Property Overview
HBR is a 5 Star Resort and is widely regarded as one of the nicest places to stay on Kauai. 8231 is ideally situated in the Plumeria building on the "point" of this 22 acre Resort giving you spectacular views! This Hotel Room has some of the best views in all of Kauai. Unobstructed views of Hanalei Bay and a panoramic view of 4000 ft. mountains laced with waterfalls are yours when you look out or step out onto the private lanai. One of the rare unobstructed views left on Kauai. From the lanai you overlook a protected bird sanctuary while watching and listening to the white water surf of Hanalei Bay.
This unit has a King Size Tropical Canopy Bed with a full Master Bath and private Lanai that sleeps 2.
This condo is a top floor unit, which gives you better views, improved security, vaulted ceilings for a much larger feel, and you don't have the noise of people above you. However, this is one of the few 2 story buildings on the property; most are 3 stories, so you don't have to climb 2 sets of stairs every time you enter or leave. There are only 6 steps to reach the front door.
Furnished in authentic Pacific-style with Hawaiiana and Polynesian antiques from around the world - including China, Thailand, the Philippines, Bali, and Burma - this beautiful condo has an amazing collection of old Hawaii touches. The bedroom has a romantic king sized canopy bed. The condo has a mini fridge and a coffee maker. There is also an outdoor kitchen with gas grills directly adjacent to our building at the lower pool. The unit has a new flat screen TV with DVD, and the entire unit has wireless internet access. Laundry facilities are about a 1 minute walk from the condo. There is a daily resort fee of $25 per night, parking fees of $20 per night, and a 1 time check in fee of $50. This is paid directly to the Resort when you check out.

This unit is a partitioned master suite from the main unit masquerading as a condo. To say there is a means to really cook in this unit is false. In fact, you cost us money because we were under the impression that we could cook in the unit and we went to the grocery store prior to checking in. It's pretty funny that you take a picture of the outdoor association kitchen so that one might believe you actually have the means to cook a meal. There are not even any pots and pan in the unit to use the outdoor kitchen! But, hey, you do have a spatula, so we had that going for us. The location of the 'bedroom' and deck is nice, so that is fair enough, but to charge what you do for a partitioned bedroom is borderline criminal. In my opinion, you should not be able to market this as a condo. Sure, it is part of a condo complex, but it is nothing more than a rental room with a college sized refrigerator, toaster and microwave. We were not informed that you could not park near the condo and we brought 5 large surfboards that we could not bring on the golf carts. When we arrived we were told that we would not have power for two days and that we should have been notified by the owner -of course we were not and felt we should have had a discount if we were to live without power. When informed of the power situation, the person who checked us in was aware of the owner and semi-rolled there eyes. Though they said nothing negative of the owner of this unit, their body language spoke.
It was very comfortable with amazing views. The property is absolutely amazing!
Plus included a comfortable bed and I could hear the ocean. The unit needs deep cleaned, painted and the running toilet fixed. The attempt to provide kitchen amenities is sad and the furnishings and linens need replaced.
Great mountain view and a flexible host!
Air conditioning set too hot . No change allowed Room is Tiny. Poorly lit. Bathroom fan is very old and loud. Very old tubCable out all week . WiFi difficult to access . Tiny refrig in closet . Tiny microwave in closet. All electric outlets overloaded. No phone charger. Had to charge it in bathroom (!)No couch - either straight up chair or bed with pillow Restating No WiFi hoookup all week
Had a wonderful stay here. The view from this room was amazing - so nice to watch the sun rise from bed. The room was clean, as described and in a unit near the bottom of the property which provided more privacy. Resort fees were higher than advertised which was the only down side.
The resort is very nice, with beautiful grounds and two nice pools. 2 restaurants on-site are also a plus, although I would consider the food at each just slightly better than adequate. (Good if you do not feel like going into Hanalei.) Views from restaurant and the unit are spectacular. The room itself was reasonable for two people, but slightly odd in configuration since it was a separate space of a larger unit (e.g., there was an unusable hallway space leading to a door to the larger part of the unit). The bed was very comfortable, but the awning was slightly weird. There was a table and two chairs inside, which was nice, but no other space to sit. A large wooden sculpture took up valuable space that could easily be used for a chair. A coffee maker and small refrigerator were provided, along with cups, dishes, and silverware, which was useful for breakfast. There were, however, no other kitchen facilities. Best to think of the space as a good-sized hotel room. Access to a well-shaded beach with an easily accessible coral reef was a plus, and the owner and resort provide beach chairs and umbrellas. The resort and unit sit relatively high, which provides for great views, but also requires a somewhat lengthy walk down to the beach and then back up. The resort does have carts available that can pick you up if the climb is too challenging.Note: A daily resourt (25) and parking (25) fee along with a one-time 50 check-in fee added over 400 to our 7-day stay.
