John was beyond welcoming to me and my wife we had an absolute amazing time at his property. The view is breathtaking. Had an overall great time!
What a special time we had at this house! It was convenient to all areas of the island and right on the Road to Hana. The house was clean, tastefully decorated, comfortable and had everything that we needed. Though there are many activities in Maui, we found ourselves at the house enjoying the breeze and the view. John is a gracious host and we highly recommend this property.
Beautiful place
Pole house is a great place for a unique Maui experience. John was gracious and informative. He has created a lovely place to slow down and enjoy a peaceful retreat.
We loved staying at the Pole House! It really does feel like a quiet retreat in the jungle canopy. The open floorplan and floor-to-ceiling teak and glass doors provide the right breeze for any time of day. We especially enjoyed watching the geminid meteor shower from the comfort of an outdoor couch on the wraparound veranda.John was a gracious and welcoming host! If you do book with John, be sure to coordinate your arrival with him, so that he can guide you to the parking and stairway.
Great rustic house with an amazing view and all the amenities. It's an open-air design that really allows you to feel like you're outdoors from anywhere in the house. It also means that "nature" is free to join in once in awhile, which was fine by us. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning in the future. Thanks John!
Everything about the property is as described. Very peaceful and remote. The view of the land and ocean was a sight to see. Jobe greeted us at the time of our arrival. Very pleasant and provided areas to go such as restaurants. I would highly recommend if you’re looking for pure relaxation and quietness. Thank you again!!
John was a wonderful host! The property was so beautiful and weather was great. Everything we needed was right on site, and John was readily available if we had any questions or concerns.
We loved this house in the trees! We love being secluded and surrounded by nature and this did not disappoint. You can’t get fresher produce than large avocado tree and the banana farm right on the property! John is very friendly and attentive and we enjoyed our daily conversations with him, always initiated by us, learning about the area and getting great recommendations for things to do. Would stay here again.
We loved the fact that we could completely open up 3 of the walls to the open air. After a day of exploring the island, the first thing was to open up and let the breeze flow through. There was fresh fruit all around us. The bananas picked fresh off the tree were the best I ever tasted. The owner John, and caretaker Jobe were very friendly and after having conversations with each of them I found we had a lot in common. We would like to return someday.
A wonderful experience in the Pole House. The host was kind and attentive. We hope to return again one day.
This property is gorgeous and the host was wonderful. From great conversations to great recommendations, John is a class act!
We had a wonderful stay at John’s farm! The views were absolutely beautiful, and we loved being surrounded by the banana plants. John was a generous host and shared fresh avocados and bananas with us, which was such a treat. The location was great—close to farmers markets and delicious restaurants. We really enjoyed the peaceful, open-air atmosphere and would recommend this unique stay to anyone visiting the area.
Beautiful place up in the trees with stunning views. Really feel like you are in nature! Comfortable bed and all the amenities you need! John was an excellent host!
My husband and I stayed in the pole house while visiting Maui. It is at the base of the road to Hana and near Haleakalā, both things we wanted to do while there. It is close to Pa’ia town for shopping and close to Mama’s fish house as well as other restaurants. The turtle beach Ho’okipa is also not far. If you surf, you will be close to some of the best surf spots on the island. The house is an open air house although you can close everything and use fans which is enough on this side of the island. Bugs were not an issue but we did sleep with the net around our bed just incase but honestly probably didn’t need it. There are geckos but they are afraid of you so you may see one on a window or one of the poles but they scurry off. We left fruit on the table and it was not an issue. There was just something about having those doors open with the breeze blowing in, I will miss it. John is such a hospitable owner and even cooked us dinner. There is a full kitchen, washer and dryer beneath the house, and an outdoor shower. The porch is a wrap around porch. There is also a grill although we did not use it. We are sad to leave.
Will certainly be returning
This place is incredible! It is off the beaten path but still close to so much. The place is beautiful with amazing views. The photos don’t really do it justice. We had beautiful sunrises, sunsets and even an intense thunderstorm. All amazing!!! John was a great host. He shared fresh bananas from his property and incredible dried banana. We will definitely stay here again in the future!
