Beautiful location. Fresh fruit was nice touch.
Nice place and great jumping off point for the north Kohala cost and Waimea. Everything amenity-wise was as advertised and worked fine for us. While the owner lives upstairs, we found the space to be quite private. She was so kind to bring us a plate of fresh island fruit as a welcome gift. Hope the new house being built just down the slope doesn't interfere too much with the great sunset views.
gorgeous views, host hospitality
Everything fine, only downside were the mosquitos :)
What a lovely stay in Kohala. The studio was very cozy and the hosts were very responsive. Would definitely stay there again. Mahalo!
I only stayed one night and it was exactly what I was looking for. It is downstairs with it a private entrance and a beautiful view of the coast.
The hosts were so friendly, generous and responsive. The accommodations were clean, quiet, and were just as listed. The view from the lanai is breathtaking! We’ll keep going back when we can.
Great views in a lovely quiet neighborhood. Studio had everything I needed for a comfortable stay, including a few thoughtful additions: snacks, coffee, binoculars on the deck, and a Hawaii guidebook. Nice hosts with good communication.
Everything was very nice. A/C is portable so not too quiet or efficient.Amenities more than adequate.Mosquitoes were an issue for my husband. Had delicious fresh fruit 2x from our hosts.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Kohala. Our host was warm, welcoming, considerate, thoughtful, and giving. The location was beautiful and the stay was comfortable. We couldn't have asked for a better end to our vacation. Thanks Mitsuko and Curt!
This place boasts stunning grounds! If you're a bird watcher, you'll love spending time on the porch, soaking in the sights and sounds. A vehicle is definitely handy for exploring the nearby malls and fascinating historical sites. Inside, we enjoyed the comfort of an air conditioning unit, microwave, and a little refrigerator, all surrounded by inviting sliding glass doors that let in plenty of natural light. One tip for light sleepers: consider bringing an eye mask, as the curtains don't fully block out the morning sun. The studio may be small, but we found it to be just right for our needs, and we were genuinely happy during our stay. Our host was incredibly welcoming and made us feel at home, even greeting us upon our late arrival and respecting our privacy.Just a quick note: avoid running the hair dryer and air conditioner at the same time—you might trip the fuse! Thank you so much for the wonderful hospitality. We truly appreciate it! Mahalo!at the same time—you might trip the fuse! Thank you so much for the wonderful hospitality. We truly appreciate it! Mahalo!
The location was up the hill, with beautiful views and great stargazing, too, due to being on the north part, away from city lights. It was perfect for a night after a day of exploring the Kohala area and north.
We had a beautiful view of the ocean. Located in a quiet neighborhood
can't beat the views from here! what a lovely property. quiet, safe, beautiful
Amazing, expansive ocean views!Excellent accommodations!Loved it!
vary comfortable stay wonderful hosts.
A truly beautiful piece of paradise! The lanai was absolutely incredible and the photos don’t do it justice. It’s even more breathtaking in person. The ocean views, sunsets, and stargazing were unforgettable. Sitting outside and seeing the Milky Way with the naked eye was a magical, unexpected gift.Although the studio is located beneath the hosts’ home, it felt completely private, and Mitsuko and Curt were respectful of our space. At the same time, they made our stay even more special. The fresh fruit tray from their garden was delicious, and their tips about local beaches, farmers markets, and must-see spots were incredibly helpful. We also had no issues with the studio being too hot with our end of July stay. The location is also fantastic, just minutes from some of the best beaches on the island. It was the perfect home base for all of our beach days.As mentioned in another review, if you’re looking for a luxury resort style stay, this would not be it. But if you’re seeking an authentic, relaxing experience with unbeatable views and warm hospitality, I can’t recommend this place enough.
We couldn’t have asked for a better place to end our 10-day trip to the Big Island. The property was beautiful and peaceful, with unbeatable views—sunsets that took our breath away and a night sky absolutely littered with stars. It was the perfect spot to relax and soak it all in. Communication was smooth and easy, and the hosts were incredibly kind and welcoming. We felt taken care of from start to finish. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a peaceful escape with unforgettable views!
This was a convenient location, very private and peaceful with excellent views and hospitality! Would definitely stay here again!
