We loved the house and the details in the decor and lighting, but as other reviewers have stated, the yard and gardens are the show stopper- absolutely beautiful! And as a birder you can’t beat the back porch for bird watching and feeding the pheasants. The kitchen is small but we had everything we needed to make our meals there. You will not find a better accommodation for the price on the island. Don’t miss the Kona cloud forest and the sound meditation journey just up the street- it’s worth the price.
The cottage and the property are just magical! The climate is quite different at 2,400 ft elevation - nice and cool. The creatures are fun to find - geckos and coqui frogs! The pheasants visit to say hello. Mary is a gracious host.
Absolutely picture perfect stay. Impressively decorated and incredibly comfortable cottage with a lot of quiet and privacy. It's only a partial kitchen, but that being said, it's stocked with so many additional appliances that it's easy to cook something simple for yourself if you need to.
It’s a gorgeous property that I wish we could have explored. Lodging is perfect with all needed accessories for a day at the beach. Location is very convenient to Kona.
Mary is an exceptional host beyond compare! Booking and check in were easy. And Mary was most gracious to allow us to check in early and then depart late. The cottage itself is absolutely charming with beautiful eclectic décor, comfortable furniture and bed and ample kitchen ware. The front porch chairs are so comfortable as well as the back porch lounge chairs and table and chair set. Everywhere you look there are exquisite tropical plants and flowers. It is such a hidden oasis. We loved relaxing there, listening to the frogs at night, feeding the pheasants and hiking nearby in the Cloud Forest. I’m so glad we found it!
Mary was very welcoming and made every effort to make our 2 week stay a delight. The cottage and extensive private tropical gardens make a fantastic retreat.
The host was very helpful when we had questions. This was my first time trying vrbo, my girlfriend and I had a wonderful time. If you're looking for a beautiful and secluded scenery. This is the place to stay, would recommend to friends and family.
This cottage was so amazing! It was so secluded and surrounded by gorgeous plants and wildlife. Mary was very responsive and helped make our stay incredibly pleasant. It was only about 15 min from the main Kona area and super close to the start of the Kona coffee belt. The place was clean, well stocked and had a lot of outdoor lounging areas for the days we didn’t travel much. There was even a cute little family of pheasants that would visit us every morning. It was such a cool way to enjoy the island, I would highly recommend!
Beautiful cottage and property. Host was very welcoming and helpful. Would definitely recommend staying here for a relaxing stay in a wonderful spot.
This place was spotless. The grounds are insanely pretty. At 2400ft elevation, it was cool wvery night. Mary, the host, is awesome. Minimal kitchen capabilities was only a slight issue. Really AMAZING and FABULOUS place to stay for a great price. Being right near the cloud forest sanctuary and many of the coffee farms was very nice as well
Pictures cannot do the property/cottage justice- this is a spectacular rainforest paradise! Well-appointed, comfortable, and the temperature up in the forest was welcome respite from the heat in Kailua town. Host has thought of everything and communication was easy. Do not hesitate to book this property- it will be a highlight of your stay.
Beautiful and definitely worth it
Beautiful surroundings. Private cottage. Good amenities.
The cottage was very private and in a beautiful setting in the rain Forrest, wild pheasants came to visit everyday, Mary was a great hostess, we would stay again and recommend to our family and friends
Was like staying in the middle of a botanical garden.
Amazing place with a beautiful garden has all the amenities you need highly recommend
This cottage was truly an amazing experience. Very clean space, although it is in a forest, you can tell this property is well looked after. You wake up every morning to pheasants, and they eat straight out of your hand. Very spacious, and the bathroom has a lot of free toiletries. If you’re thinking about booking, noon this place! The pictures do not do it justice!
Great private location in the mountains a few minutes from Kona.Loved being away, but not too far, from downtown.
We absolutely loved this amazing property! I cannot say enough about how beautiful the outdoor spaces you get to enjoy during your stay are. The owners have put so much hard work into making this a tropical rainforest oasis and it shows. The home was immaculate and had everything we needed to make our stay perfect. The pheasants coming by in the morning for treats the owners left us was the highlight of our mornings! We would love to come back soon and stay longer next time! Our two days here were amazing. Mary was such a joy to correspond with and we appreciate her so much!