Custom pole house with views of ocean, stars and Haiku countryside. Closest you can get to a 5 star tree house. All the amenities you could want in a home that seems too remote to have them. Our favorite was the sliding doors on 3 sides of the house - opening them created a nearly constant tradewind breeze, along with the sounds of birds, crickets, and the occasional coqui. And the roosters as the sun rose each day, letting us know it was time for another day of adventure. Caretaker John is an extra joy - always around for adventure or cuisine choices. In fact, most of our dinners were at local eateries he had suggested. We even shared a meal and bottle of wine together - talking and listening to story after story as the sun set on this one of a kind banana plantation. We ate yummy apple bananas nearly every day, and John even made sure we had a half dozen or so on the day of departure. Don't miss this jewel of Maui. We hope to see it again.
John gave us such a warm welcome and never hesitated to see if we needed anything else. The property is AMAZING and exactly like, if not better than, the pictures. We stayed here for our honeymoon and it was the absolutely perfect choice for our stay. Thank you John!
House was so our style and unique. Custom built by the owner who we met and was super nice. Joe-B the caretaker was super helpful. Loved being up high with a view and getting served fresh bananas from the property. Enjoy!
Great location with a great view. Very relaxing.
We had a splendid time. The “Treehouse” was truly above the tree line and the view was breathtakingly beautiful. The owner, John, was friendly and very helpful. We hope to return soon.
Incredible week at this beautiful home. John was very accommodating and went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our stay and had everything we needed. Couldn’t have been more pleased with our experience.
The house is very unique and located perfectly for the start of a Road to Hana journey or exploring Haleakalā. The owner is very helpful. Would recommend to anyone moderately adventurous.
Our only regret is that we didn’t stay longer than the four nights that we booked. This house is magical in every way you could imagine. It’s really a work of art and looks even better in person. We lived bug free with the doors open the entire time, just enjoying the breeze all day and night. It’s an easy drive to most of the island and a breath of fresh air compared to the overcrowded commercial resort areas. John, the owner, is one of the most knowledgeable, helpful and hospitable hosts that we have ever stayed with. He supplied us with beach chairs, beach towels, snorkeling equipment, a cooler, umbrellas, and even helped us with some cooking ingredients. If we needed anything we just texted him. If you are looking for a unique place to stay in Maui, look no further. We will be back!
Beautiful, high quality craftsman built home felt like living in a treehouse! We kept all the doors open our entire stay making it feel like outdoor living. The geckos were friendly, chicken & frog noises were typical of Hawaii. Easy access to all parts of the island.
Staying at Pole House offers the best of Maui. With panoramic views, a wraparound lanai, very comfortable bed and exquisite architectural design, our weeklong stay was very special. We will be back.
The pole house is a one-of-a-kind, hand built japanese timber framed house with tique finishings. It’s a work of art— very airy, high ceilings and it has great views . John the owner is very friendly and accommodating. It looks much better in person than in the pictures. Highly recommend
My fiance and I stayed here for the first part of our vacation. The host was fantastic, super easy to communicate with and very responsive. Gave us great tips that helped us have an amazing time. Bed was super comfy. Even left us some snacks, water, and sparkling water. Would stay here again a million times if possible. What an incredible place with fantastic hosts who make you feel at home but are not intrusive at all. Could not have had a better time here.
We were amazed at the warmth and decor and incredible views from this beautiful home We would not hesitate to return. Jeff and Beth
My husband and I stayed here for the last two nights of our trip. The house is beautiful and well stocked with everything you need. The views from the lanai are amazing. Wish we had stayed longer! Hope to be back again soon.
It’s all been said in previous reviews, but very happy with location and accommodations. If there is anything you need, John is more than willing to make ut happen. He also has lots of interesting stories and showed my son how to cut open a coconut along with sharing many other talents and experiences about his life!
We chose this place for the second half of our anniversary trip. In our travel experience, it is completely unique and absolutely worth it! Since we’re both hot sleepers, my husband and I were concerned at first that we would be too warm at night without any air-conditioning; but you open up the walls to catch the breezes, and they have fans on site, and we both slept wonderfully well. It’s an amazing place to get into the rhythm of nature: we went to sleep shortly after dark, we got up at dawn, we enjoyed the view from each one of the decks, drank our coffee and ate our meals and were just incredibly at peace. The caretaker was also so kind and helpful!
