Property Overview

VOLCANO VILLAGE SERENITY SUITE
We do not accept bookings from anyone who has not been vaccinated and had booster shots, with the exception of small children. We appreciate your honesty about this as it is very important to us. Thank you for being vaccinated in this critical time. Mahalo!
And, DO KNOW this is truly a "Big Island". If you are flying directly into the Kona airport it is 90+ miles from Volcano so try to arrive early into Kona. Let us know so we can advise you on the best route to take. The Hilo Airport is 30 easy miles from Volcano.
Your private entrance leads to our sweet and cozy Serenity Suite in the heart of quiet Volcano Village. FREE breakfast the first morning. Guests say this is the coziest place they have ever stayed, it truly is!!
Our property is on one half acre of land that we have been gardening and landscaping in a native forest for 40 years. You will find quiet and privacy here.
Guests are awed by this piece of paradise and are treated like family.
Relax in either of 2 hammocks, one under the native Lehua Ohia trees and Hapu'u ferns and the other on your private covered porch.
We have added a gas grill and grilling tools to Serenity Suite for our guests use.
This is vacation rental is NOT located in a subdivision, as many vacation rentals in Volcano are. We are in the heart of the "Village" on a charming and quiet road, just minutes from the park and Volcano Village dinning.
Relax and restore as you listen to soothing native bird songs (note: there are no noisy coqui frogs in this part of the village, which are very loud critters)
There is a cozy gas fireplace, Sally's extensive lending library and 2 beds in this 2 room suite with covered porch. over 700 sf. Second bed is a double and suitable for a third guest or for 2 children. Not suitable for comfort for 2 adults.
We think this vacation rental is ideal for 2 adults or a family. It is not always ideal for 4 adults as there is one queen bed and one double bed, so if you are especially tall or large the double bed might be too small for you. We want everyone to be most comfortable while staying in Volcano Village Serenity Suite!
Extra single futon available, if needed.
We have comfy "hapi" coats for you to wear and soft fuzzy socks if needed. You will be "happy" here!
A generous locally sourced breakfast is provided on the first morning in your suite. (Note vegetarian but not vegan) It will all be in the fridge when you arrive. Our water is excellent, so don't buy any bottled water.
Wonderful freshly ground coffee, tea assortments, local juice, hot chocolate and popcorn are provided.
We are extremely close to ALL that you need: 3 minutes to the nearby stores and restaurants and 5 minutes to the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Our sweet neighborhood is also a joy to stroll in, so bring your walking shoes.
You will love this place!
We also are LEGAL and registered with the State of Hawaii, as a legitimate vacation rental. Sadly, many are not.
Come, meet, Sally & Jeffrey Mermel.
Sally is celebrating her 54th year in Hawaii and Jeffrey is a former Volcano National Park naturalist. We love Volcano and have lived in this home for 45 years. Sally's garden was recently featured on a garden tour by The Volcano Foundation.
The youngest island in the archipelago, 'Hawaii's Big Island' was believed to be the first island Polynesian voyagers set foot on 1,500 years ago. Today, the 'Big Island' remains a vital touchstone for Hawaiian culture, the birthplace of Hawaii's greatest King, Kamehameha I, also the home of Pele, goddess of fire, and Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. Mark Twain called this island 'the peacefullest, restfullest, balmiest, dreamiest haven of refuge for a worn and weary spirit the surface of the earth can offer'.

Gracious hosts. Comfortable accommodations with everything we needed right there. Location in a fern forest is simply lovely. Enjoyed seeing quite a number of different flowers and birds. Our hosts were so charming. They had excellent advice on the local area and the volcano national park.

We loved our stay here at this hidden gem! The location is so beautiful, surrounded by the plants and flowers of the rainforest and so quiet and peaceful. It is so close to Volcano National Park which was perfect as we made several trips to the park. Jeffrey and Sally were the best hosts. Jeffrey gave us great advice on hikes and the best spots to watch the volcano erupt. It was very clean and well equipped and we especially appreciated the binoculars that were there so we could see Episode 34 of Kīlauea up close. We couldn’t ask for a better place to stay. Highly recommend if you are going to Volcano National Park or if you want a very relaxed, peaceful vacation to just unwind and enjoy the beauty of this amazing cottage.

Words cannot express our gratitude for our stay here. We were greeted by Jeffrey who was an absolute wealth of knowledge, and so kind. Their home is truly magical! Set in the ferns you feel like you are in another world. The home is so cozy and relaxing, full of books and character, we didn't want to leave. Jeffrey and Sally have created a true gem, honestly one of our favorite vacation rental experiences ever! We travelled all around and did some island hopping, but we could not stop talking about our beautiful time in Volcano. Thank you for your amazing hospitality, it was far beyond our expectations!!!