We Loved the night we spent here and are already planning a more extended return stay. Be sure to do the outrigger canoe trip -
Very nice host, warm and welcoming. We stayed 3 nights. Overall a good value and a relaxing place to stay. Reliable internet, comfortable bed, clean bathroom. Appreciated that they brought us a fruit plate of delicious mango/banana from their property. My only disappointment were the swarms of mosquitoes, and I had misunderstood that it was a free-standing studio cottage; it’s a downstairs studio below their main home. But overall we had a nice stay!
The view from the lanai is outstanding. Clean, neat, and comfortable.
Beautiful hosts, beautiful studio, beautiful location. I so appreciate having stayed here. Mahalo!
We were impressed by this apartment, which has a great deck for sitting out and enjoying nature. The host was very helpful and made some great recommendations for beach walks.
Definitely a price performer! Located on a hillside away from the touristed areas with nice views. Loved hearing the myriads of birds singing in the mornings. Nice spots outside to relax and unwind. Really appreciated the fresh fruit as well!Is a bit hard to find the driveway after dark, although iPhone with Goggle Maps did just fine. 40 min. drive from the airport; 20 min. drive to Island Gourmet Markets at The Queen's Marketplace (good place for groceries and much more).Could use some sprucing up...
A little family of birds woke us up every morning as the sun came up. I learned they were Java finches! I sat and had coffee every morning with my Java birds.
The studio has a stunning view overlooking Kohala Coast!
First off, warnings…do not stay here if you’re expecting a lux experience, and be prepared for whatever the island throws at you. We came after a massive rain, and there was a cloud of mosquitoes chilling on the lanai. It did limit our ability to take advantage of the outdoor space. The accommodations are basic so you get to be creative with your cooking, but it’s all manageable. Now the goods…this place is far more like the air b n b’s of old, with an absolutely personable and responsive host and a quirky charm unique only to it. It’s a FABULOUS place and an absolutely great location for exploring the north Kohala coast. Come prepared to enjoy a remote and secluded spot for watching the flora and fauna of the big island!
Perfect studio for our low key stay. Garden is lovely. Quiet neighborhood. Place is clean with basic kitchen items. The welcome basket was well stocked. And several times throughout our stay we had fresh fruiting waiting for us in the morning. Great views of ocean. Nice breeze. Great location. If it rains expect some mosquitos but our hosts had plenty of options to help deter them. Would definetly stay again.
We loved it here and our hosts were fantastic!it was peaceful and quiet, a wonderful location and we had everything we needed. Thanks so much Mitsubishis and Curt!
From your breakfast table far up from the north coast, you can watch and hear birds and see a vast expanse of ocean, sky and the Kona coast. At dinner enjoy fabulous sunsets. Hosts are most welcoming and have some yummy fruit treats too. We had a most enjoyable second stay and hope to return!
The magical nature of this property cannot be overstated. The single room opens on two sides with sliding glass doors to a corner porch that offers a 130 degree panorama of the Pacific from a hillside vantage point in Kohala. Sleeping was magical with the doors open, stunning stars, and bird sounds as the dawn broke. It was a joy to meet our hosts, and we greatly appreciated the morning treat of cut mango and blueberries in the refrigerator. There is a wonderful tiki seafood bar for lunch and dinner in nearby Kawaihae. We hope to return.
We enjoyed three nights here after being warmly greeted by our hosts. Slept well each night after watching the sunsets and gazing at a sky full of stars. Mornings were for sunrises and coffee on the lanai. Mitsuko sent us off with a lovely fresh fruit plate and even snacks for the plane. Very thoughtful hosts and a lovely home/garden. I would love to stay again!
Excellent stay.