Was great! Everything as posted! Would definitely recommend!
The location and resort were amazing!! I contacted the host after several days of a running toilet and the problem was never resolved. Fortunately it continued to flush, however we had to listen to a running toilet the entire time. At night we kept the bathroom fan on and shut the door, still able to hear it. For the light sleepers that we are, this did not make for a restful vacation.
The unit is dirty, the bathroom is covered in mold and stains, as well as roaches. The listing is misleading and pics must not be recent. This is not a studio, it's a master bedroom with no kitchenette. You have to do your dishes in the bathroom. So many items are broken from the chipped art to the unravelling bed to chunks missing from the walls and even the bathtub. The bathtub has no stopper and is in such disrepair it couldn't be used. Its also very slippery, my kid fell twice taking a shower. The toilet is old and leaks constantly. I truly have never used such a disgusting bathroom in a vrbo. Also the canopy of the bed was covered in dead bugs. I wrote to the owner aboout these issues and received no reply. The only pro was the view. Otherwise it was a horrible experience and the owner does not seem to care. He responded once to my first inquiry about not having any supplies/toiletries and sent someone with hand soap. After that it was radio silence. The resort overall is run down and old, and the hills are very steep to get anywhere. The listing says there are 6 restaurants. There are 2 that only open after 3pm with a store that sells coffee in the morning. Fortunately there is a better resort next door so we ate there every day. Even the info on the map they give you at check in was outdated, for example, the wifi network and pw were not current. So overall very little to recommend.
Great spot for our honeymoon! The resort was beautiful and it had an amazing view. Definitely will be booking again!
we were very surprised to learn upon checkin that your car must be parked in a parking area and not near the condo at all. This was very hard for us because not used to walking up and down several steep hills. I wish that this was told before we booked this. The room was small but we expected that. The cleaning and toilet , bathroom fan need work.
The view of the mountains with partial ocean view was amazing and it is rather private, which was nice. The amenities such as the ice chests and chairs were greatly appreciated! The owner was responsive and took care of everything we had questions about. The bed was comfy. Glad they had a broom. Because of the amenities, we will probably stay here again. I would ask about the cost of getting a towel switch out and maybe a room clean with sheet change and more trash bags and toilet paper if you are staying a week or more. They provide body wash, shampoo and conditioner so I brought soap for hand washing and the shower. The shower bath combo is dated but no bother to us. Laundry is close by and you can get quarters and soap at the lobby.
Beautiful room at a wonderful resort! Steve was very helpful and answered any questions we had!
This is basically a resort where individuals own the rooms and the property manages check-in. That being said, the property didn’t have any record of our visit being booked. It took over an hour to get fixed so that we could get checked in. Not the resort’s fault, somehow there was an error with the owner submitting the booking. Parking is pretty packed. You also can only see the ocean from one far corner of the balcony and even then the ocean isn’t particularly close. All of this wasn’t great, but by far the worst is that the air conditioning was broken and sleeping in the hot humidity was not particularly restful. I messaged the owner and he kept saying that he was sending people to check it out. First they didn’t come, then when they did come there was supposedly a fix made that didn’t help the problem and then several things to push off the fix. It was not fixed in our several day stay and no compensations were made. We had a wonderful trip, but staying here was definitely the worst thing about our trip.
Went to check in and the property owner had failed to register us with the resort. Finally, after an hour of aggravated effort, we were able to access our unit. Unfortunately, the unit is about 1/4 mile from car parking so we were left with calling for a shuttle or taking a long hike up some steep hills. We will probably find a place more accessible next time.
Good combination of location, view, and furniture. Host was professional and reliable. Would return.
Wonderful property, beautiful resort, helpful and friendly staff.
The property is amazingly beautiful with a great view of the ocean
Over all room is great, and would stay again. Host responds and communicates very well.
The condo was very nice and cozy and the view was absolutely stunning! It was so nice being able to hear the ocean at night then wake up to the birds singing in the garden below. I loved it and would definitely go back.