This is the kind of place I wish no one knew about. My perfect paradise! But then, if no one knew about it, John would be out of business and I wouldn't be able to go back there. So here you go: When you sit on the patio of the Pole House you overlook the forest towards the ocean. That is pure relaxation! The house is beautifully decorated, I am sure it has been featured in one of the famous magazines. The pictures don't do it justice. There is a full kitchen with pots and pans, knives, cutting boards, and anything you need. The king bed is comfortable with a high-quality, thick memory foam mattress. The house was very clean upon our arrival. John is a wonderful host and quick to answer any questions. He even made us delicious pancakes one morning. There is beach furniture, bodyboards, and beach towels, and I am sure that if you need anything, John will have it. The windows open up completely, you get the feeling of being outside even when you are inside. There is a wonderful breeze that goes through the house all day. Before you book, make sure this is the right place for you: because you feel outside when you are inside, the outside will also come inside. There will be geckos and bugs inside. Nothing major (cockroaches or anything gross) but you'll have to clean up your crumbs before the ants find them. There is also almost no way of keeping the mosquitos out. But the mosquito net around the bed keeps you safe at night. For my husband and me this is a 15 out of 10!
This is such a wonderful property. So unique and feels so secluded. The doors that surround the space open entirely to nature. We slept every night with all the doors open and the breezes kept the space so comfortable. John, the host, is one of the most accommodating we’ve ever had. He is so readily available for anything you need and always has great restaurant recommendations and things to do in the area. I would highly recommend this beautiful and unique property. And will stay here again if I’m ever in Maui.
My family and I were blown away by the views and location of the Pole house. It was the quiet and serenity we needed from our busy lives in Los Angeles. Being able to open all the doors and smell the fresh rain, see the sunset over the trees and the ocean, was absolutely breathtaking. I also had such admiration for all the furniture and reclaimed wood pieces in every corner. Every piece felt so special and unique, and added to the experience of feeling you were in a very special space and not just a hotel room. My son loved the swing in the living room and my husband and I enjoyed our coffee in multiple spots on the balcony, there were literally no distractions- just the sound of the trees blowing and the birds chirping! The location is also perfect for activities planned in the upcountry. We went ziplining about 10 minutes away, Twin Falls also about 10 min away, and it's located at the beginning of the road to Hana. It's also close to a cute store/ restaurant Jaw's- where we stopped multiple times for a pizza! Thank you John for sharing this slice of heaven with us, we have memories that will last a life time! We will be back!!
John is an amazing host and really made us feel welcome and at home. The Pole house was incredible with fantastic views and a tranquil setting. Great location to visit Haiku town, Ho'Okipa, Road to Hana, Paia, and Kula. Probably our best trip ever, thank you John!
This is a lovely property with a fantastic view. It was spotless when we arrived. The kitchen included just about everything we needed. When we wanted a couple of additional items (a measuring cup and spoons), the responsive and amicable owner brought them right away. He also lent us an object our friends needed for their wedding a few blocks away. A great stay!
This was our FAVORITE place to stay during our 4 island - 4 week trip. This home is beautifully designed decorated and constructed. There is beauty in its simplicity but you will have everything you need. The views are spectacular and we loved the location near Pa’ia, the Road to Hana, and Haleakala. My only regret is we couldn’t stay longer.
My wife and I traveled to Hawaii for our first time and choose to stay here. It was a fantastic experience. Being able to see the ocean from our deck was awesome. John was a great host and offered great restaurant recommendations and made sure we had everything we needed for our excursions. The location felt secluded and away from major tourist areas which is what we wanted. Very peaceful. Would highly recommend!
The place was exactly what we were looking for - beautiful, open to nature, care in every detail and away from the touristy parts of the island. Reading in the hammock swing for hours looking out over the treetops to the ocean was an absolute dream, and John was incredibly gracious, communicative and helpful. We would love to come back!
We really enjoyed our relaxing and refreshing stay at the Pole House. It is unique in every way and beautifully built. Felt surreal taking in the amazing views from the balcony, including the gorgeous sunrise and sunsets. Loved waking up to the cool breeze, sounds of nature, and panoramic views of the sky and surrounding forest. It was the perfect location for our Road to Hana and Haleakala adventures. John, the owner, was very welcoming, kind, and accommodating. He made sure we had everything we needed and more. Enjoyed our conversations and listening to his stories. He was a very gracious host and we appreciated his helpful suggestions. Thank you, John, for a wonderful, memorable getaway.
