels & chairs provided! Bed was comfortable. Kitchen ok. Oh yes, the microwave only works if kitchen light switch is on! Bathroom is ok. This condo was fine for what we needed. You can pay $25/day to park in their building but be sure to call the property and make arrangements ahead because it’s very limited parking under ground and tight spaces. We had a very good experience there. It’s a very convenient location. Glad we chose this condo.
The drain in the bathroom sink is plugged. I used drain cleaner and let it sit overnight twice but it needs a snake or a plumber.
Location, price, value, and room cleanliness and comfort. Could add a full length mirror outside of bathroom, also a few more wash cloths. Otherwise, perfect!
The property is right at the end of the shops and across the street from the Zoo. The double bed is comfortable and it was nice having a little kitchenette. We only had 2 bath towels and it took several texts/days to have someone bring us more which was super frustrating! The towels, kitchen ones included all smelled musty. We bought our own toilet paper because the room provided this single ply paper. Also, parking is limited $17/day on a first come first serve basis. We were lucky to get a spot! Overall we had a nice trip to Waikiki!
