This is a deal considering the beautiful stretch of oceanfront land in this area.
This cottage is one of three on the estate. Please check out our comment book!!!
We keep a book in the house to capture customers comments that are made about our place and how we can improve our accommodations. It is FULL of messages just like this!
1) Susan And Andre...We had a wonderful time here! The patio overlooks the ocean and we saw whales jumping and crashing right in front of us! The cottage is located on the beautifully lush Red Road and is very convenient to the cool town of Pahoa and also a short drive to Hilo. There is an awesome black sand beach directly across from the cottage and a farmers market at the end of the road (west end I believe) that was one of my favorite activities. Local vendors, music, food, dancing - farmers market was definitely a highlight. We would absolutely stay here again.
2) Thank You so much, the past 3 nights in the cottage have been FANTASTIC! I realy look forward to coming back to visit.
3) Very nice cottage! We really enjoyed! Two thumbs up! We will recommend this place for sure!
The Whale House is located in one of the most beautiful places on earth - Kehena Beach, on The Big Island of Hawaii. There are actually 4-5 black sand beaches in the area to chose from. (Kehena Beach, Mackenzie Beaches and sea caves, Kaimu and Kapoho Beach ( must hike to ).
Our spacious cottage is one of the closest cottages to Kehena Beach on Kalapana-Kapoho Rd (aka) State HWY 137.. Our cottage also has a washer & dryer, FREE Super fast WI-FI internet, land line w/ free long distance, Direct TV, flat screen TV w/ Netflix, tile floors, outdoor rock or gas BBQ’s and typical household amenities that give you the feeling that 'you are at home
It doesn't get much better than this.
It also has an ocean view from every room in the house, including the bathroom.
If you are interested in Yoga, we are situated 3 doors down from Ramashalla, located here on 'The Red Road'.
Many people come to Hawaii to visit Volcano National Park - home of Kilauea and the periodic lava flows just a short distance from us. There are also Hawaiian jungles, tropical rain forests, beautiful coastal views, geothermically heated ponds at Pohoiki Beach, can snorkel at Kehena/ Pohoiki (when water is calm) , surfing at Pohoiki Beach, whale watching w/ dolphins that migrate to the warm Hawaiian waters from Alaska. You can often see them from our lanai off our beautiful coast - in the Kehena Beach area. Many of my tenants have told us that they were able to swim w/ the dolphins and you can too!
This is the place for water lovers - you should see the spectacular ocean view & sunrise over the south pacific from our lanai - where you may want to eat your breakfast!!
Also, did you know that we have the newest black sand beaches in the world? These were created by the recent volcanic eruption and are now the most popular beaches in Puna. You can easily navigate all of these places from the cottage in Kehena Beach.
For those of you who are seeking night time entertainment, check out 'Uncles Outdoor Hawaii Bar' if you want to sip a beer, listen to live Hawaiian music, eat great food and enjoy a farmers market at the same time.
In addition, Volcanoes National Park is just a 45-60 minute drive.
You are also close to the lava viewing area, KaMauna Caves ( large lava tubes) , coastal tide pools, snorkeling, fishing areas, Akaka, Kahuna and Rainbow Falls, Boiling Pots, hiking, Farmers Market (1/2 block away), Space Community Arts Center, Keck Observatory, Kilauea , Uncles Bamboo Tiki Bar w/ live music, cafes, food markets, Volcanoes Nat'l Park and so much more - are just 10-45 minutes away.
My mission is to make sure that you have what you need to make your visit a happy, and memorable experience ! This is also a great place to relax and enjoy nature. Many people come to Kehena Beach to 'get away from it all and breath clean air, eat great food, soak up the sunshine, exercise, commune with nature, and meet some wonderful people. So come and find out 'what the aloha spirit really is'. We invite you to come truly is one of the most beautiful places on earth.
You will love this place !

Beautiful view, good amenities, easy check in/out.
The communication from the hosts was terrific. The cottage had everything you needed except maybe a beach umbrella. We are seniors so some instruction on how to use the remotes for the TV's would have been helpful, but we managed. The location to Kehena beach was excellent. Uncle Roberts bar and the local store were very convenient. We even had a good luck gecko living with us!
I spent 10 nights here in November. This is a very clean cottage, very well maintained. The owner/host is awesome and was in the area taking care of his other cottages so I spoke with him a couple times. He even stopped by and dropped off a new air fryer for me one day. Worked out great for fish and crabcakes from Pahoa. What’s incredible about this place is the location. It’s right in the middle of the red road along the south eastern cliffs of the big island. this is easily the closest vacation rental to Kehena Beach, about a one minute walk. stunning Beach, I’ve never seen anything else quite like it, but check it out before you go. It’s not an ordinary beach. Location is remote, beautiful, but only about an hour from volcanoes national Park. I was able to make several trips to the Volcano during my stay. Hope to stay here again!