Nice cottage with grounds very well maintained, all enclosed in a tropical foliage setting. Very pretty cabin well built but lacks comfort; for one, it seems does not encourage cooking. All cooking hardware from burners to toaster etc. all underneath the sink cabinets. Microwave on top of refrigerator needing effort to reach. (Needless to say, we did little cooking. Future guests should know you will be living of your luggage; no cabinets and small closet space in bedroom. That said, beautiful area; the drive, and especially the peaceful solitude of the area. As we enjoyed the whole island of Hawaii for 7 days visiting volcanos, hiking and just spending everyday at the beach was wonderful. Then to come to a nice place to unwind listening to all the night creatures from crickets to the coqui frog while constant rain, was delightful; then in the morning to be awaken by all kinds of fauna from domesticated pheasants to hens and roosters and an occasional wild pig, was entertaining. All in all a nice and value place to stay and depending on your needs and what you are looking for, a very nice place, but if you are into cooking, very limited supplies.Owners were very attentive and welcoming.
Clean, quiet, serene. Mary was gracious and accommodating, allowing us an earlier than normal check in after a long day.The pheasants were fun, the yard and gardens beautifully kept. A great out of the way location but still close enough to town.
We loved everything about our stay and can’t wait to go back. This cottage in the rainforest is absolutely perfect. The property is beautiful and Mary is so helpful. If you want to truly feel like you are on vacation on the Big Island this is the place to stay.
Lovely little hideaway with pheasants who visit each morning. Having coffee on the porch was a highlight of the trip along with being lulled to sleep by the jungle noises each night. Make sure to bring cozy clothes because it gets a little chilly at night but we will be sure to return!
This place was so magical. We loved the privacy, quiet, and incredible nature surrounding us!
It was almost too good to be true! It was absolutely beautiful with the landscaping, privacy, and wildlife. Mary is wonderful! Can't recommend this place high enough. Memories for a lifetimes!
The house was beautiful and so peaceful, and the grounds were gorgeous. I loved listening to the frogs singing every night. The hosts were so thoughtful and checked in on us frequently. They also stocked the house with every imaginable amenity. They made a magical trip even more fabulous!amenitya.magical trip even impressed, and
Great location if you're not the resort type, which we aren't. Up the hill from Kona but easily accessible with a car, short 10 minute drive away. Frogs, pheasants, and other birds abound on the property. Fast and easy communication with the host. Has all the amenities of home. Would definitely stay again.
It was a cute little cabin and had most everything we needed. There’s even beach gear, including an umbrella. The only thing I wished it had was a regular mid size frying pan, but there was one with very low sides for pancakes. Other than that it was a great place to stay and the scenery was beautiful. Also, the host is easy to contact and very helpful.
Building is gorgeous inside and out. Everything you need is there, we even left a couple bamboo mats for the next visitors. Sat out on the porch in the evening drinking wine and listening to the frogs.Note that as the proprietor states, it is up in the rain forest, so it will rain and can be cool. That being said, it's a 20 minute drive down to sunny Kailua (where it can be a bit uncomfortably hot!).Owner very responsive. Nice stay
Perfect getaway. Amazing nature. Lovely animals. 10/10 no complaints at all.
Beautiful little cottage away from the busyness of the resorts. The property is like being in your own private oasis. You can get to anywhere you want to go from there and when you return you have your own private space. We are hoping we have the opportunity to return one day.
This cabin has everything you could ask for, including a lanai with a flock of Hawaiian pheasants nearby. It is, however, difficult to find in the dark (a common experience if you've just come from The Mainland). Written directions were not sufficient and assumed that the visitor had access to GPS. So, there was some fumbling around on our part that made us totally miss a spectacular sunset. Other than that initial experience, everything was fine. Stores and restaurants are near, but not TOO near -- welcome relief in an area that is loaded with all the accoutrements of a large Mainland suburb and tourist colony immediately down the hill. The grounds around the cabin are lovely and the kind of relaxed Hawaiian atmosphere that many visitors seek awaits.