It was an amazing place to vacation. The view is magnificent! The bed was very comfortable and the service was great. The entire process was super easy. I never corresponded with the owner, there wasn't a need everything was so seamless.
We had the best time at Hanalei Bay Resort. Our host was timely and attentive when we needed some specific help with check-in. The room was gorgeous and clean. I loved the vaulted ceilings & canopy bed. The bed was also comfortable & sheets felt fresh. The view was even better than the pictures - absolutely stunning! My only suggestion is some new bathroom rugs but overall we were incredibly pleased with our stay and would love to return as soon as possible. 10/10
This room looked bigger in pictures. I wouldn’t say the view is “unobstructed”. TV wasn’t working and when you call the front desk they instruct you to call property owner. Texted property owner but no response. Furtherest building from the main parking lot so expect to walk a long ways. If you call for cart service expect to wait more than 15 minutes. We’ve stayed at other rooms at Hanalei Bay Resort before, this one was the most dated.
Resort is excellent and room is excellent
We had a lovely stay. The view from the balcony is unmatched. Would definitely come back.
Mahalo for a wonderful relaxing vacation!
They couldn’t find our reservation and it took and hour to get in.
Hanalei Bay Resort is a very nice place to stay, if you are ok with the hills. There are the carts but it can be a wait sometimes, especially to & from the very hilly beach path. All resort costs are out of date. All higher than posted-parking, resort fee, bunch of taxes. The paint inside the unit needs to be redone badly. The pillows are huge. Tub needs resurfacing again or new tub! A throw rug might be good. Instructions on how to work the remote for the A/C so you don't freeze on a cold rainy night. An extra blanket to go with the thin bedspread provided. It would make sense to rehang the tv on the wall instead of standing it on the table - taking up precious room space. The items listed and pictured as being provided inside the unit are outdated as most aren't there. It's usually something in it's, but not always (no pan). Had to contact owner and he's on EST he wasn't happy when we re-asked 2 hours later. Longer than we've waited anywhere else. Owner had prop manager come to handle issues. She was great. No phone contact allowed. The property is great. The view is nice down into H Bay. A pizza restaurant is on site and open in the evening. A restaurant with a bar that opens for happy hour with music later in the evening. good food. small store on site where you can buy coffee and some small items. You have to wear a wrist band while on property. 2 pools and a hot tub, yard games, firepits, tennis courts - saw some people trying to play pickle ball on them.
We love Hanalei Bay Resort and have been multiple times. The property is wonderful for families, and we enjoyed the activities including fish feeding, bingo, and yoga. While the views in this unit are great, it would benefit from some basic improvements/attention. In particular it did not seem clean, as evidenced by sheets that smelt stale, grease/film in the bathroom, and multiple lizard/cockroach sightings. There are multiple chips/breakage in the bathroom tiles. The owner was responsive when we asked for a new shower curtain liner and a potential mid-week cleaning (we decided to do that ourselves d/t the cost). We will definitely return to this resort, however we will consider other units first.
We paid for a week upfront and I was surprised at checkout when they charged me $380 for resort fees and taxes. This should have been explained upfront. The place was wonderful though. Just be prepared for daily fees of $17 for parking, $22 resort fees, 4.71% general tax and 13.25% accommodation tax… all daily.
We had a wonderful time! Room is a little dated but the views make up for it. The resort is beautiful and the views are absolutely amazing. Very nice area. Very quiet and relaxing.
Wonderful room and view, resort is fantastic and staff is very helpful. One thing I would keep in mind is that there is a connecting room so you can hear the neighboring guests pretty clearly. Other than that everything was perfect!
I had a wonderful experience. The room has a beautiful view, a comfortable bed, a small amount of dining supplies, plates, silverware, knives etc, and a couple of portable mixers(I used to make my fruit smoothie in the morning. The walk to the room meanders through the HBR property for sure, but I didn't mind at all. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
Loved the resort. Had a great time despite the rainy days.
We had a wonderful time, with everything aligning as described. Thank you so much for helping make our honeymoon memorable!
Was not warned of hilly landscape. Was hard for me. Had to get a golf cart shuttle and felt obligated to tip every time. Even the beach that was advertised as being close to was up a huge hill, then down a huge hill. No comfortable furniture inside or out. Even beach chairs were falling apart. No tub plug. Drain full of hair. The place needs less furniture, comfortable chairs, and a good sprucing up.
