Rental Details
Property Overview
Our property has been a vacation rental house for 16 years.
At night the ocean sound is your lullaby to get you to sweet dreams. Kehena Makai is beautifully furnished in classic Hawaiiana style rattan. The two bedrooms both have wide oceanfront view and its own bathroom with shower. Suitable for family or two adult couples to have an low key, relaxing Hawaiian vacation. The woven bamboo ceiling and local Hawaiian art work add to the authentic ambiance.
The house is built in the traditional sugar cane style and yet newly constructed in 2001 and finished in 2007. This is a classic Hawaiian home in upscale materials and design. As you open the entry door, you see a 16' glass sliding door between you and the ocean. The kitchen, dining and seating "great room" is 17' wide with 16' high ceiling. All the furniture is rattan, the sectional, dining set and barstools with brand new Sunbrella cushions. The decor is Hawaiiana right down to the surfboards and traditional local crafts. There is a desk, TV with Wifi and a large collections of books about Hawaii culture and history. The floors through out the house are porcelain tile. The kitchen counters are rain forest marble tiles. Light fixtures are retro-tropical to complete the look.
On either side of the great room are master bedrooms with showers that have ocean views. The bedrooms face the ocean and have 6' windows. Even the windows on the sides of the bedrooms have ocean views. You will appreciate the views and the windows that all open for the sea breeze. The showers in each bathroom are quite large and feature unique local touches.
The sliding doors in the great room open onto a 35' lanai perched 40' above sea level. It is 53' to the water from the lanai. There are very few places anywhere in Hawaii this close to the waters edge. The lanai has a Made in USA dining set and 2 swivel rockers, lounge chairs and ottomans.
The lanai at the front of the house has an American made patio dining set. This lanai is private and offers full sun. Dining here can be out of the trade winds and away from the porch lights.
There is a carport and covered entry stairs in the old Hilo style as it does rain at night especially. Locals fish off the pali below the house and opihi pickers test their luck at low tides. There is no ocean access below the house due to the rough waves most of the times. And remember to never turn your back on the ocean like the Hawaiians always say, rogue waves do appear. Never let your children be downstairs at the ocean front unattended.
The laundry room is downstairs, accessed from outside the house. Besides washer and dryer there are some ice chests and beach chairs. Beach towels are in the closet in the right hand side bedroom. There's a cooler and handy bags in the laundry room and the closet upstairs, there maybe snorkel gear, reef slippers and beach toys but sometimes they get misplaced. The yard is landscaped with orchids, heliconia, ginger and monstera. There is an ocean side outdoor shower under the lanai.
Please note that we do not take same day check in and check out. If the day has a guest leaving please do not book it.

Wonderful all around. The lanai is stunning.
This is our favorite place to Stay on all of the Hawaiian Islands. We have been going hear every year for the last 5 years.Mark and Robin
Beautiful property as described. The ocean sounds were magical, and very easy to get to the black sand beach at Kehena! This is the real Hawai'i for sure.
Sitting listening to the ocean waves is very relaxing. The sun doesn't shine directly on the deck, which I truly enjoyed. I did want the chairs to fully recline. The Lava Flats are close by and worth a visit. The black sand beach has no easy access route that we were able to find. My next trip to the Big Island, I will look for this rental. I did find the key box a little difficult to open and the laundry room instructions takes you to the wrong side of the house.
Lovely place to stay. Had everything we needed.
Absolutely loved every second of our stay. Easy getting into the home & it was amazing. Thank you to our hosts
This is our second time hear, and you can beat the Views and the ocean sound.
Our home was perfect. We loved everything. Thank you!
The view alone gives this place a 5-star rating! The house and it's amenities reinforce this rating! We loved our stay here & would gladly visit again!
Beautiful location! The back balcony was my favorite part! Listening to the waves crashing against the lava rock cliffs was priceless!
My friend and I stayed at this beautiful house for several days in February 2025. This house is so close to the ocean that all you hear is the peaceful sound of the waves. I have never slept so good. The house is very comfortable and beautiful. You will not be disappointed in your stay here.
Amazing experience. Lots of driving.
The house was very nice and well equipped. The picture of the view on the listing doesn’t do it justice, truly breathtaking.
This property is fantastic! Beautiful and clean! So comfortable! The kitchen is well equipped and had everything we needed. The bedrooms were perfect. But, we could not get over the amazing location. Stars! Whales! Rainbows! Waves! We did our grocery shopping on our way since this home is tucked away. Additionally, screenshot the entry code in case it’s dark when you arrive because cell service might not be available. I hope we’ll be able to return in the near future.
The back lanai has an awesome view of the ocean. Ideal for sunrises. We also saw dolphins and whales. Susanna was very helpful. Fantastic visit.
Lovely home in a chill neighborhood. We have stayed here more than once.
It has always been my dream to stay in a house right on the ocean, sitting on a lanai and watching the waves. This stay completely fulfilled that dream. The house is very nice, beautifully furnished, and equipped with excellent kitchen appliances. It is located on a very quiet street, about a one-hour drive from the center of Hilo. There is a ceiling fan in every room, and with all the windows open, the ocean breeze allowed us to sleep comfortably without AC. I would highly recommend this house.
Excellent location. So wonderful we never left to do anything. Just sitting on the deck watching the waves roll in was mesmerizing and relaxing . It had everything we needed. It is showing a bit of wear in the year since our last visit and could do with a little maintenance on the very front door and sliding door. Overall, we were thrilled and already planning a third visit
If you are staying here it is for one reason only, the back lanai...and it doesn't disappoint!! The pictures can never do the listing justice and the crashing of the ocean sounds awesome. You most certainly need to rent a vehicle for this place. The only thing we felt that should be mentioned and isn't currently part of the listing info is that this place has NO air conditioning. For those of us who keep a cool cave of a bedroom at home, this is unfortunate. With overnight temps in the low 70's and humidity over 90%, if you aren't used to it, you notice it quick. If that's no biggie for you, then you are in for a treat here as the view and sounds are second to none!!
This was my second time staying at this location. It's a 5 star value in all regards. A beautiful home with a great layout in an amazing location. The delight of just relaxing on the lanai or going out becomes one of the most difficult choices to make. I will be back for a 3rd stay and have no hesitation recommending it to others.
This place is amazing and we will be going back soon.
Great stay. 2nd time and less to do from 2015. Lots of driving. House was great but in need of some TLC. Needs a new coffee pot and outer door hard to open. Love the sounds of ocean.
This house is a jewel box. Don’t stay here if you want nightlife, easy beach access, or Kohala type amenities. Do stay here for peace and quiet and incredible 180 degree views of the ever-changing sea.
This was our second time staying here, and we loved every minute of watching and listening to the waves crash on the epic lanai. Looking forward to returning next year.
This property was amazing. The views were spectacular. The owners were great at communicating with us and there were no surprises. Very clean and we loved the decor. It is off the beaten path but that was exactly what we were looking for. We definitely want to come back and stay here again. Thanks for sharing your little piece of heaven in Hawaii with us.