We had a truly magical stay! Jeffrey was incredibly kind and welcoming. As a park ranger, he gave us great insights and tips about Volcanoes National Park, and even swore in our daughter as a Junior Ranger – such a special moment for her!The house itself feels like a hidden gem in the rainforest. Surrounded by lush ferns and vibrant plants, with a hammock and a little fairy garden, it was simply enchanting.Sally’s inspiring book collection added a thoughtful and personal touch – we could have spent hours exploring her beautiful library.Thank you for sharing this peaceful and magical place with us – we will always remember it with a smile!

A cozy suite in the midst of a tropical rainforest! We delighted in sitting among the forest, as well as on the patio--trying to identify the various bird sounds. The provisions for the first breakfast were wonderful--definitely enough for 2 breakfasts. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. Jeffrey is a volunteer ranger at the volcano national park and he kept us informed of an impending eruption.

We had a great stay and hosts Sally and Jeffrey were welcoming & filled with area knowledge. The two-room unit was clean with easy access to Volcanoes National Park. Best for a real non-working vacation: no desk, no dining room table inside, and internet was offline for 2 days (the hosts had let us know that internet is normally great) though once working again, the internet was too slow & intermittent for video conferencing, plus cell reception was poor. Taking multiple meals each day at nearby Kilauea Lodge provided limitless coffee and fast internet which worked out well for combining work and vacay. There are two separate rooms, one with counter space, a small sink, and several cooking items including a microwave, electric frying pan — a good space for two travelers with two areas.

We couldn’t be more pleased with our stay and would absolutely recommend this property without any hesitation!

We loved staying in this cottage in a rain forest filled with tree ferns and flowers. It was peaceful, comfortable and beautiful . There was a yummy welcome breakfast for our first day. Our hosts were exceptional. Sally provided everything we needed for a relaxing stay. Jeffrey was wealth of information about Volcanoes National Park. He shared his considerable knowledge from years of being a park ranger. This was an added bonus. Our stay exceeded expectations.

Thankful to Sally and Jeffery for opening their home. We had a great time during our stay and had a once in a lifetime experience getting to see the volcano’s 20th eruption episode! Their suggestions for hikes and viewpoints were invaluable for getting to see Kīlauea in all its wonder. They were very accommodating. Almost everything you need to enjoy your time in the national park they have available.

This was our 2nd visit staying at the cottage. We love the peace and quiet of the location. Being right in the village makes it possible to walk to any of the restaurants and it's very close to the national park. Having a fridge, barbeque and microwave made it possible for us to prepare a dinner and breakfasts. There are a ton of great books to read and I was able to look up plants and birds we saw on our walk/hikes. Jeffery gave us great orientation to the park as he is a volunteer park ranger. Our first b'fast was provided which was very helpful and delicious. I highly recommend this cottage.

We very much enjoyed our stay at this private, quiet cottage in a beautiful Hawaiian rainforest. It’s very close to Hawaii Volcano National Park. The flora and fauna (birds) in the area are truly phenomenal. The cottage was well appointed with useful items such as a full fridge and hammocks, coolers, and guides to the area. We put the walking sticks to good use out on the trails in the quiet early morning in the park. We enjoyed witnessing a volcanic eruption for the very first time! Amazing! A general store is just down the road (closes early but has lots of cold drinks) and three days a week Rico’s taco stand is selling delicious Mexican food. You’ll love it!

I loved this place…great books, incredible rainforest, AWESOME hammock to hang in. Jeffrey’s knowledge of HVNP is a great “in” to have. I can’t recommend it strongly enough. Just be sure you know: it’s a kitchenette! There’s a grill but no stove…I didn’t read the listing carefully enough and came expecting to cook…but I’ll tell you: the restaurants were GOOD! Anyway, the hosts make this place a treasure. They’re super good people.

We stayed at the suite for 4 nights. To listen to the rain in the rainforest each night was so soothing. We ate out every night at near by restaurants. We took our time at Volcano National park. You can do it in one day but we were happy to have multiple days to see the park. There are easy hikes near Hilo that we also enjoyed. The property was well kept with lots of details, like cozy house coats and fresh ground coffee. We would highly recommend this VRBO. Jeffery was helpful with park details. We couldn't ask for more.

Two things stood out about this property: the grounds and the hosts. This is a semi-detached guest wing with a private entrance. So private, in fact, that there’s a separate gate from the road. The bedroom/kitchenette has windows on three sides plus a skylight, and the view out every one of them is tropical rainforest. Our favorite part was the two hammocks. We spent rainy afternoons snuggled in the one on the porch, listening to birdsong and rain on the roof. Sally and Jeffrey were wonderful. They walked us through the house and gardens, after which Jeffrey gave us insights on the national park from his experience as a current volunteer and former ranger. They were very available for questions and recommendations as well! While the kitchenette is well stocked with eating utensils and a few small appliances, I would say it’s much better suited to reheating or eating deli/takeout food than cooking. We made the mistake of forgetting oil and spices, and the grocery store options in town are very bare bones. We did greatly enjoy the breakfast foods they provided, and definitely had options from the local restaurants, but I will probably opt for no-cook meals on our next visit.