We were looking for a place to stay for the night outside of Hilo while exploring that side of the island. This little cottage is clean, spacious and directly across the road from a beautiful, secluded black sand beach. It was magical! We would absolutely stay here again and enjoy it for a longer stay. I would have loved a single serve coffee packet to have enjoyed on the lanai in the morning, but honestly should’ve remembered to bring some with me. Everything was perfect. Thank you so much for having us!
Great little bungalow tucked away in paradise. Check-in was easy, kitchen supplies were sufficient for the two of us and wifi was more than sufficient. It’s “off the beaten path”, but if you want a touch of tranquil Hawaii, this place will transport you there
We absolutely loved the Whale House! The location is absolutely beautiful and the area was very quiet. The unit had basic kitchen supplies but they were very limited. The in bedroom air was great and the bed was very comfortable. The beach across the street was definitely one of our favorite spots to go and relax. We would definitely stay here again on our next visit and recommend it to anyone going to the Big Island.
Very clean!!
Had an amazing stay - Andre was very communicative especially when the power went out! Property was a perfect base camp for everything we wanted to do in the area (Volcanes NP, Hilo, etc) - accommodations were comfortable and having the ocean right outside our door was just amazing! The area is charming and the people are kind! Will definitely be coming back!
Our stay at the kahena beach cottage was amazing. It was on the rainforest side, which gave us a wonderful "off the beaten path" experience and It was directly across from kahena beach, which is a nude beach so be mindful of that before bringing your kids and making the nude people uncomfortable ( watched this happen). The inside of the cabin was very clean ,comfortable and up to date. 10 out of 10 rating
We were able to stay here and enjoy this time while being able to sightsee the island. The nearest beach is clothing optional so beware. And the new beach is Giant pumice rock... So before warned before you expect to go swimming everywhere. However the place itself was great for what we needed!
Such a cute little property.Rented here before and always happy about it
Very nice place to rent. Looks recently renovated. If I stay in the area again, would definitely consider renting again. Would also consider other cottages on the property because I think they might have better views from balcony
The kitchen supplies essentials pans etc need to be updated. Because of being away from places to eat we were cooking and could have used so basics.
Right across the street from the beach easy parking easy everything incredible place highly recommend to anyone
The cottage is in a great location to explore the South Island lava flows. Communication and check in were flawless. There is no store or food near by so bring your own.
Nice little cabins tucked in off the road right across from the black sand beach. Everything was very clean, bed was comfortable, TV had roku. Very tight parking but doable for small cars, fairly quiet with sitting area outside. We didnt need anything else. Would definitely stay here again.
Clean and nice
Very nice cottage, great hosts. The only minor issue we had was that the kitchen could use a few basic amenities. Overall, we loved it!
Came to Puna for my big sisters celebration of life. The place was perfect. Great location, quiet, clean and right accross the street from Kehena beach.
We enjoyed the quiet tropical stay at The Whale House after a few busy days of work in Kona. Andre was super responsive when we had a bit of trouble finding the place and when we needed a light repaired. Great location and don't miss Wednesday nights at Uncle Roberts! Mahalo, we will be back!
We had a great time. Communication with Andre and Susan was quick, property was clean and cozy. The location was perfect!
We had a great experience.
This place was peaceful and so relaxing. It does have 2 other homes on the property, but it felt very private. Definitely worth a stay! Loved the patio! One of favorite stays ever!
We did two nights just across the street from the amazing Kehena black sand beach. Cottage is comfortable for two, and we appreciated the AC in the bedroom. Will definitely be coming back again and again. Other folks mentioned the naturist aspect of the beach, and although true, that didn’t bother us in the least. Truly one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. The climb down is a bit daunting the first time, but no big deal once we got the hang of it.
Really liked staying here. Beautiful location and a very well furnished, cozy lil place.
The Whale House was simple and perfect. Exactly what we needed, quiet, clean and the host was extremely easy to work with. We will stay here again. You can hear the ocean, the view is beautiful and the kitchen was great for cooking meals. So many state parks down the road on both sides. Love it!
Loved the location. The house was really nice and clean.
This is a nice place to stay right by the ocean. Peaceful and comfortable bed.
Beautiful spot. Hosts communicated important details like where to get groceries and several activities in the area. The house was very clean. We could have used some washcloths, but otherwise can’t think of anything I’d change or add.
The Whale House was a quaint little beach house with AC, important because of the humidity. The views of the ocean, and vlack sand beach within walking distance were the best parts of our stay. The place could have been a little cleaner, ie the food crumbs in the pull out drawer under oven was, no baking sheet/pan to speak of, and the pans were not scrubbed out well. Also, the shower curtain in the bathroom was mildewed, and needed replacing or sprayed down in mildew cleaner. Otherwise a nice stay and location.
