The house is comfortable with ample rooms. The bathrooms are unique. Location was perfect, near the beach, not far from great farmers markets. Nearby Sea View has a lot of local entertainment. We enjoyed the evening frogs and morning roosters. The owners dog is very sweet.

What was good: very private location, surrounded by rain forest, quiet during the day..., a few minute drive to black sand beach (mostly attended by nudists but also people with the clothes on), 20-minute drive to a sleepy village Pahoa (strongly recommend Kaleo’s Restaurant for a dinner). Beautiful green geckos living in the house. What was not so good: it is not such a problem that the accommodation was very basic but it could be cleaner. On entry we noted that the tablecloth was mouldy..., the house was not dirty but it did not feel clean neither, old fashioned hob and very rusty oven, outdoor barbecue was not cleaned for ages and looked if not used for ages. Sauna not inviting and no wood to make a fire. No microwave and no electric kettle. Limited cutlery. 3 pegs for the whole family. Noisy at night due to imported Caribbean frogs koki, which sound nice like birds but you may need ear plugs... The owner did not volunteer with any information. In our case he was not as approachable as commented by others. Having said this we enjoyed our stay in Hawaii.

I loved my one night in the house. Everything you need for a fun stay in the Pahoa area. Close to the beach and Uncle Roberts. I would love to go back for a longer visit!

We really enjoyed our stay at Joe's unique property. The home is a rustic homestead and in a wonderful rural location. The home has lots of outdoor living space as well as a spacious interior. The downstairs bedroom and bathroom spaces feel outside, but are enclosed and private with real plumbing, and a large relaxing bath tub. The sheltered patio area with a hammock and seating was a perfect nightly hang out space. We enjoyed Uncle Robert's night market down the road, as well as the local black sand beaches and natural, undeveloped coastline. The property is a nice, relaxing space with the closest "town" about 20min away. Come prepared to get away from it all and enjoy nature and you will be happy.

We loved staying at the Li'l Red Farmhouse! It was nice to be out of the main cities to stay at this unique house. Love that the house is environmentally concious. Cooking dinner on the outdoor bbq and having a sauna at night was delightful. Fresh eggs and honey and very friendly owner. Joe was happy to point out some beaches and local to-do's. We enjoyed waking up to the sound of the forest right next door. Close to a few great beaches and cute little town of Pahoa. Would definitely stay here again!

Joe obviously put a lot of love into the details of this home. The surrounding landscape is lush jungle. I have stayed in many different homes in Hawaii over the years, and this was my favorite by far. You can find a house with fancier amenities, I'm sure. But for pure uniqueness, you won't find another home like this. I stayed with my teenage daughter and she agreed. Joe was a great host, and the house is very close to the warm ponds, Uncle Roberts, Kalani retreat, Kehana beach, and the current lava flow as of 7/31/16. There are plenty of forgettable house on VRBO, but this is one is very memorable. Loved it!