Small ‘hotel room’ with dorm-size frig and coffee maker. Bed was very comfortable. No space in room for suitcases or for one than one person to sit other than at small dining table. But location is great and view from lanai is gorgeous. An adequate room and a good value, so recommended.
We loved our room. The view was a peak of the bay and the left side if Bali Hai. We couldnt see the tip of it due to a wall next to us. We loved the birds chirping. No buildings in front of us. The unit is a small studio, with fridge, microwave and coffee pot only, but really great. Its a good walk down the hill from the parking lot. Comfy bed. A little dated, but also reasonable price for what you get.
If you consider this a motel room and NOT a condo, you'll be fine. It really doesn't lend itself to cooking and doing dishes, but if you just need a microwave to heat something, there's one in the closet. There's a coffee maker, but only one coffee mug. The on-site dining doesn't open until 3:00 p.m., but there's a small refrigerator (also in the closet) for your milk if you want cereal for breakfast. The bed was comfortable and there was no problem with noise. There were plenty of towels, but two rolls of toilet paper wasn't sufficient for our ten nights! The room needs some attention.... such as, fresh paint, repair the bathroom fan, a plug for the bathtub, replace burned out lightbulbs, etc. but otherwise.... it's an AMAZING location with a great view on well-maintained, beautiful grounds with a pathway to a spectacular beach.
The resort is very nice. However we didn’t use any of the facility’s amenities because we were exploring the island, so for us it was pretty expensive.
View from property NOT unobstructed - it is limited. The property owner MISREPRESENTED this suite as being suitable for 4 people. IT IS NOT. There is only 1 bed and NO ADDITIONAL WALL BED OR SOFA BED. We had contacted the owner directly prior to departure to make sure that it was suitable for 4 people and were assured that 'yes, we're all good to go'. We arrived late at night and were shocked to find that our two teenage boys had to spend the first night of our vacation sleeping on hard, tiled flooring until the owner provided an inflatable mattress from storage for the 2nd night AFTER WE HAD ALREADY DRIVEN TO WALMART TO PURCHASE ONE FOR OURSELVES!! Since when is an inflatable mattress considered an acceptable sleeping option in any vacation rental unit?!! There is no kitchenette; only a leaking mini-fridge in the closet (that soaked my son's shoes) and 2 person coffee maker. There were only 1 wine glass and 3 forks. Previous reviews of this unit being poorly maintained have not been addressed by the owner. There is no cleaning service or cleaning supplies/equipment available for use, so we spent 10 days in a dirty unit. There are no toiletries provided so we had to do lots of shopping to make up for the many deficiencies. The Hanalei Bay Resort needs to tighten up its contract with these privately owned units. The communication between the front desk at check-in and to address deficiencies is lacking, disorganized and poorly reflects on the resort itself.
Liked: the beautiful views from the balcony, the comfortable bed. Disliked: the bathroom smelled moldy, and it looks like the inside shower curtains haven't been changed in a while as they have mold on them. Also the bathroom sinkhole smelled like mold. That would be my main complaint is the slight mold smell in the bathroom. A good bleaching and change of shower curtains should help. Also chickens crowing at early morning like 5am, I know is not a fault of the property, but something to be aware of if you are a light sleeper.
I have stayed at Hanalei Bay Reaort before. The resort itself is good. Kauai is overpriced to begin with, and the daily fees from this resort sure add up. The room was fine, we knew that it had a small kitchenette and mini fridge. However, there were no coffee cups to go with our coffee maker. The silverware, cups, etc could have been stalked a little more. We had to wash the dishes since they looked dirty. Also, there were two feminine sanitary napkin wrappers in the bathroom drawer. The shower head had visible mold in the holes. I understand that being near the Pacific Ocean is going to cause some mildew. However, for the expensive price and $30 daily rate, it would have been nice for the cleaning service to actually clean the place. I know a few things about the resort, and I believe that this room is owned by someone who rents it out to vacationers. I think the room is fine, but if the resort is responsible for the cleaning, this owner and renters are not getting their full money worth. Also, the bartender at the Ukelele Bar self tipped himself. I wrote $5 on the tip line, but he went ahead and tipped himself $8.50, right over my signature. I will be calling the resort about that one. My parents have been staying here two weeks each year for 20 years. You can’t beat the view, the pool, and other amenities. This resort is not for someone wanting a fancy extravagance. However, I certainly would hope no one wanting this would be going to Kauai. Go to Maui if you want that.
