Property Overview
This rustic wooden mountain cabin is situated next to a forest, in a secluded spot away from the main house, on a 3.5 acre farm. At an elevation of 2,100 feet, it avoids the summer heat at sea level ('Cool and peaceful..' - Teri), yet is close to Kealakekua Bay (5 miles), kayaking, horse-riding, the Captain Cook Monument, Place of Refuge, and wonderful snorkeling. Ten minutes south is a small shopping center, with supermarket, Chinese restaurant, sandwich shop, bagel shop, pizza restaurant, etc. Three miles north is Kainaliu Town, with theater/cinema, Blue Ginger Gallery, clothing stores and other quaint places. One of the finest restaurants in West Hawaii (Keei Café) is less than 15 minutes away, and there are other lovely breakfast, lunch, dinner places and coffee shops nearby. From the cabin, a short walk across the property and along private paths through coffee fields leads you down a road that takes you through natural Hawaiian flora.
The 760 square feet cabin consists of a living-room, sleeping loft, bathroom, and well-equipped Hawaiian-style lanai kitchen with screens that look into the forest ('The forest is full of birdsong' - Claudia & Chan). A redwood deck is situated under the kukui and macadamia nut trees, and has a Polynesian gazebo. A charcoal barbecue ('An evening barbeque and wine on the deck - perfect' - Barbara & John) stands nearby. The cabin itself is a single wall structure built from exterior plywood. It does not have sheet rock and, like other Hawaiian-built cabins and coffee shacks, the plywood constitutes the inner and outer walls. Windows are aluminum and glass. The kitchen windows are wood, glass and screen, allowing for excellent ventilation.
The farm has three beloved and gentle dogs, three cats, sheep, and chickens. The farm critters are kept in an area at the upper south end of the farm, and the cabin is at the lower north end, some distance from them.
Guests will find fresh farm eggs, homemade bread, a fruit basket, Kona coffee, and other goodies to get them started.
Also worth noting - Jeffrey is an enthusiastic table tennis player. There are four clubs on the Big Island so if you play, bring your equipment!
Generally our guests' feedback is that the cabin is a comfortable place to hang out, read, watch movies and just unwind, or a cool base to return to after swimming, snorkeling and exploring the warmer locations elsewhere.
The proximity of the cabin to the forest means that there are a variety of forest sounds that can be heard - lots of birds in the morning, and tree frogs at night (especially in the wet summer months). As in any woodland setting, nature makes itself known!

We felt like we stayed in true Hawaii, not a resort. Great accomudations if a wee bit rustic. Convenient to things we wanted to see and do. Hosts were gracious and friendly.
We really enjoyed the bungalow and setting, as well as the amiable host and hostess. Would return in a heartbeat. Our expectations were exceeded. Birds, flowers, fruit trees and froggies. We slept well every night to the melodies of Paradise.
Jeffrey and Heide are wonderful people who've created a very cozy space for their guests. It is quite rustic and has its quirks but it's also beautiful and thoughtfully appointed, so if you are wanting a resort experience, this is not for you. if, however, a rustic, cozy cabin full of thoughtful touches, art, books, games, and pretty much anything you could need on the side of the mountain in cooler air, up a steep, bumpy road, away from the commercialism of Kona proper, surrounded by lush vegetation and the (fairly loud) sounds of frogs in the evenings and birds in the morning is up your alley, then this is for you.My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our time here and truly appreciate our hosts' hospitality and the visits from their little dogs and Cheese-Wiz kitty!
Lovely stay at the cottage surrounded by nature. Enjoyed being serenaded to sleep by the frogs and waking up to the roosters. Appreciated the well stocked kitchen, the fruit, bread, eggs and milk were definitely a cost savings. Hosts were very responsive to questions. Enjoyed meeting Cupcake, Buddy and Cheesecake :) A little cooler up on the mountain, glad we had sweatshirts. Great location near Two Step beach and Captain Cook monument for some great snorkeling!
Delightful cabin, property and hosts…love the cool at elevation, and very quiet but for the singing frogs
From the moment we arrived, Jeffrey and Heide went above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect. We were greeted with homemade gluten free bread, Lilikoi jelly, fresh eggs and local fruit. A complete overview of all the inner workings of the cabin was provided as well. Koa Cabin is beautifully appointed and has everything you need: beach towels, snorkel sets, beach chairs umbrellas, and even a few furry friends that we fell in love with! The property is serene, peaceful and beautifully maintained. The kitchen is fully stocked. Washer and dryer out the back door and even an iron for my granddaughter! Jeffrey was so kind to set the barbeque up for us complete with briquettes when I asked about using it. Thank you, Jeffrey and Heide for making our visit 'home' a magical one. Your attentiveness and caring nature is truly wonderful. A hoi hou!
A wonderful experience in the "back country" of the Big Island! Our hosts Jeff and Heide were very accommodating, providing us with just-baked bread, eggs, fruit and lilikoi jelly. There are two friendly pups who visit occasionally and a myriad of different birds to watch and flowers and trees to explore on the grounds. The cabin itself is cozy, well-appointed, with everything you would need for a getaway. Although we were lucky with dry conditions, you will need a 4-wheel drive as roads are steep and can be slippery in wet. We were thoroughly enchanted with this area - away from the Kona hustle and bustle, but close enough to visit beaches and restaurants. Special shoutout to the amazing hospitality provided by our hosts Heide and Jeff - we hope to return soon!
The property is like a botanical garden. It’s beautiful and beautifully maintained. The rental is down a small hill from the main house. 4x4 recommended to get up the hill, especially when it rains. This is exactly the type of property that my wife and I enjoy the most. Private Clean Unique Well appointed. We have rented many VRBOs but this was the first time we took our hosts to dinner. Jeffery and Heida are awesome and so thoughtful. We loved our stay and loved our hosts.
We feel so lucky to have discovered Jeffrey and Heide’s cabin. It exceeded our expectations in every way. The setting is so peaceful— the plants and animals really added to our enjoyment, not to mention the cabin itself which is unique, cozy, thoughtfully designed and well stocked. We appreciated having everything we needed— including snorkel gear, beach towels, and even water bottles. We have stayed closer to Kona on previous trips to the big island but have decided that we prefer this part of the island. It is cooler and was a bit rainy at times, but we were close to everything we wanted to do and away from the more tourist-heavy spots. A short drive took us to the sun and we liked being able to escape to cooler temps. The coqui frogs serenaded us every night— they didn’t bother us at all, but there is a white noise machine and ear plugs available if you need them! Our favorite part was probably Jeffrey and Heide who are the loveliest rental hosts we’ve met! It was a joy to stay here and we hope to return!
Jeffrey and Heidi are good hosts and sweet people. The cabin is behind their house but very private. The elevation makes it cooler in the evenings which we really liked, plus it’s far enough away from everything that it feels remote but also close enough to all the greatest spots on the Kona coast. The cat and dogs are friendly and the cabin is so cozy that we spent a few evenings just relaxing, stargazing and listening to all the sounds of the rainforest. The kitchen is very well equipped for making meals and in general the cabin had everything we needed. The frogs can be loud after it rains so definitely bring earplugs just in case. They make a really cute sound but they can be a lot. There are a couple of boogie boards, snorkel gear, coolers, beach towels plus the hosts stocked the fridge with some basics like milk and butter and fresh eggs from their chickens. Kona coffee, fresh fruits, freshly baked bread and home made mango jam was also waiting for us when we arrived! We will definitely stay again when we come back to big island.