We loved our 5 day stay at Serenity Suites in Volcano Village. It was comfortable and quiet and unbelievably quiet. Our 11 year old grandson thought it was the best place he ever stayed. He loved wandering around in the rainforest. It’s only 10 minutes from there to Volcanoes National Park. I can’t recommend Serenity Suites enough. 💜

This is a cozy downstairs suite attached to a larger house neatly tucked into the jungle. It feels like a writer's den, where one would seek shelter from the modern world. There are hundreds of inviting books yet the draw of the nearby hikes meant we had little time to enjoy but a few of them. We only heard a few cars on the nearby gravel lane, which was a notable contrast to where we live in the city. You can lay in either of the two hammocks for a while looking out at the tree ferns and ohi' a tree tops blowing in the occasional breeze and get a sense of being transported back in time or to another planet. In essence, this is a perfect location for anyone wanting to be closer to nature while having the comforts of home. We will visit again hopefully.

The property was exactly as advertised and that was a very good thing. Great location near Volcanoes NP. We really enjoyed coming home after a day of exploring to a cozy home in the rainforest. So many nice touches such as the plethora of books and the excellent Hawaiian coffee. Plus I had great time hanging out in the hammock. Our hosts had a lot of knowledge about the area and were great sources of information about what to see and do. 10/10, highly recommend.

If you're looking for somewhere to stay with Sheridan sheets and the minimalist Hamptons look, this is not the place for you. Jeffery and Sally have created a warm, homely, cosy dwelling set in the middle of the most gorgeous mountain forest. The bed is comfortable and the lounge area has a cosy daybed next to the fireplace where you can relax with one of their many great books in hand. The icing on the cake for us was meeting Sally and Jeffrey themselves. As long time residents they have extensive knowledge of the area and, as Jeffrey is a volunteer at the Volcano National Park, he is a wealth of information. This home away from home is within close proximity to everything the village has to offer and, most importantly, only a few minutes from the volcano! We can't recommend the Serenity Suite highly enough. Thank you Sally and Jeffrey for being part of our wonderful time in Volcano!!

This cabin was very homey and cozy. Jeffrey and Sally were very communicative and gave us explicit directions about the location, tips on our way, what to bring, etc. They also gave us recommendations for restaurants , farmer’s market, and grocery stores as well as explicit directions for navigating Volcano park. We had a lovely breakfast the first morning of eggs, coffee, juice, milk, bread, yogurt and papaya and even had enough for snacks the next day. Jeffrey texted us with an alert from the park which was helpful. My husband and I had a lovely stay.

Our stay in Volcano Village was fantastic! Jeffrey and Sally were extremely responsive to any messages and provided useful recommendations for local events/restaurants. The Vrbo itself was extremely clean and well furnished, the breakfast provided on the first morning was a nice touch (the coffee grounds provided were exceptional). There was zero concerns regarding privacy, you are tucked away in what feels like a private rainforest. The location is less than 5 minutes from the National Park and about 40 minutes from Hilo (the largest local town). Since you have to drive through Hilo to get to Volcano village, its a good idea to stop for groceries on your way there. Overall, very convenient location if the National Parks are the emphasis of the trip. I rate 10/10 and will look to stay again during my next trip to the Big Island of Hawaii.

Exceptional experience. Jeffrey & Sally are wonderful hosts, lovely people. Jeffrey - as a retired Park Forest Ranger - has tremendous knowledge and experience regarding Volcanoes National Park, where he still provides volunteer service. Sally is very creative and it shows in the quaint and comfortable living quarters, nicely equipped with furnishings and park info as well as a gas fireplace. We would highly recommend these accommodations for your stay near the Park and would love to do so again ourselves.

This was a wonderful place to spend the last few days of our Hawaiian vacation. It's a great location because it feels like you're in the middle of a rainforest but it's quite close to many of the places we were exploring. Such a cute place to stay while we visited the Big Island. Beautiful lush foliage and singing birds made us want to just sit on the porch and look and listen to the beauty! We were just minutes to Volcano National Park and a short drive to other places we visited on this side of the island. Jeffery gave us great suggestions in the park, nearby restaurants and the Farmers Markets were close by and fun. It was absolutely perfect and relaxing!

VVSS is the best VRBO stay we have had so far! Rooms are very clean annd thoughtfully decorated, exactly like what the photos show. Water pressure is good! Very quiet environment. Close to the Volcano national park. Jeff and Sally are the best hosts we have had! Jeff gave us lots of tips and Sally left fresh breakfast in the fridge for our first day. They also gave us a calendar as parting gift. We truly felt we were their guests. One tip to future guests, there is a dehumidifier in the bathroom, and it works really well