Loved this little piece of paradise! The pictures do not do it justice. The frog sounds at night, the pheasants visiting the backyard, the amazing porch and yard area. We loved it all! Thank you! Perfect location and hope to come back!
This is the most delightful VRBO I have ever stayed in. I absolutely adore it and never want to leave. It is absolutely serene. I was a little nervous about finding the location after leaving a workshop that I knew I would need some processing time to myself for before returning to my regular life, but I have the place I want my regular life to me. But she gave me a good reminder about finding it, and the entry into the space was easy and welcoming. The host is responsive and gave some extra information about the wild pheasants which I also adore now. :)Mahalo 3
This place is absolutely beautiful tucked up in the rainforest. You have a beautiful view the all the plants and friendly animals. The frogs will sing you a song each night and it's just a 15 minute drive to the ocean.
This is a super nice cottage 15 min from the bustle of Kona. The gardens are beautiful (but do beware of mosquitoes at night). The house is well supplied, even with beach chairs and snorkeling gear. The sun sets are gorgeous. We wish we could have stayed longer!!!!
Frogs were wonderful to fall asleep to
The cottage was beautiful!! It had absolutely everything one could need! The grounds were spectacular!! It is about 15 min or so out of town.. up in the hills.. perfect! We highly recommend staying here! Thank you to our hosts!!
Wonderful house. Very quiet and comfortable.
I would have given this place a five-star rating, but having only one set of bath lines per person for two nights isn't a 5-star place. It's one thing to reuse a towel for two showers but not have to reuse the washcloth!
It is a 10. Loved the position, the cottage, the surroundings the bed, shower and feeding the pheasants but feel we have to add, we are in our 80's. still love travelling and relatively active but.... we found the high bar table and heavy wooden dining chairs uncomfortable and difficult to get on and off! Kitchen very well equipped with everything you could want for kitchen appliances and utensils but, for someone who loves nothing better than to cook a meal on return from a busy day sightseeing, it was not a success - there is no counter space on which to work! Perfect for take out and a quick breakfast but I should have done my homework and made sure it was possible to cook a meal! Our fault but obviously others are very happy.
This beautiful cottage is upcountry away from the beaches and the tourist life. Quiet with lovely garden and privacy. Just what we wanted.
We were enchanted by the lodging (aka a Ohana). Perfect for a couple. Lounging outside was sweet. Also got some fantastic sky watching on the last night.
From the house photos, and location at 2,500 feet, we were expecting rain every afternoon, but only saw it clouding over in afternoon and on two days had clear blue skies to sunset. The deck was very wet in the morning with dew. It is a lovely house, with a great deck to enjoy breakfast from, set in a beautiful, extensive, private, tropical garden, which we loved walking around. We enjoyed the great, very peaceful, relaxing, location that was within a ten minute drive down the hill to Kona, and the beaches, but also close to the "Belt Road" for easy access to north, south and east of the island. We did find the house chilly in the evening (no heating) and cold in the morning, even after the sun had warmed up the outside deck. So be prepared! Of all the places we have stayed at in Hawaii over the years, this was the best and we plan on returning there next time.
This property is at a higher elevation which is great to come back to after a hot day on the beach. That said it is quite cool in the morning and evenings - we wore sweatshirts and pants inside. Mid-morning it starts to warm up and the back lanai is a beautiful spot to lounge in the sun. The cottage grounds are beautiful - with lush, tropical plants everywhere. We had no issues with mosquitoes, just the odd moth but didn’t bother us. Inside of the suite does feel like a cottage in the forest and not a hotel. Floors were not the cleanest and there were some dead bugs in the throw rugs. We did find a couple cockroaches in the kitchen around the sink, but I would expect this anywhere in this sort of environment. Some appliances could use a clean (coffee maker). The cottage itself provided everything we needed - from shower amenities/hairdryer, to extra sunscreen to beach chairs and snorkel equipment. The beach umbrella was a lifesaver and we used it on a number of occasions. Our beach towels did get quite grimy after a couple days. Our host did ask if we wanted replacements but it was almost the end of our stay and we didn’t have any more trips planned. Bed was comfortable and blankets the perfect weight. Tree frogs are loud but earplugs block them out completely and they stop sometime around 1 am. We got used to them after a few days and didn’t have a problem. Would definitely recommend staying somewhere like this rather than in Kona.