The view was breathtaking, and the surroundings were quiet and peaceful. The unit was substantially clean, and well aired out. The unit was interestingly renovated as there were 3 large sliding glass doors on the 2 exterior walls, but it worked out very well in providing phenomenal views and airflow. They were even lockable: the way to do it was to lock 2 of them from the inside, and then the 3rd one using a key from the outside. Mitsuko and Curt were very inviting hosts; they personally greeted us when we arrived! On the second day, Mitsuko even cut a plate of fruits for us! Without us asking about a later check-out, she even told us that since they didn't have a new guest coming on the day we were departing, we were free to hang out for as long as we wanted until our flight! There were tons of very cute birds and geckos, and their cat was living the dream life just staring at the ocean view. For sensitive sleepers, the birds can get pretty loud in the morning, when the sun comes up. At night, the area is very dark, which is amazing for stargazing! I was able to see the Milky Way with my naked eyes, and even Venus' reflection shimmering on the ocean as it was starting to set. During the daytime, you can see Mauna Kea along with is observatories, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai all in one sweep. On the opposite side, you can see Maui. In fact, I think I even saw Haleakala Observatory with my naked eyes.
Mitsuko and Curt were amazing hosts. The property is very clean and functional. The views from the Lanai were just beautiful. We slept very well in the comfortable bed and the kitchenette had everything we needed. The location is in a quiet area on a steep hill. If you ride bikes, the location is incredible for riding the Ironman Hawaii road from Kawaihae to Hawi and back. There are some steep hills on the route, but none as challenging as the ride back up to the house from the main highway. Some 20% grades. Was awesome. Mitsuko and Curt were very gracious. They brought us fresh fruits and snacks almost daily and offered to share their Ahi dinner with us. Way above and beyond anything expected. They are just the nicest people you will ever meet. The property is beautiful and the views even more. If you're looking for a super nice place to stay on the North Kohala coast with super nice hosts look no more. You found it.
Location is in a very peaceful area with amazing views of the ocean, coastline and Mauna Kea. You need to figure out food options as it is remote but there was plenty of coffee and tea options in the room. A ceiling would be a benefit but the standing fan and air conditioner eventually cooled the room. The owners were very kind and helpful. Definitely recommended.
Curt and Mitsuko's place is a slice of heaven. The view is spectacular, and the songs of the birds and other wildlife in the morning is wonderful. Curt and Mitsuko are even better hosts, they gave us some local suggestions and treated us with a fresh fruit plate from their garden. Waimea and Hapuna are excellent nearby activities, we would absolutely stay here in the future!
Kohola Ranch is a special place, if you have never been. This studio had fabulous ocean views, and was well equipped for basic kitchen use, etc. The hosts were available, friendly, and very welcoming. My only wish was that there were ceiling fans in the unit. This would have been a plus. Also: If mosquitos like you, be careful at dusk and dawn. Due to the watering of the plants right in front, there were large amounts of mosquitos , which made relaxing on the Lanai a no-go for me.
the location was fantastic, sea view and wonderful sunsets, nothing was missing, friendly hosts, we got fresh fruit every day
Place is beautiful. Great ocean view with sunsets. Centrally located very near beaches and close to hawi and waimea towns. Close to great restaurants. Outstanding hosts who even provide snacks at check in. Peaceful and quiet neighborhood. We will definitely stay here again.
I loved Mitsuko's space. It is beautiful, peaceful, and a short drive to many gorgeous beaches. Most important, Mitsuko is kind and considerate and I felt completely at home and safe there. Also, we really appreciated the beach gear - big towels, snorkeling equipment, umbrellas (yes, you'll need them) and beach chairs. Thank you again for wonderful hospitality.
Loves the outdoor space!
This was a restful Oasis in a quiet neighborhood. We plan on staying again. It was good for our soul. Thank you so much for opening your home to visitors to give them this wonderful experience!
Thank you, Mitsuko for being a great host and with a wonderful place to stay along the Kohala Coast on Big Island in Hawaii. She was most helpful and accommodating in our communications. Her place was better than expected with fabulous views of the ocean and volcanos. We most liked watching the sunsets from the multiple outdoor and covered lanai spaces. The location was good in proximity to many fine beaches and funky seafood bar restaurant in Kawaihae. Her studio apartment felt cozy and private. The hosts were graciously quiet living above. It is beautifully landscaped adding much color and bird song. It was very clean and neat upon arrival. The large sliding glass doors with screens provided good air circulation and wonderful views from inside as well. The kitchenette was well stocked with equipment for light cooking. The unit was well equipped for beach activities. We would happily use Mitsuko’s place again when visiting the NW part of the Big Island. Highly recommended for those seeking comfort, quiet and outstanding views. Cheers…. Jack B. Gloucester, MA
My husband and I stayed here at the very end of our two week trip to the Hawaiian islands for our 30th anniversary! Wow! It was so beautiful with the view of the ocean in the distance and with all the flowering bushes and trees in the garden right off the porch. We loved it here and wished we could’ve stayed longer! Our hosts Mitsuko and Curt were so gracious and told us they weren’t expecting any guests right after us and we could take our time checking out and let us come back after going to the beach, which was well after the check out time, to shower before heading to the airport! Thank you so much Mitsuko and Curt!!!
