Property Overview
Come make Ka Hale Malie (the peaceful house) your own tropical cottage! Located 500 Ft from the ocean cliffs as the crow flies but not on the ocean. It is located in Hawaiian Paradise Park in Keaau, HI which is centrally located to visit Volcano, Pahoa, and the new black sand beaches of lower Puna (Pohoiki).
The little cottage has one bedroom with a queen bed that has sliding doors to the back lanai (porch) for you to enjoy your coffee or your candlelight dinner. A bathroom with a (purified) rainwater shower. A fully outfitted kitchen with gas stove, full refrigerator, microwave, countertop convection oven/toaster, coffeemaker, blender, new PFAS-free "green" pots and pans and a variety of items for cooking. The attached living room has a vintage rattan couch and chair, a TV, Roku streaming device, a DVD player, a library of over 50 DVDs (island themed!), and WIFI.
The house also has a front lanai (porch) with a table and chairs and a back lanai with an outdoor rattan couch, a table and chairs for dining, 2 bar stools and some "party lights" for nighttime ambiance. The best hang out spot may be the covered carport which has been transformed into an outdoor rec room/tiki bar complete with tables and chairs, a BBQ with charcoal and a charcoal starter (uses newspaper, not lighter fluid, and gets coals going fast), and coolers you may use during your stay.
The cottage is the only property on the 1/4 acre lot to give you privacy. Most days, and especially eves you can hear the crash of the waves on the cliffs, less than 500' away. Within a 5-10 minute walk is the beautiful coastline area where you can take a few chairs (I provide the portable ones in the bag-located under the tiki bar), a few beverages and watch the sky and the ocean. During the humpback whale season you can see and hear whales. Rainbows over the ocean are a common event!
Mahalo (thank you) for considering Ka Hale Malie and should you decide to come the cottage will welcome you!
There are also a few masks, snorkels and fins; beach towels, paddle ball, frisbee, etc. for your use during your stay. If you want an island tour of any size/duration, I can recommend a great tour guide!

It was a lovely location and a beautiful little sanctuary!
Very nice outside areas and an easy walk to the coast!
The host was very responsive and the house was perfect for the two of us. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes. Plenty of extra blankets and pillows. And the outdoor space was downright dreamy. Sat on the lanai while it was raining and stayed dry. Location was great for short walks to the cliffs or to the trailhead of a more substantial hike. And yes. You can hear the ocean!
Cute little house. It had everything we needed for our stay. The back lanai was delightful.
Very peaceful
The place is perfect for 1 or 2 people. Great area for us near family. Only suggestion would be new mattress otherwise, awesome
Perfect in every way
Will contact thru email
We really enjoyed our two-week stay at the cottage. It had a little of everything we needed for a pleasant stay. The back lanai was especially nice. The geckos would visit us every time we ate on the back lanai. And you could hear the ocean from time to time. Lots of ocean cliffs nearby to walk to and explore. The only recommendation we have is to fix/replace the microwave above the stove, although Kelly had a backup microwave available. Everything to see on the Hilo side of the island was within a 90-minute drive from the cottage. We would definitely rebook the cottage if we return to Hawaii.
I had the most wonderful stay in this beautiful cottage. The kitchen was amazingly equipped and the bed was incredibly comfy! The back lanai was a place I never wanted to leave and the sweet area next to cottage was a perfect place to hang with my son and family when they came over to visit me. A very sweet neighborhood and I loved falling to sleep hearing the deep ocean roar and the incredible symphony of koki frogs and crickets. I cannot wait to return soon!
we had a 5 day great stay April 8th to April 13. Had everything we needed. Went to the local grocery store and bought the food we needed. The outside was beautiful. Had a bar b que with our friends who live in the area. Thanks Kelly
Such a cozy home. Definitely recommend the nearby Shipman Beach (hike through 2 miles of blessed shade to such a beautiful spot!)
The property contained everything that we needed and more. At night was could hear the ocean waves and frogs. The morning we awoke to the rooster crowing. The cottage was big enough for the two of use to move around without getting in the way of each other. The only thing the cottage could have used was a bit more space for clothes. My wife likes to put her clothes in the drawers, so I got to leave mine in the suitcase, but I am a guy so I am used to that.We saw the volcano erupting, so the whole trip was a success!
Great yard and neighborhood for this vacation rental. However inside the rental needs a deep cleaning and new kitchen supplies. Even the potato peeler was broken. The nonstick pans were old and probably have the older unhealthy coating. The furniture on the decks was comfortable but the inside couch and chairs were not.we did enjoy our stay despite these things.
Relaxing listening to tree frogs. Had everything we needed.
Fantastic spot, fantastic host. Close enough to be away from everything, and yet far away enough
It was quiet and secluded. We really enjoyed our stay!
This is a great cottage. Small but very well equipped. Not a far walk to the cliffs where we saw 10 or so turtles swimming below. The other direction is a 3 mile hike to a secluded beach. Would highly recommend.
Good area to walk in, beautiful plants good location.
After staying in several VRBOs near enough to the highway to hear it 24/7, it was nice to get away to a quiet location (except for the young gals in kitty-corner house that partied all night but it didn't keep us up much; in our sixties, we have to admire their stamina). Comfortable bed, nice to have a private back porch and back yard with some decorations. Not far south to Pahoa with interesting food, shops, and people. Walk about six blocks to a stretch of lava cliffs popular with friendly locals and fisherman who sometime gather for music near sunset. A good neighborhood for walking. Never met Kim but she sent someone over when we needed help with some things.
This little cottage was exactly what we needed for close proximity to family. Owner was easily contacted and very responsive. The yard with birds was enchanting.
This property was as described and exactly what you see in the photos. Ocean close by (to view) and private.
This property is very centralized to the west of the big island. It is also located in a very safe and quiet community but beacuse of its location you will have to travel to go to the store, beach, parks, etc. So if you like quiet and peaceful then this is the spot for you.