This is a great place to stay with you and one significant other. Beautiful sights and sounds, while still being close enough to town to go in if you want. Great launching point for adventures.
We enjoyed our stay and proximity to all the great Kona beaches. The visiting pheasants were a lot of fun. The higher elevation made it great for sleeping at night.
My partner and I absolutely loved staying in the tropical cottage- it was so beautiful both inside and out, and had everything we needed. We loved the visits from the pheasants every morning and falling asleep to the coqui frogs every night. The landscaping is just gorgeous, and the decorations in the cottage are lovely. The perfect place for a little romantic retreat.
This cottage is even better than the pictures!!! First time we stayed at a rental that exceeded our expectations! The owners are wonderful and had great recommendations. Highly recommend!!
Loved the cottage. Great location that isn't far from Kona sights but feels like it's in a different world. Quiet nights with nothing but the sounds of the jungle. One of the things we appreciated most was the gloriously cool nights. The jungle temps were often 10 degrees cooler than down by the coast making sleeping amazingly comfortable.
What remarkable rain forest sounds at night! A beautiful cottage and wonderful hosts.
This vacation was my first without children in 3 decades and we were really looking forward to a week back home. We started in Hilo and this was my first experience choosing through VRBO. That experience went perfectly...5 stars. I chose this location for Kona side mainly based on privacy. The neighborhood was very quiet, the gardens were beautiful, and the pheasants were a pleasant surprise. What wasn't expected was the printout front/back of rules, plus the messages of additional rules! Hawaiians tend to live Aloha so it just seemed unpleasant to have to squeegie the shower or face additional cleaning fees. We wanted to sit outside at night but because there's standing water we were eaten alive by mosquitos even with the citronella candle. And, the mosquito zappers didn't work. She didn't tell us when we booked that the gardeners would be coming as early as 8am on Monday during our stay. If she told us early on we could have cancelled since we work night shift. The internet worked a few minutes out of each day and Mary did reboot the modem...finally she told us we could use her internet to check in for our flights but we asked someone back home to do it for us. Overall, I would give the experience 4 stars but I think we would choose another location the next time we are Kona side.
This was a gorgeous little cottage tucked into a very private/rainforest feeling area. The space had everything needed—beach towels, beach chairs, coffee maker—just really set up to host well
The cottage is very comfortable and private. You are surrounded by beautiful trees and flowers. The stars on a clear night are bright. The host was fantastic and you’re only 15 minutes from downtown Kona. This is a fun place to stay while you enjoy the rest of what the big island has to offer.
Great stay, lovely location! It is a little bit outside of the centre up the hill so you are likely to get rain if there is any! Only complaint was that some gardening needed to be done at 8am one of the days which was very loud and disruptive, the internet was extremely slow and patchy and the rules listed are quite strict, especially regarding charges for losing items such as towels or kets and excess dirtiness. This wasn't an issue for us fortunately.
We really enjoyed our stay! It is a magical place for two.
This was a romantic getaway cottage. The night sounds were enchanting. The host thought of every detail! They even have coffee stocked. Visiting with the pheasants was joyful. Be sure to check out the cloud forest sanctuary up the road ( reservations are a must. Also, the coffee plantation a little further. Free tours on the half hour, very educational. Unfortunately, the wifi was out, and my Hotspot reception was in and out, but really, we were one vacation. Mahalo!
Beautiful, uniquely designed cabin amid lush rainforest plantings. We especially enjoyed the deck to hang out on ( even in frequent showers). And neighborhood pheasants were a particular pleasure! Quiet and peaceful base for Kona explorations.
Loved this cozy place. Best thing was falling asleep listening to the frogs singing. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a wonderful, quiet place to stay in a little piece of paradise.
Everything was great about this beautiful property. Would definitely return to this location. Thank you!