The good news is this property has amazing views, including Hawaii's famous sunsets. The bad news is we found cockroaches in our unit. Being concerned they may travel with us to our next destination, we cleared out first thing in the morning without staying our second reserved night. We would have left immediately upon finding the bugs but there was nowhere else to stay in the immediate vicinity. Secondly, the only entrance to the unit is through sliding glass doors that cannot be locked except when inside the unit. There was no security for our belongings when we were not present. Finally, if you want a place away from everything, this is a good option but there is nowhere to eat. There were literally only two options for dinner on the Saturday night of our arrival. One place had no openings for three weeks, and the other had a live band with a cover charge. We were two weary travelers just trying to get a bite to eat. We immediately communicated with the owners when we found the cockroach. (They live above the rented unit.) We told them we were leaving in the morning. They claimed to have never seen bugs. We had to scramble at the last minute to find a place to stay on our last night on the Big Island and of course had to pay a huge sum for a last minute booking. The owners refused to provide any compensation for the night we did not spend in their unit. While you may enjoy the quiet and the view, beware of the bugs, security, and the owners. Oh, and bring your own food.
Situated high up the slopes of the north end of the island; from the porch one can enjoy a panoramic view that includes sea, both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, and all of the Kona coast. The studio is located on the lower level of a private home, and the hosts are most generous with little snacks, and in our case even first aid! Nearby are Spencer Beach, and an interesting ancient temple, other beaches along the north coast where whales can be seen. The town of Waimea has many restaurants and a farmers market mid-week. Kitchen is basic so don't plan on cooking any gourmet meals, just enjoy the peace, and watch the birds!
We enjoyed a quiet stay with a million dollar view. It was a great place to explore the north part of the island.
Comfortable little studio, in a quiet neighborhood with an awesome view! I would recommend bringing some mosquito repellent. Other than that everything you need is there. We had a great time!!
The studio is exactly what we were hoping for. We had wonderful views every day and the hosts were extremely nice and helpful. One little remark: the kitchen is rather small (which we knew in advance). So it was nice being able to cook at least some pasta, but if you are planning on cooking extensively then this might be the wrong place. If you are not planning on doing so, we can only highly recommend staying here.
Quiet place with amazing views especially the sunset.
My husband and I so thoroughly enjoy this quiet, peaceful retreat that we have returned year after year. We love the friendly owner/ property manager who makes everything easy and delightful. We will be seeing this place again, (& again)!
Large lots, very dispersed houses, great walking, dark enough for great stargazing and sunsets. Very clean with a nice ocean breeze at about 1000’ elevation, so the breeze was nice and cool. We will be back to this property. We’ve stayed in numerous locales on the big island and this beat them all.
Nice location, adequate parking. friendly hosts, small refer, microwave and portable electric stovetop, comfortable bed. Very nice ocean view.
Everything about our stay was excellent.
We loved our stay here. It is a very unique and beautiful experience. It is exactly what you want if you want to get away from the resort/tourist typical Hawaii stay. Very quiet, comfortable and peaceful. The sunrises had views in every direction…all you’ll hear are birds. Host was very accommodating to our checkin/out requests. There is a great local restaurant nearby - The Seafood Grill. The location is perfect for exploring all that is special about the North part of the Big Island.
Beautiful views. Gracious and communicative host.
Great views from room, quite area, great communication!
We enjoyed our stay here, the studio had everything we needed. We loved the view and watched amazing sunsets from the lanai! We appreciated the BBQ grill and beach umbrellas. We also liked the quiet residential location, close to great beaches and a local fish shop. Hosts were great, studio felt private. Highly recommend!
