The house was unique and special - not the kind of generic room or apartment you find on rental sites these days. Its location was close to the volcanoes national park, but also remote and isolated. Joshua and Geneva gave us excellent directions to get there with ease and checked on us to ensure we had all we needed. Our five-year-old was pleased with all of the games, books, and decorations that showed him that kids are welcome at Volcano Home. Beds were comfortable and blankets were plentiful. Details that made it feel like people actually live in the home such as high functioning WiFi and the full set of supplies in the kitchen, would have made it easy to stay a long time - we wish we could have stayed a few more nights. My favorite feature was the outdoor shower, especially on a cold, clear night when I could stargaze! Some things you should know: you probably should have an all wheel drive vehicle to contend with the gravel road that the house is located on. It really does get cold and windy here (and at the national park) at night.
Our host went above and beyond to welcome us. And make sure we were set up for a great stay. The house was also so nice and beautiful!
This was an amazing place to stay. They thought of all the details and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. Their artistic touches throughout the property made it extra special. We loved being in nature off the beaten path, yet it was easy to get to the national park. We would definitely stay here again and recommend this to anyone visiting the big island.
Excellent choice for families who would like to experience nature comfortably with small children who can’t camp yet. Joshua and Geneva are amazing hosts. Everything from descriptions, check in instructions, local recommendations and a very thoughtful welcome gift exudes brilliance. I would love for an opportunity to stay again.
Joshua and Geneva are born to be the bestest hosts. Every little detail in the place was cared for from the art , natural elements in furniture to the fresh flowers and fruits welcoming . This place is one of the best homes we have ever stayed inThe kitchen was so well equipped and stocked (beyond our imagination). And the beach gear, home slippers, charging station each little detail for a comfortable stayJoshua and Geneva were in constant communication with us and the best part was they nudged us to go see the eruption before it ends and we had a once in a life time opportunity. This is is the pinnacle of what short term rentals should be. No notes! Mahalo Joshua and Geneva for a memorable and inspiring vacation and sharing your labor of love with us.
This property was amazing and the hosts went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was unforgettable.
Beautiful property! Very well stocked. Amazing setting.
The Volcano Home has a rugged sense of utility in its architecture, without losing a hint of homeliness or convenience. The area itself is quite rural, with gravel road crisscrossing dense rainforest. The hosts stock the kitchen, bath, and rooms with plenty of conveniences that might have been forgotten.
Beautifully decorated with fresh plants/flowers. Nice secluded location just a few minutes from the volcano. The owner notified us on our first morning that a new eruption had started earlier; and we were able to make it there to witness it. Loved the shower and the comfortable beds. Provided lots of vacation supplies (such as umbrellas and snorkel gear) and a well stocked food pantry.
This property has absolutely everything you need (and so much more) for a quiet & comfortable stay. We traveled with our one and a half year old and we truly could’ve packed a sack of clothes for him and been aye okay during our stay here with all the great amenities they had stocked up. You could true heart and soul went into this property and I can say without a shadow of a doubt, this is by far one of the best short term rentals we have ever stayed at! The quiet neighborhood and convenience to the national park was exactly what we were looking for during our first part of our Big Island trip. Definitely don’t skip on staying at the Volcano Home!
Loved my stay at the Volcano Home. My friend and I spent the last two nights of our Big Island vacation here to access Hawai'i Volcano National Park and Hilo. The property is "off the beaten path" and provides an amazingly memorable experience with a very comfortable homelike experience. I appreciated the communication with Joshua and Geneva that made the entire experience seamless. A beautiful and delicious fruit basket was provided on the kitchen and the entire kitchen is stocked with various food items as well as delicious coffee. One thing that stood out for me was how sustainable the property is, relying on a rain water catchment system for water supply. I can't recommend it enough and can't recommend Joshua and Geneva as wonderful hosts.
This home was featured in Discovery's "Building Off the Grid Series" which made it interesting and unique. This was the most well-stocked place I have every stayed as they had everything a person could need, including food!
Truly beautiful off grid home with all you need for a comfortable, peaceful stay! The welcome fruit and goodies was a special surprise and very much appreciated! Just a short drive to Volcano National Park which enabled us to see it at night as well as during the day. Really enjoyed the stargazing in the beautiful, clear night sky. The beds were super comfy! Highly recommend!!