The construction of the house reveals itself to be pure island perfection. Location is close to Paia, the jungle view to the edge of the sea from wraparound porch is perfect. The sunrise and the birds are joyous. The peacefulness and beauty of this property are beyond compare
We had a wonderful 2 week stay at the Pole House. The beautiful house with cathedral ceilings opened completely to the outside and you really enjoyed the feeling of being in the rainforest. The house is a little rustic but that just added to the charm. Though in a neighborhood with houses around, the view was nothing but rainforest and the ocean in the distance. Rainbows over the forest were spectacular. The host was always available and was very helpful and informative. The location was very convenient to the road to Hana, and the beach at Hookipa.
My husband and I chose this property for a three night stay before going to the beach. We enjoy exploring various parts of Maui and having unique experiences. This property is definitely unique! John the host is a delight and the house has everything you need for a relaxing stay. The views are wonderful! We would be happy to stay here again.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. John was an outstanding host. He was very accommodating to our needs. The house is absolutely perfect! John built it with his two hands. Love the different woods. Location was perfect to reach all areas of the island. If you want an authentic Hawaiian experience, stay here!
John was a great host! The place is beautiful and tucked away, just the perfect getaway. John was easy to get a hold of with any questions and gave great recommendations on where to go. Overall, the perfect stay and will definitely come back here the next time we come back!
The pole house is one of the most unique and amazing places we have stayed at. In addition, John is an amazing host. He is very down to earth, has great stories, and works hard to create a great environment for his guests. Last time my wife and I visited Maui we stayed here. We enjoyed it so much that we planned our second visit to Maui based around being able to book the pole house. We love being able to open up all the doors, the view of the trees, the ocean in the distance, and the quiet neighborhood. While we had many adventures on this trip: hiking into Haleakala, driving and hiking the northwest area, hiking south of Kihei, and enjoying the beach - the pole house is our version of paradise and we plan to stay here again on our next trip to Maui.
A little slice of paradise. Private and serene yet close to all of the things that we wanted to see and do. Every second we spent in the home seemed like something out of a dream. Beautifully appointed. We particularly loved the way that we felt surrounded by all of the sights and sounds of the jungle. Felt like we were staying in a luxury treehouse with an ocean view. John was a fantastic host. Attentive and friendly without being intrusive. Highly recommend.
The Pole House is a tranquil, one-of-a-kind, open air retreat. The spacious lay-out, comfortable furnishings, novel design touches and gracious host guarantee a memorable stay.
It was a peaceful interesting place to stay with a spectacular view. The Host was informative and helpful.
A secluded treehouse on Maui's north shore. Views of a tropical jungle canopy with distant ocean views. Host was gracious and helpful.
So happy that we chose this lodge blindly simply based on online reviews and we really enjoyed our 4-nights stay at this place. It's a beautiful unique house so well decorated and equipped with everything we would need but more than we can expect for. The house is surrounded with all the natural beautiful scenes and a really quiet place to enjoy a relaxing local life (except the very morning rooster that would wake you up!). Our child loves this house so much and felt upset he had to leave. The host John is a great person and so nice to talk with. We hope we can return next time!
Maui’s most breathtaking stay. I brought my mom for her birthday vacation and she was breathless when she saw the home. The photos do no Justice to how gorgeous and peaceful it is in person. It’s secluded yet, right down the road from grocery and local eateries. John communicates well and ensures that you have everything you need while there. Take time to communicate with him so that he can make sure you’re safe while on the island. The water for the shower was hot every time. And the kitchen was ample with all the items we needed for cooking including seasonings, pots, pans, utensils, cups, etc… In the beds, we fell asleep fast and woke up well rested each morning which was important in order to seize the day early. Our road to Hana tour guide was super excited when she heard we’d be starting in Haiku because it was ahead of all of the other tours along the trip. We beat all of them because of our location and got a really private experience. Everything was wonderful. 10/10 would recommend.
Host John is wonderful, properly well maintained. Will definitely come back and recommend to others.
