Perched in the sunbelt at the edge of a dramatic oceanfront sea cliff, this honeymooner’s paradise sits in the heart of the lush Puna District rainforest on the Big Island of Hawaii. With two air-conditioned bedrooms, this private cliff house retreat accommodates up to four guests in comfort and style.
Please note: Due to the property’s elevation—approximately 75 feet above sea level—it is not recommended for young children.
This 2-story, 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom coastal home holds the distinction of being only one of two licensed oceanfront vacation rental in the Kehena Beach community with a heated private pool (we manage the other one too). The home is uniquely situated with no neighboring dwellings on either side and is enclosed by 6-foot lava rock walls and a custom-designed metal entry gate created by a French sculptor.
Previously selected as a grand prize in a prestigious Hawaii vacation sweepstakes, this remarkable home stands out for its combination of privacy, artistry, and ocean views.
The private in-ground heated pool, nestled among a coconut grove, includes spa jets and a remote-controlled Endless Pools swim current system. Rinse off afterward in the outdoor hot water shower. Please note heated pool temperature ranges from 78 to 85 F.
Inside, the home is finished with Italian travertine tile throughout. Newly installed ocean-facing windows frame spectacular sunrise views over the Pacific. Binoculars are provided, though often unnecessary — Spinner Dolphins are frequent visitors to the cove, and during the winter season, humpback whales can often be seen breaching in the distance. You’ll also find reef fish feeding below, and might spot the native Hawaiian Pueo (owl) or ʻIo (hawk) soaring above the coastline. At night, the rhythmic calls of the coqui frogs blend with the sound of the waves for a truly immersive Hawaiian experience.
The primary bedroom features a California King bed, Smart TV, remote-controlled blinds, and direct views of the ocean and Kehena Beach. A washer and dryer are located adjacent to the bedroom.
The guest bedroom includes a full-size bed, Smart TV, remote blinds, and overlooks the pool and ocean.
The bathroom is wrapped floor-to-ceiling in Italian travertine and features a glass block shower and a high-tech washlet toilet.
The great room spans the entire second floor, giving the feeling of standing on the prow of a ship. With sweeping bidirectional coastal views, you can see a nearby pineapple grove and several Easter Island-style Moai statues, adding to the exotic charm of the home. The fully equipped kitchen boasts stainless steel appliances and granite countertops, and the dining area features a bar-height table with seating for four.
In the living area, two oversized sofas and a large chair with ottoman offer a cozy place to relax and take in the view. Special effects ambient lighting in a Rapa Nui (Easter Island) theme, designed by a Los Angeles-based artist, adds a dramatic nighttime flair.
Just a short walk away is Kehena Black Sand Beach, created during the 1955 lava flow. The trail is steep and rocky but well worth the effort. This one-of-a-kind beach is clothing-optional and home to a lively Sunday drum circle, adding a bohemian flair reminiscent of the 1960s.
Located just an hour’s drive from Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes, this rental is an ideal base for exploring the Big Island.

Nature Note: This sea-cliff home is in a very natural area of Hawaiʻi. As with most island homes, you may occasionally see small, harmless creatures like geckos (a local symbol of good luck ) or insects. We recommend keeping screen doors closed, especially in the evenings. If anyone in your group is very sensitive to this, please consider before booking.

I spent 3 life changing nights at this rental, and I am already planning my return. Words can't express how magical my stay was! I urge anyone thinking of renting this property to just do it. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! The oceanside location of the home simply can not be beat - I don’t think you could get any closer to the ocean. Falling asleep to the sounds of the waves is what my life has been missing and I plan to visit this area of the Big Island as much as possible and hope to stay at this house again. I have seen a lot of ocean in the continental US, and trust me when I say you have not really seen the ocean until you visit this area of the Big Island, Hawaii. I spent as much time on the lanais, watching the waves. I even saw whales! My group and I were very comfortable here and we had everything we needed. We shopped for groceries in Pahoa and visited several farmer’s markets in the area. The beds were extremely comfortable and the property was very private. I am in love with this area, and plan to start looking at real estate in the area during my next stay. Terry and Amber, the property managers, were extremely helpful. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
